    TAU-PAIR PRODUCTION VIA PHOTON-PHOTON COLLISIONS AT LEP

    We point out that the cross-section for the process e+e−→e+e−τ+τ−e^+ e^- \to e^+ e^- \tau^+ \tau^- at LEP is large enough to allow for a study of the anomalous electromagnetic couplings of the τ\tau lepton. We show that the present bounds on the magnetic dipole moment can be improved and that competitive bounds can be obtained for the electric dipole moment using the data taken from 1992 to 1994.     Top Quark Physics at the Tevatron

    The discovery of the top quark in 1995, by the CDF and D0 collaborations at the Fermilab Tevatron, marked the dawn of a new era in particle physics. Since then, enormous efforts have been made to study the properties of this remarkable particle, especially its mass and production cross section. In this article, we review the status of top quark physics as studied by the two collaborations using the p-pbar collider data at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV. The combined measurement of the top quark mass, m_t = 173.8 +- 5.0 GeV/c^2, makes it known to a fractional precision better than any other quark mass. The production cross sections are measured as sigma (t-tbar) = 7.6 -1.5 +1.8 pb by CDF and sigma (t-tbar) = 5.5 +- 1.8 pb by D0.     Limits on Non-Standard Top Quark Couplings from Electroweak Measurements

    We calculate the typical size of loop corrections to electroweak observables arising from non-standard Zt‟tZ {\overline t } t and WtbW t b vertices. We use an effective Lagrangian formalism based on the electroweak gauge group SU(2)L×U(1)Y→U(1)EMSU(2)_L\times U(1)_Y \rightarrow U(1)_{EM}. Limits on the non-standard model top quark couplings from electroweak observables are presented and compared with previously obtained limits.Comment: 9 pages, uses epsf.st

    Single Top Quark Production as a Probe for Anomalous Moments at Hadron Colliders

    Single production of top quarks at hadron colliders via gWgW fusion is examined as a probe of possible anomalous chromomagnetic and/or chromoelectric moment type couplings between the top and gluons. We find that this channel is far less sensitive to the existence of anomalous couplings of this kind than is the usual production of top pairs by gggg or qqˉq\bar q fusion. This result is found to hold at both the Tevatron as well as the LHC although somewhat greater sensitivity for anomalous couplings in this channel is found at the higher energy machine.Comment: New discussion and 10 new figures added. uuencoded postscript fil

    Determination of alpha_s using Jet Rates at LEP with the OPAL detector

    Hadronic events produced in e+e- collisions by the LEP collider and recorded by the OPAL detector were used to form distributions based on the number of reconstructed jets. The data were collected between 1995 and 2000 and correspond to energies of 91 GeV, 130-136 GeV and 161-209 GeV. The jet rates were determined using four different jet-finding algorithms (Cone, JADE, Durham and Cambridge). The differential two-jet rate and the average jet rate with the Durham and Cambridge algorithms were used to measure alpha(s) in the LEP energy range by fitting an expression in which order alpah_2s calculations were matched to a NLLA prediction and fitted to the data. Combining the measurements at different centre-of-mass energies, the value of alpha_s (Mz) was determined to be alpha(s)(Mz)=0.1177+-0.0006(stat.)+-0.0012$(expt.)+-0.0010(had.)+-0.0032(theo.) \.Comment: 40 pages, 17 figures, Submitted to Euro.     Colour reconnection in e+e- -> W+W- at sqrt(s) = 189 - 209 GeV

    The effects of the final state interaction phenomenon known as colour reconnection are investigated at centre-of-mass energies in the range sqrt(s) ~ 189-209 GeV using the OPAL detector at LEP. Colour reconnection is expected to affect observables based on charged particles in hadronic decays of W+W-. Measurements of inclusive charged particle multiplicities, and of their angular distribution with respect to the four jet axes of the events, are used to test models of colour reconnection. The data are found to exclude extreme scenarios of the Sjostrand-Khoze Type I (SK-I) model and are compatible with other models, both with and without colour reconnection effects. In the context of the SK-I model, the best agreement with data is obtained for a reconnection probability of 37%. Assuming no colour reconnection, the charged particle multiplicity in hadronically decaying W bosons is measured to be (nqqch) = 19.38+-0.05(stat.)+-0.08 (syst.).Comment: 30 pages, 9 figures, Submitted to Euro.     Can We Observe Weak Anomalous Couplings of Heavy Quarks Through Three Jet Events?

    The rates and corresponding jet distributions for the decay Z→bbˉgZ\to b\bar bg and the process e+e−→ttˉge^+e^-\to t\bar tg may be sensitive to anomalous dipole-like couplings of heavy quarks to the photon and ZZ. In the bb-quark case, after updating our previous analysis on the constraints imposed by current experiments on ZbbˉZb\bar b anomalous couplings, we show that the variation of these couplings within their presently allowed ranges leads to rather minor modifications to the Standard Model expectations for Z→bbˉgZ\to b\bar bg observables. In the tt-quark case, significant deviations from the Standard Model predictions for ttˉgt\bar tg production at the Next Linear Collider are possible.Comment: 26 pages with 9 embedded figures; gzipped, uuencoded postscript file.     Scaling violations of quark and gluon jet fragmentation functions in e+e- annihilations at sqrt(s) = 91.2 and 183-209 GeV

    Flavour inclusive, udsc and b fragmentation functions in unbiased jets, and flavour inclusive, udsc, b and gluon fragmentation functions in biased jets are measured in e+e- annihilations from data collected at centre-of-mass energies of 91.2, and 183-209 GeV with the OPAL detector at LEP. The unbiased jets are defined by hemispheres of inclusive hadronic events, while the biased jet measurements are based on three-jet events selected with jet algorithms. Several methods are employed to extract the fragmentation functions over a wide range of scales. Possible biases are studied in the results are obtained. The fragmentation functions are compared to results from lower energy e+e- experiments and with earlier LEP measurements and are found to be consistent. Scaling violations are observed and are found to be stronger for the fragmentation functions of gluon jets than for those of quarks. The measured fragmentation functions are compared to three recent theoretical next-to-leading order calculations and to the predictions of three Monte Carlo event generators. While the Monte Carlo models are in good agreement with the data, the theoretical predictions fail to describe the full set of results, in particular the b and gluon jet measurements.Comment: 46 pages, 17 figures, Submitted to Eur.     Measurements of Flavour Dependent Fragmentation Functions in Z^0 -> qq(bar) Events

    Fragmentation functions for charged particles in Z -> qq(bar) events have been measured for bottom (b), charm (c) and light (uds) quarks as well as for all flavours together. The results are based on data recorded between 1990 and 1995 using the OPAL detector at LEP. Event samples with different flavour compositions were formed using reconstructed D* mesons and secondary vertices. The \xi_p = ln(1/x_E) distributions and the position of their maxima \xi_max are also presented separately for uds, c and b quark events.
