    Formar um bom professor não é uma tarefasimples, pois existem conceitos e até metodologias que nem sempre conseguimos trabalhar em sala de aula ou nos estágios supervisionados. São conceitos que estão mais voltados para a formação humana do que para a formaçãoacadêmica. Mesmo após o estágio supervisionado, muitas vezes o novo professor não é capaz de ser um gestor social, seja em uma situação de conflito ou em uma situação no processo ensino-aprendizagem. Além disso, os professores no ensino médio nem sempre dispõe de tempo necessário com os alunos para conseguir um melhor aproveitamento acadêmico da turma. Neste trabalho, iremos mostrar como a aproximação entrelicenciandos em física e alunos do ensino médio pode render bons frutos para ambos, num processo que aqui denominamosde «cross-fertilisation»

    Master Operators Govern Multifractality in Percolation

    Using renormalization group methods we study multifractality in percolation at the instance of noisy random resistor networks. We introduce the concept of master operators. The multifractal moments of the current distribution (which are proportional to the noise cumulants CR(l)(x,x)C_R^{(l)} (x, x^\prime) of the resistance between two sites x and xx^\prime located on the same cluster) are related to such master operators. The scaling behavior of the multifractal moments is governed exclusively by the master operators, even though a myriad of servant operators is involved in the renormalization procedure. We calculate the family of multifractal exponents ψl{\psi_l} for the scaling behavior of the noise cumulants, CR(l)(x,x)xxψl/νC_R^{(l)} (x, x^\prime) \sim | x - x^\prime |^{\psi_l /\nu}, where ν\nu is the correlation length exponent for percolation, to two-loop order.Comment: 6 page

    Human cachexia induces changes in mitochondria, autophagy and apoptosis in the skeletal muscle

    Cachexia is a wasting syndrome characterized by the continuous loss of skeletal muscle mass due to imbalance between protein synthesis and degradation, which is related with poor prognosis and compromised quality of life. Dysfunctional mitochondria are associated with lower muscle strength and muscle atrophy in cancer patients, yet poorly described in human cachexia. We herein investigated mitochondrial morphology, autophagy and apoptosis in the skeletal muscle of patients with gastrointestinal cancer-associated cachexia (CC), as compared with a weight-stable cancer group (WSC). CC showed prominent weight loss and increased circulating levels of serum C-reactive protein, lower body mass index and decreased circulating hemoglobin, when compared to WSC. Electron microscopy analysis revealed an increase in intermyofibrillar mitochondrial area in CC, as compared to WSC. Relative gene expression of Fission 1, a protein related to mitochondrial fission, was increased in CC, as compared to WSC. LC3 II, autophagy-related (ATG) 5 and 7 essential proteins for autophagosome formation, presented higher content in the cachectic group. Protein levels of phosphorylated p53 (Ser46), activated caspase 8 (Asp384) and 9 (Asp315) were also increased in the skeletal muscle of CC. Overall, our results demonstrate that human cancer-associated cachexia leads to exacerbated muscle-stress response that may culminate in muscle loss, which is in part due to disruption of mitochondrial morphology, dysfunctional autophagy and increased apoptosis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report showing quantitative morphological alterations in skeletal muscle mitochondria in cachectic patients

    Based on the field theoretic formulation of the general epidemic process we study logarithmic corrections to scaling in dynamic isotropic percolation at the upper critical dimension d=6. Employing renormalization group methods we determine these corrections for some of the most interesting time dependent observables in dynamic percolation at the critical point up to and including the next to leading correction. For clusters emanating from a local seed at the origin we calculate the number of active sites, the survival probability as well as the radius of gyration.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, version to appear in Phys.     Tolerance Mechanisms in Mercury-exposed Chromolaena Odorata (L.f.) R.M. King Et H. Robinson, a Potential Phytoremediator

    Chromolaena odorata (L.f.) R.M. King et H. Robinson plants were grown in Hoagland\u27s solutions with 0.00 ppm and 1.00 ppm Hg(NO3)2. The calcium, magnesium, iron, and sulfur levels in the leaves were found to be not significantly affected by presence of the uptaken Hg2+. The chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and total chlorophyll contents of its leaves also remained within normal levels, which may indicate that the photosynthetic machinery of the Hg-exposed C. odorata was unaffected by the presence of Hg2+. The results of the ICP-AES analyses of the Hg2+ contents established the presence of Hg2+ in all the subcellular components obtained from the leaves of the Hg-treated C. odorata plants, and that the ultimate localization of Hg2+ is in the vacuoles. The findings revealed no significant differences in the degree of oxidative injury between the cells from the control and Hg-treated plants, as evidenced by the low lipid peroxidation levels obtained with the TBARS assay. The SH-containing biomolecules that were initially detected through DTNB assay manifested a predominant peak in the RP-HPLC chromatographs of both the control and Hg-treated plants, with their retention times falling within the ranges of GSH, MT, and cysteine standards. However, the concentrations of the GSH- and/or MT-like, Cys-containing biomolecules detected in the leaves of Hg-treated C. odorata plants were ten times higher than those of the control.The findings of this study suggest that the enhanced antioxidative capacity, the production of Hg-binding biomolecules, and the localization of Hg2+ ions ultimately in the vacuoles of the leaves are the mechanisms which bring about Hg2+ tolerance and homeostasis in C. odorata plant. These results indicate that C. odorata is a potentially effective phytoremediator for Hg2+

    Foram comparados três extratos quimicos de fósforo dispon¡vel em um Latossolo Vermelho-Escuro submetido a quatro tratamentos de adubação fosfatada (0, 150 e 450 mg de P/dm3 de solo). Os extratores qu¡micos testados foram: Mehlich 1, Mehlich 3 e resina trocadora de ânions. Entre esses, sobressaiu-se a resina, com maiores coeficientes de correlação entre a matéria seca da parte aérea de plantas de milho e o fósforo acumulado no tecido vegetal e com o fósforo extra¡do do solo. A resina também recuperou maior quantidade de fósforo do solo, além de ter apresentado correlação significativa com os outros extratores.bitstream/item/35785/1/Bol18.pd

    FasL Expression in Articular Discs of Human Temporomandibular Joint and Association with Osteoarthrosis

    Background Apoptosis is a programme of cell death which does not induce an inflammatory response. Recent previous research has suggested a correlation between temporomandibular internal derangement and apoptosis. Fas ligand (FasL) is an apoptosis‐inducing factor, known to trigger apoptosis through distinct signal pathways. This study aims to examine, by immunohistochemistry, the expression of FasL in temporomandibular joint (TMJ) articular discs of patients with anterior disc displacement with reduction (ADDwR) and without reduction (ADDwoR) in patients with and without osteoarthrosis (OA). Methods Forty‐two (n = 42) TMJ articular discs were divided into two cut‐offs: (i) 8 control, 17 ADDwR, 17 ADDwoR, and (ii) without OA (n = 25) and with OA (n = 17). The area of immunostaining was compared statistically between groups (P \u3c 0.05). Results Statistically significant differences were found in the expression of FasL in TMJ discs between the three groups (P = 0.001). ADDwR presented significant higher FasL expression when compared with ADDwoR (P \u3c 0.001). Significant higher FasL expression was observed in the group without OA (P = 0.001). All patients without OA presented ADDwR, while all the patients with OA presented ADDwoR. Conclusion A higher area of in situ immunostaining of FasL was found in temporomandibular discs with reduction, which is the less severe condition. Moreover, a reduced expression of FasL in the discs of patients with osteoarthrosis was found, suggesting that some aspects of apoptosis might underlie the progression of TMJ disorders

    Logarithmic Corrections for Spin Glasses, Percolation and Lee-Yang Singularities in Six Dimensions

    We study analytically the logarithmic corrections to the critical exponents of the critical behavior of correlation length, susceptibility and specific heat for the temperature and the finite-size scaling behavior, for a generic ϕ3\phi^3 theory at its upper critical dimension (six). We have also computed the leading correction to scaling as a function of the lattice size. We distinguish the obtained formulas to the following special cases: percolation, Lee-Yang (LY) singularities and mm-component spin glasses. We have compared our results for the Ising spin glass case with numerical simulations finding a very good agreement. Finally, and using the results obtained for the Lee-Yang singularities in six dimensions, we have computed the logarithmic corrections to the singular part of the free energy for lattice animals in eight dimensions.Comment: 18 pages.     On the relevance of percolation theory to the vulcanization transition

    The relationship between vulcanization and percolation is explored from the perspective of renormalized local field theory. We show rigorously that the vulcanization and percolation correlation functions are governed by the same Gell--Mann-Low renormalization group equation. Hence, all scaling aspects of the vulcanization transition are reigned by the critical exponents of the percolation universality class.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figure
