    Numerical simulation of a 3-D gas-solid fluidized bed: Comparison of TFM and CPFD numerical approaches and experimental validation

    This paper presents the results of a 3-D numerical simulation of a freely bubbling fluidized bed, based on the Eulerian¿Lagrangian approach, using the software Barracuda (CPFD-Barracuda). The main results obtained were assessed in terms of frequency analysis, bubble pierced length, bubble size, bubble passage frequency and bubble velocity. The results obtained were also compared with experimental data obtained in a 3-D fluidized bed using pressure and optical probes, and with the numerical results using the more common Eulerian-Eulerian approach, implemented in the commercial software Fluent (TFM-Fluent). The results show that CPFD-Barracuda satisfactorily predicts the global behaviour of bubbling beds with a low computational cost, although it computes smaller bubble sizes and lower bubble velocities than TFM-Fluent and experiments. Additionally, the spectra of pressure and particle volume fraction obtained with CPFD-Barracuda resemble those from the experiments and the TFM-Fluent simulations, but with a larger contribution of lower frequencies. The peaks of the pressure spectra from CPFD-Barracuda are close to those from the experiments and the TFM-Fluent simulations, whereas those in the solid volume spectra seem to be underestimated by CPFD-Barracuda.     Flow and heat transfer analysis of a gas-particle fluidized dense suspension in a tube for CSP applications

    This work presents a numerical study of the flow of particles in a gas–particle fluidized dense suspension for CSP applications using the Multi-Phase Particle in Cell (MP-PIC) method, implemented in CPFD-Barracuda software. The study covers two different numerical simulations. The first is a cold and isothermal model in which the fluctuations and control of the mass flow of particles ascending along the vertical tube was studied. In the second, a high-temperature boundary condition was imposed on the external surface of the tube and the energy equation was solved. In this second case, the heat transfer coefficient between the inner surface of the tube and the particles was numerically computed. The numerical results in the cold model are highly consistent with experimental data available in the literature (with values up to 150 kg/h and differences of approximately ±10 kg/h) and underline the significant impact of the pressure at the bottom of the bed and of the aeration flow rate on the mass flow of particles. The results of the non-isothermal case present heat transfer coefficients in the range of 300–400 W∕(m2 K) with transient fluctuations during the fluidization process.     Normal reference values of strength in pelvic floor muscle of women: a descriptive and inferential study

    Background: To describe the clinical, functional and quality of life characteristics in women with Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI). In addition, to analyse the relationship between the variables reported by the patients and those informed by the clinicians, and the relationship between instrumented variables and the manual pelvic floor strength assessment.Methods: Two hundred and eighteen women participated in this observational, analytical study. An interview about Urinary Incontinence and the quality of life questionnaires (EuroQoL-5D and SF-12) were developed as outcomes reported by the patients. Manual muscle testing and perineometry as outcomes informed by the clinician were assessed. Descriptive and correlation analysis were carried out.Results: The average age of the subjects was (39.93 ± 12.27 years), (24.49 ± 3.54 BMI). The strength evaluated by manual testing of the right levator ani muscles was 7.79 ± 2.88, the strength of left levator ani muscles was 7.51 ± 2.91 and the strength assessed with the perineometer was 7.64 ± 2.55. A positive correlation was found between manual muscle testing and perineometry of the pelvic floor muscles (p < .001). No correlation was found between outcomes of quality of life reported by the patients and outcomes of functional capacity informed by the physiotherapist.Conclusion: A stratification of the strength of pelvic floor muscles in a normal distribution of a large sample of women with SUI was done, which provided the clinic with a baseline. There is a relationship between the strength of the pelvic muscles assessed manually and that obtained by a perineometer in women with SUI. There was no relationship between these values of strength and quality of life perceived

    Influence of immersed surface shape on the heat transfer process and flow pattern in a fluidized bed using numerical simulation

    This paper presents a 2-D numerical simulation of a freely bubbling fluidized bed with immersed surfaces, using the Computational Particle Fluid Dynamics (CPFD) model implemented in the Barracuda commercial software. The heat transfer coefficients obtained are compared with an experimental study available in the open literature and numerical simulations based on the two-fluid model approach performed by other authors. Two different immersed surfaces, representing spherical and cylindrical geometries were studied. The simulations results show different heat transfer mechanisms, depending on the angular position in the two immersed surface geometries studied. The time average heat transfer coefficient around the whole heat transfer surface were 25% and 38% lower than the experimental study, for the cylindrical and spherical surfaces, respectively. These differences are lower than the results obtained with the two-fluid model approach reported in the open literature. The numerical results indicate that CPFD-Barracuda is able to properly simulate the heat transfer and the dynamics of the bed in defluidized regions, such as on the top of an immersed surface, where the two-fluid model fails and overpredicts the heat transfer rate.The work was partially funded by the Spanish government (project ENE2016-78908-R), the regional government of Castilla-La Mancha (project SBPLY/17/180501/000412) and the Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades-Agencia Estatal de Investigación (AEI) (RED2018-102431-T).     Aim: to investigate the effect of the selective cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitor rofecoxib on the incidence of perianastomotic colonic tumors in a model of chemical carcinogenesis in the rat. Experimental design: experimental study with 45 male Sprague-Dawley rats randomly assigned to one of three groups: control (n = 15) with colocolic anastomosis and chemical carcinogenesis with 1-2 dimethylhydrazine (1-2 DMH); rofecoxib 0.0027% (n = 15) with colonic anastomosis, chemical carcinogenesis and the addition of dietary rofecoxib at doses of 27 parts per million (ppm), and rofecoxib 0.0058% (n = 15) with colonic anastomosis, chemical carcinogenesis and the addition of dietary rofecoxib at doses of 58 ppm. Carcinogenic induction was performed with 1-2 DMH at a weekly dose of 25 mg/kg of weight for 18 weeks, and colonic tumors induced were analyzed in postoperative week 20. The main parameter evaluated was the percentage of colonic neoplastic tissue, which relates tumor surface area to the colon's surface area. Results: rofecoxib at doses of 2.5 mg/kg or 0.0058 ppm significantly reduced chemical colon carcinogenesis in rats, both in the perianastomotic area and the rest of the colon (p Objetivo: investigar el efecto de un inhibidor selectivo de la ciclooxigenasa-2, rofecoxib, en la incidencia de tumores cólicos perianastomóticos en un modelo de carcinogénesis farmacológica en ratas. El principal parámetro evaluado fue el porcentaje de tejido cólico neoplásico, que relaciona la superficie tumoral con la superficie del colon. Resultados: el rofecoxib a dosis de 0,0058 ppm redujo significativamente la carcinogénesis cólica inducida en ratas, tanto a nivel perianastomótico como en el resto del colon (p < 0,01). A nivel extraanastomótico, el rofecoxib a dosis de 2,5 mg/kg fue significativamente superior en su efecto inhibidor al rofecoxib a dosis de 1,2 mg/kg o 0,0027 ppm (p < 0,005). Conclusiones: el rofecoxib produce una disminución en la carcinogénesis cólica farmacológicamente inducida en ratas. Este efecto se mantiene en el área perianastomótica, por lo que puede ser interesante investigar su implicación en el cáncer colorrectal intervenido con riesgo de recidiva locorregional
