    First observations of separated atmospheric nu_mu and bar{nu-mu} events in the MINOS detector

    The complete 5.4 kton MINOS far detector has been taking data since the beginning of August 2003 at a depth of 2070 meters water-equivalent in the Soudan mine, Minnesota. This paper presents the first MINOS observations of nuµ and [overline nu ]µ charged-current atmospheric neutrino interactions based on an exposure of 418 days. The ratio of upward- to downward-going events in the data is compared to the Monte Carlo expectation in the absence of neutrino oscillations, giving Rup/downdata/Rup/downMC=0.62-0.14+0.19(stat.)±0.02(sys.). An extended maximum likelihood analysis of the observed L/E distributions excludes the null hypothesis of no neutrino oscillations at the 98% confidence level. Using the curvature of the observed muons in the 1.3 T MINOS magnetic field nuµ and [overline nu ]µ interactions are separated. The ratio of [overline nu ]µ to nuµ events in the data is compared to the Monte Carlo expectation assuming neutrinos and antineutrinos oscillate in the same manner, giving R[overline nu ][sub mu]/nu[sub mu]data/R[overline nu ][sub mu]/nu[sub mu]MC=0.96-0.27+0.38(stat.)±0.15(sys.), where the errors are the statistical and systematic uncertainties. Although the statistics are limited, this is the first direct observation of atmospheric neutrino interactions separately for nuµ and [overline nu ]µ

    Search for Gluinos and Scalar Quarks in ppˉp\bar{p} Collisions at s=1.8\sqrt{s}=1.8 TeV using the Missing Energy plus Multijets Signature

    We have performed a search for gluinos (\gls) and squarks (\sq) in a data sample of 84 pb1^{-1} of \ppb collisions at s\sqrt{s} = 1.8 TeV, recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab, by investigating the final state of large missing transverse energy and 3 or more jets, a characteristic signature in R-parity-conserving supersymmetric models. The analysis has been performed `blind', in that the inspection of the signal region is made only after the predictions from Standard Model backgrounds have been calculated. Comparing the data with predictions of constrained supersymmetric models, we exclude gluino masses below 195 \gev (95% C.L.), independent of the squark mass. For the case \msq \approx \mgls, gluino masses below 300 \gev are excluded.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure

    A secretome profile indicative of oleate-induced proliferation of HepG2 hepatocellular carcinoma cells

    Increased fatty acid (FA) is often observed in highly proliferative tumors. FAs have been shown to modulate the secretion of proteins from tumor cells, contributing to tumor survival. However, the secreted factors affected by FA have not been systematically explored. Here, we found that treatment of oleate, a monounsaturated omega-9 FA, promoted the proliferation of HepG2 cells. To examine the secreted factors associated with oleate-induced cell proliferation, we performed a comprehensive secretome profiling of oleate-treated and untreated HepG2 cells. A comparison of the secretomes identified 349 differentially secreted proteins (DSPs; 145 upregulated and 192 downregulated) in oleate-treated samples, compared to untreated samples. The functional enrichment and network analyses of the DSPs revealed that the 145 upregulated secreted proteins by oleate treatment were mainly associated with cell proliferation-related processes, such as lipid metabolism, inflammatory response, and ER stress. Based on the network models of the DSPs, we selected six DSPs (MIF, THBS1, PDIA3, APOA1, FASN, and EEF2) that can represent such processes related to cell proliferation.     Observation of Muon Neutrino Disappearance with the MINOS Detectors in the NuMI Neutrino Beam

    This Letter reports results from the MINOS experiment based on its initial exposure to neutrinos from the Fermilab NuMI beam. The rates and energy spectra of charged current νμ interactions are compared in two detectors located along the beam axis at distances of 1 and 735 km. With 1.27×1020 120 GeV protons incident on the NuMI target, 215 events with energies below 30 GeV are observed at the Far Detector, compared to an expectation of 336±14 events. The data are consistent with νμ disappearance via oscillations with |Δm322|=2.74-0.26+0.44×10-3  eV2 and sin⁡2(2θ23)>0.87 (68% C.L.)

    A synthesis of high purity single-walled carbon nanotubes from small diameters of cobalt nanoparticles by using oxygen-assisted chemical vapor deposition process

    A successful combination of "oxygen-assisted chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process" and Co catalyst nanoparticles to grow highly pure single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) was demonstrated. Recently, it was reported that addition of small amounts of oxygen during CVD process dramatically increased the purity and yield of carbon nanotubes. However, this strategy could not be applied for discrete Fe nanoparticle catalysts from which appropriate yields of SWNTs could be grown directly on solid substrates, and fabricated into field effect transistors (FETs) quite efficiently. The main reason for this failure is due to the carbothermal reduction which results in SiO(2) nanotrench formation. We found that the oxygen-assisted CVD process could be successfully applied for the growth of highly pure SWNTs by switching the catalyst from Fe to Co nanoparticles. The topological morphologies and p-type transistor electrical transport properties of the grown SWNTs were examined by using atomic force microscope (AFM), Raman, and from FET devices fabricated by photolithography.X119sciescopuskc

    Direct precursor conversion reaction for densely packed Ag2S nanocrystal thin films

    Successful realization of highly crystalline and densely packed Ag2S nanocrystal (NC) films has been achieved by directly converting precursor molecules, Ag(SCOPh), on preheated substrates. When an aliquot of Ag(SCOPh) solution dissolved in trioctylphosphine (TOP) is applied on preheated solid substrates at 160 degrees C, such as SiO2/Si, H-terminated Si, and quartz. Ag2S NC thin films have been formed with instant phase and color changes of the precursor solutions from pale yellow homogeneous solution to black solid films. The average diameter of individual Ag2S NCs forming thin films is ca. 25 nm, as confirmed by examining both isolated Ag2S NCs from thin films and as-made thin film samples by using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern shows that the synthesized Ag2S NCs have well-defined monoclinic acanthite phase. Direct precursor conversion process has resulted in densely packed Ag2S NCs with reduced interparticle distances owing to efficient removal of TOP during the reaction. Compared to the devices fabricated by the drop-coating process, Ag2S thin film devices fabricated by direct precursor conversion process have shown a ca. 300-fold increased conductance. A 32-year-old male presented with visual loss in the left eye. He was hit by an iron fragment while he was hammering. An intraocular foreign body was found with corneal laceration and traumatic cataract. On the day he was injured, primary closure of the laceration, lensectomy, and vitrectomy were performed, and the foreign body was removed. The day after the operation, there was no sign of retinal detachment or retinitis. Two days after the operation, retinal necrosis and accompanying vitreous inflammation were noted in the far periphery. On  day 3, the necrosis spread circumferentially and inflammation became more distinct. ARN was presumed and intravenous acyclovir was administered. The necrotic areas were reduced 2 days later, and were resolved in 1 month. The final visual acuity in his left eye was 20/20 after implantation of an intraocular lens. This case is the first report of ARN after penetrating injury and an intraocular foreign body.     Selective degradation of chemical bonds: from single-source molecular precursors to metallic Ag and semiconducting A(g2)S nanocrystals via instant thermal activation

    Selective formation of metallic Ag and semiconducting Ag2S nanocrystals has been achieved via a modified hot-injection process from a single-source precursor molecule, Ag(SCOPh), which can potentially generate both [Ag] and [AgS] fragments simultaneously. When the precursor molecules are injected into a preheated reaction system at 160 degrees C, spherical Ag2S nanocrystals are directly obtained even without a molecular activator, such as alkylamines. Mixtures of Ag and Ag2S or pure metallic Ag nanocrystals are obtained if the precursor molecules are injected at lower than 160 degrees C or room temperature. These results are attributed to the direct transfer of thermal energies to precursor molecules, which are enough to dissociate S-C as well as Ag-S bonds simultaneously.
