Semi-Classical Mechanics in Phase Space: The Quantum Target of Minimal Strings
The target space of minimal strings is embedded into the
phase space of an associated integrable classical mechanical model. This map is
derived from the matrix model representation of minimal strings. Quantum
effects on the target space are obtained from the semiclassical mechanics in
phase space as described by the Wigner function. In the classical limit the
target space is a fold catastrophe of the Wigner function that is smoothed out
by quantum effects. Double scaling limit is obtained by resolving the
singularity of the Wigner function. The quantization rules for backgrounds with
ZZ branes are also derived.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figure
The Ising model and planar N=4 Yang-Mills
The scattering-matrix for planar Yang-Mills with N=4 supersymmetry relies on
the assumption that integrability holds to all orders in perturbation theory.
In this note we define a map from the spectral variables x^{\pm},
parameterizing the long-range magnon momenta, to couplings in a two-dimensional
Ising model. Under this map integrability of planar N=4 Yang-Mills becomes
equivalent to the Yang-Baxter equation for the two-dimensional Ising model, and
the long-range variables x^{\pm} translate into the entries of the Ising
transfer matrices. We explore the Ising correlation length which equals the
inverse magnon momentum in the small momentum limit. The critical regime is
thus reached for vanishing magnon momentum. We also discuss the meaning of the
Kramers-Wannier duality transformation on the gauge theory, together with that
of the Ising model critical points.Comment: 24 pages. v2: References added and minor typos correcte
Factors Affecting Embryo Recovery Rate, Quality, and Diameter in Andalusian Donkey Jennies
Embryo transfer and the vitrification of embryos could be used for the conservation and recovery of endangered donkey breeds. It is important to develop techniques that optimize recovery rates and the cryotolerance of donkey embryos. This study evaluates factors affecting the recovery rate, quality, and diameter of embryos obtained from donor jennies as a starting point for the use of vitrification and embryo transfer in the conservation of the Andalusian donkey. A total of 100 embryos were recovered out of 124 estrous cycles (80.6%). The donor jenny affected the rates of positive flushings (PFR; p = 0.040) and embryo recovery (ERR; p < 0.05) as well as embryo quality (p = 0.004). ERR was also affected by the number of flushings (p < 0.001), donor age (p < 0.05), successive cycle within donor (p < 0.001), and jacks (p < 0.05). Number of flushings (p < 0.001) and jack (p < 0.05) had a significant effect on PFR, whereas the day of flushing influenced the developmental stage (p < 0.001), embryo quality (p < 0.05), and diameter of embryos (p < 0.001). The number of flushings significantly influenced the diameter (p = 0.038) and embryo developmental stage (p = 0.001), whereas the developmental stage was statistically different between herds (p = 0.020). The factors influencing the success of this assisted reproductive technique were donor jenny, donor age, successive cycle within donor, day of flushing, number of flushings, and jack. The identification of these key points is crucial to achieve a higher efficiency of embryo transfer and vitrification processes, before considering their application in the conservation of endangered donkey breeds
Influence of material structure on air-borne ultrasonic application in drying
[EN] This work aims to contribute to the understanding of how the properties of the material being dried affect
air-borne ultrasonic application. To this end, the experimental drying kinetics (40 C and 1 m/s) of cassava
(Manihot esculenta) and apple (Malus domestica var. Granny Smith) were carried out applying different
ultrasonic powers (0, 6, 12, 19, 25 and 31 kW/m3). Furthermore, the power ultrasound-assisted
drying kinetics of different fruits and vegetables (potato, eggplant, carrot, orange and lemon peel) already
reported in previous studies were also analyzed. The structural, textural and acoustic properties of all
these products were assessed, and the drying kinetics modeled by means of the diffusion theory.
A significant linear correlation (r > 0.95) was established between the identified effective diffusivity
(DW) and the applied ultrasonic power for the different products. The slope of this relationship (SDUP)
was used as an index of the effectiveness of the ultrasonic application; thus the higher the SDUP, the
more effective the ultrasound application. SDUP was well correlated (rP0.95) with the porosity and
hardness. In addition, SDUP was largely affected by the acoustic impedance of the material being dried,
showing a similar pattern with the impedance than the transmission coefficient of the acoustic energy on
the interface. Thus, soft and open-porous product structures exhibited a better transmission of acoustic
energy and were more prone to the mechanical effects of ultrasound. However, materials with a hard and
closed-compact structure were less affected by acoustic energy due to the fact that the significant impedance
differences between the product and the air cause high energy losses on the interfaceThe authors acknowledge the financial support of the Spanish Ministerio de Economia y Competitividad (Ref. UBVRI Light Curves of 44 Type Ia Supernovae
We present UBVRI photometry of 44 type-Ia supernovae (SN Ia) observed from
1997 to 2001 as part of a continuing monitoring campaign at the Fred Lawrence
Whipple Observatory of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. The
data set comprises 2190 observations and is the largest homogeneously observed
and reduced sample of SN Ia to date, nearly doubling the number of
well-observed, nearby SN Ia with published multicolor CCD light curves. The
large sample of U-band photometry is a unique addition, with important
connections to SN Ia observed at high redshift. The decline rate of SN Ia
U-band light curves correlates well with the decline rate in other bands, as
does the U-B color at maximum light. However, the U-band peak magnitudes show
an increased dispersion relative to other bands even after accounting for
extinction and decline rate, amounting to an additional ~40% intrinsic scatter
compared to B-band.Comment: 84 authors, 71 pages, 51 tables, 10 figures. Accepted for publication

These polymers have pores in its structure both in the dry and swollen state. Although it is well known that the structures and properties greatly differ between these two states, only few methods provide information about the swollen one, even though most of the applications involve the matrices in this situation. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) is a suitable tool for the study of the molecular dynamics of different liquids spatially confined in macro, meso and nanopores, through changes in the relaxation times. In transverse relaxation experiments, either diffusion inside the pore, or relaxation induced by mobility restriction of the liquid near the wall, are additional
sources of relaxation, which are extremely useful in the determination of structural and functional properties.Fil: Velasco, Manuel Isaac. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas.
