The effect of polar lipids on tear film dynamics
In this paper we present a mathematical model describing the effect of polar lipids on the evolution of a precorneal tear film, with the aim of explaining the interesting experimentally observed phenomenon that the tear film continues to move upwards even after the upper eyelid has become stationary. The polar lipid is an insoluble surface species that locally alters the surface tension of the tear film. In the lubrication limit, the model reduces to two coupled nonlinear partial differential equations for the film thickness and the concentration of lipid. We solve the system numerically and observe that the presence of the lipid causes an increase in flow of liquid up the eye. We further exploit the size of the parameters in the problem to explain the initial evolution of the system
Formalizing Mathematical Knowledge as a Biform Theory Graph: A Case Study
A biform theory is a combination of an axiomatic theory and an algorithmic
theory that supports the integration of reasoning and computation. These are
ideal for formalizing algorithms that manipulate mathematical expressions. A
theory graph is a network of theories connected by meaning-preserving theory
morphisms that map the formulas of one theory to the formulas of another
theory. Theory graphs are in turn well suited for formalizing mathematical
knowledge at the most convenient level of abstraction using the most convenient
vocabulary. We are interested in the problem of whether a body of mathematical
knowledge can be effectively formalized as a theory graph of biform theories.
As a test case, we look at the graph of theories encoding natural number
arithmetic. We used two different formalisms to do this, which we describe and
compare. The first is realized in , a version of Church's
type theory with quotation and evaluation, and the second is realized in Agda,

First-principles calculations and experimental studies of: XYZ 2 thermoelectric compounds: Detailed analysis of van der Waals interactions
First-principles calculations can accelerate the search for novel high-performance thermoelectric materials. However, the prediction of the thermoelectric properties is strongly dependent on the approximations used for the calculations. Here, thermoelectric properties were calculated with different computational approximations (i.e., PBE-GGA, HSE06, spin-orbit coupling and DFT-D3) for three layered XYZ2 compounds (TmAgTe2, YAgTe2, and YCuTe2). In addition to the computations, the structural, electrical and thermal properties of these compounds were measured experimentally and compared to the computations. An enhanced prediction of the crystal structure and heat capacity was achieved with the inclusion of van der Waals interactions due to more accurate modeling of the interatomic forces. In particular, a large shift of the acoustic phonons and low-frequency optical phonons to lower frequencies was observed from the dispersion-optimized structure. From the phonon dispersion curves of these compounds, the ultralow thermal conductivity in the investigated XYZ2 compounds could be described by a recent developed minimum thermal conductivity model. For the prediction of the electrical conductivity, a temperature-dependent relaxation time was used, and it was limited by acoustic phonons. While HSE06 has only a small influence on the electrical properties due to a computed band gap energy of >0.25 eV, the inclusion of both van der Waals interactions and spin-orbit coupling leads to a more accurate band structure, resulting in better prediction of electrical properties. Furthermore, the experimental thermoelectric properties of YAgTe2, TmAg0.95Zn0.05Te2 and TmAg0.95Mg0.05Te2 were measured, showing an increase in zT of TmAg0.95Zn0.05Te2 by more than 35% (zT = 0.47 ± 0.12) compared to TmAgTe2
Critical Behavior of a Three-State Potts Model on a Voronoi Lattice
We use the single-histogram technique to study the critical behavior of the
three-state Potts model on a (random) Voronoi-Delaunay lattice with size
ranging from 250 to 8000 sites. We consider the effect of an exponential decay
of the interactions with the distance,, with , and
observe that this system seems to have critical exponents and
which are different from the respective exponents of the three-state Potts
model on a regular square lattice. However, the ratio remains
essentially the same. We find numerical evidences (although not conclusive, due
to the small range of system size) that the specific heat on this random system

Collisionless electron heating in inductively coupled discharges
A kinetic theory of collisionless electron heating is developed for inductively coupled discharges with a finite height L. The novel effect associated with the finite-length system is the resonance between the bounce motion of the electrons and the wave frequency, leading to enhanced heating. Safety and clinical activity of atacicept in the long-term extension of the Phase IIb ADDRESS II study in systemic lupus erythematosus
Objectives:
Atacicept reduced SLE disease activity in the Phase IIb ADDRESS II study, particularly in patients with high disease activity (HDA; SLEDAI-2K ≥10) at screening. We assessed long-term safety and efficacy of atacicept in the long-term extension (LTE) of ADDRESS II.
Methods:
In the 24-week, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled ADDRESS II study, patients received weekly atacicept (75 or 150 mg) or placebo. Atacicept was continued at the same dose in atacicept-treated patients in the LTE; placebo-treated patients switched to atacicept 150 mg. Long-term safety was the primary end point. Secondary endpoints included SLE responder index (SRI)-4 and SRI-6 response rates and flares.
Results:
253 patients entered the ADDRESS II LTE; 88 received atacicept 150 mg, 82 atacicept 75 mg and 83 placebo/atacicept 150 mg. Median active treatment duration in the LTE was 83.8 weeks. Frequencies of treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs) were similar across groups (90.4–93.2%). 12.5%, 14.6% and 21.7% of patients in the atacicept 150 mg, atacicept 75 mg and placebo/atacicept 150 mg groups reported serious TEAEs during the treatment period. The proportions of patients with TEAEs leading to discontinuation were 5.7%, 4.9% and 10.8%, respectively. SRI-4 and SRI-6 response rates were maintained with atacicept in the modified intent-to-treat and HDA populations and those on continuous 150 mg had a reduced risk of first severe flare and longer time to first severe flare vs those who initially received placebo.
Conclusion:
Long-term treatment with atacicept 150 mg in SLE patients had an acceptable safety profile, with durable efficacy
Mechanized Metatheory for the Masses: The \u3cb\u3ePOPLMARK\u3c/b\u3e Challenge
How close are we to a world where every paper on programming languages is accompanied by an electronic appendix with machinechecked proofs?
We propose an initial set of benchmarks for measuring progress in this area. Based on the metatheory of System F, a typed lambda-calculus with second-order polymorphism, subtyping, and records, these benchmarks embody many aspects of programming languages that are challenging to formalize: variable binding at both the term and type levels, syntactic forms with variable numbers of components (including binders), and proofs demanding complex induction principles. We hope that these benchmarks will help clarify the current state of the art, provide a basis for comparing competing technologies, and motivate further research
Partial rupture of the quadriceps muscle in a child
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The quadriceps femoris muscle ruptures usually occur in the middle-aged population. We present a 4-year-old patient with partial rupture of the quadriceps femoris muscle. To our knowledge, this is the youngest patient reported with a quadriceps femoris muscle rupture.</p> <p>Case Presentation</p> <p>A 4-year-old girl admitted to our clinic with left knee pain and limitation in knee movements. Her father reported that she felt pain while jumping on sofa. There was no direct trauma to thigh or knee. We located a palpable soft tissue swelling at distal anterolateral side of thigh. The history revealed that 10 days ago the patient was treated for upper tract respiratory infection with intramuscular Clindamycin for 7 days. When we consulted the patient with her previous doctor and nurse, we learnt that multiple daily injections might be injected to same side of left thigh. MRI showed a partial tear of vastus lateralis muscle matching with the injection sites. The patient treated with long leg half-casting for three weeks. Clinical examination and knee flexion had good results with conservative treatment.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Multiple intramuscular injections may contribute to damage muscles and make prone to tears with muscle contractions. Doctors and nurses must be cautious to inject from different parts of both thighs.</p
Reported and recorded sleepiness in obesity and depression
Civil war, flight, escape and expulsion are extremely stressful and assert a negative impact on refugees’ mental health. However scientific research about resilience and coping of refugees is scarce. Especially in the recent refugee crisis, calls have been made to consider factors contributing to coping and resilience in this vulnerable population. Therefore, the current research sought to investigate individual differences that could serve as antecedents of coping and contextual factors that might moderate these effects. Specifically, it took into account individual’s self-regulatory differences in terms of regulatory focus (i.e., a promotion focus on nurturance needs, ideals and gains vs. a prevention focus on security needs, oughts and losses). It furthermore explored contextual influences by considering Syrian refugees in Turkey (Sample 1, N = 273) and Germany (Sample 2, N = 169). Compared to Syrian refugees in Turkey, those in Germany had a stronger promotion focus. They also reported more problem-focused and less maladaptive coping, as well as less symptoms. Both promotion and prevention focus were positively related to problem-focused coping. Problem-focused coping, in turn, predicted more symptoms in Turkey but not in Germany. Furthermore, a stronger promotion focus was associated with less symptoms and maladaptive coping was associated with more symptoms in both samples. These results contribute to the coping literature in demonstrating that under certain conditions problem-focused coping can be maladaptive and extend the scarce previous work on self-regulation and coping. Most importantly, they highlight a promotion focus as a clear resilience factor and the role of maladaptive coping in increasing vulnerability. As such, they might inform the design of effective interventions among Syrian refugees and beyond
Meanings of epilepsy in its sociocultural context and implications for stigma: Findings from ethnographic studies in local communities in China and Vietnam
We investigated beliefs about the causes, course, and treatment of epilepsy and its impact on quality of life (QOL) in key target groups, using “mini-ethnographies” involving 141 in-depth interviews and 12 focus groups in China, and 84 in-depth interviews and 16 focus groups in Vietnam. Data were analyzed thematically, using a qualitative data analysis package. In both countries, beliefs about causes and triggers of epilepsy and seizures were a complex interweaving of Western, traditional, and folk medicine concepts. Epilepsy was understood to be chronic, not curable, but controllable, and was seen as enormously socially disruptive, with wide-ranging impact on QOL. Our findings suggest a more “embodied” and benign set of theories about epilepsy than in some other cultural contexts; nonetheless, people with epilepsy are still seen as having low social value and face social rejection. By exploring meanings attached to epilepsy in these two cultural contexts, we have clarified reasons behind previously documented negative attitudes and foci for future intervention studies
