Prediction of Muscle Performance During Dynamic Repetitive Exercise
A method for predicting human muscle performance was developed. Eight test subjects performed a repetitive dynamic exercise to failure using a Lordex spinal machine. Electromyography (EMG) data was collected from the erector spinae. Evaluation of the EMG data using a 5th order Autoregressive (AR) model and statistical regression analysis revealed that an AR parameter, the mean average magnitude of AR poles, can predict performance to failure as early as the second repetition of the exercise. Potential applications to the space program include evaluating on-orbit countermeasure effectiveness, maximizing post-flight recovery, and future real-time monitoring capability during Extravehicular Activity
How to Conduct Store Observations of Tobacco Marketing and Products
As tobacco companies continue to heavily market their products at the point of sale, tobacco control groups seek strategies to combat the negative effects of this marketing. Store observations, which have been widely used by researchers and practitioners alike, are an excellent surveillance tool. This article provides a guide for public health practitioners interested in working in the tobacco retail environment by detailing the steps involved in conducting store observations of tobacco marketing and products including 1) obtaining tobacco product retailer lists, 2) creating measures, 3) selecting a mode of data collection, 4) training data collectors, and 5) analyzing data. We also highlight issues that may arise while in the field and provide information on disseminating results of store observations, including the potential policy implications
The role of inertia for the rotation of a nearly spherical particle in a general linear flow
We analyse the angular dynamics of a neutrally buoyant nearly spherical
particle immersed in a steady general linear flow. The hydrodynamic torque
acting on the particle is obtained by means of a reciprocal theorem, regular
perturbation theory exploiting the small eccentricity of the nearly spherical
particle, and assuming that inertial effects are small, but finite.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figur
Computational science and re-discovery: open-source implementations of ellipsoidal harmonics for problems in potential theory
We present two open-source (BSD) implementations of ellipsoidal harmonic
expansions for solving problems of potential theory using separation of
variables. Ellipsoidal harmonics are used surprisingly infrequently,
considering their substantial value for problems ranging in scale from
molecules to the entire solar system. In this article, we suggest two possible
reasons for the paucity relative to spherical harmonics. The first is
essentially historical---ellipsoidal harmonics developed during the late 19th
century and early 20th, when it was found that only the lowest-order harmonics
are expressible in closed form. Each higher-order term requires the solution of
an eigenvalue problem, and tedious manual computation seems to have discouraged
applications and theoretical studies. The second explanation is practical: even
with modern computers and accurate eigenvalue algorithms, expansions in
ellipsoidal harmonics are significantly more challenging to compute than those
in Cartesian or spherical coordinates. The present implementations reduce the
"barrier to entry" by providing an easy and free way for the community to begin
using ellipsoidal harmonics in actual research. We demonstrate our
implementation using the specific and physiologically crucial problem of how
charged proteins interact with their environment, and ask: what other
analytical tools await re-discovery in an era of inexpensive computation?Comment: 25 pages, 3 figure
System and Method for RFID-Enabled Information Collection
Methods, apparatuses and systems for radio frequency identification (RFID)-enabled information collection are disclosed, including an enclosure, a collector coupled to the enclosure, an interrogator, a processor, and one or more RFID field sensors, each having an individual identification, disposed within the enclosure. In operation, the interrogator transmits an incident signal to the collector, causing the collector to generate an electromagnetic field within the enclosure. The electromagnetic field is affected by one or more influences. RFID sensors respond to the electromagnetic field by transmitting reflected signals containing the individual identifications of the responding RFID sensors to the interrogator. The interrogator receives the reflected signals, measures one or more returned signal strength indications ("RSSI") of the reflected signals and sends the RSSI measurements and identification of the responding RFID sensors to the processor to determine one or more facts about the influences. Other embodiments are also described
Setting Priorities for Space Research: Opportunities and Imperatives
This report represents the first phase of a study by a task group convened by the Space Studies Board to ascertain whether it should attempt to develop a methodology for recommending priorities among the various initiatives in space research (that is, scientific activities concerned with phenomena in space or utilizing observations from space). The report argues that such priority statements by the space research community are both necessary and desirable and would contribute to the formulation and implementation of public policy. The report advocates the establishment of priorities to enhance effective management of the nation's scientific research program in space. It argues that scientific objectives and purposes should determine how and under what circumstances scientific research should be done. The report does not take a position on the controversy between advocates of manned space exploration and those who favor the exclusive use of unmanned space vehicles. Nor does the report address questions about the value or appropriateness of Space Station Freedom or proposals to establish a permanent manned Moon base or to undertake a manned mission to Mars. These issues lie beyond the charge to the task group

Reduced habituation of auditory evoked potentials indicate cortical hyper-excitability in Fragile X Syndrome
Sensory hypersensitivities are common, clinically distressing features of Fragile X Syndrome (FXS). Preclinical evidence suggests this abnormality may result from synaptic hyper-excitability in sensory systems. This model predicts reduced sensory habituation to repeated stimulus presentation. Fourteen adolescents and adults with FXS and 15 age-matched controls participated in a modified auditory gating task using trains of 4 identical tones during dense array electroencephalography (EEG). Event-related potential and single trial time–frequency analyses revealed decreased habituation of the N1 event-related potential response in FXS, and increased gamma power coupled with decreases in gamma phase-locking during the early-stimulus registration period. EEG abnormalities in FXS were associated with parent reports of heightened sensory sensitivities and social communication deficits. Reduced habituation and altered gamma power and phase-locking to auditory cues demonstrated here in FXS patients parallels preclinical findings with Fmr1 KO mice. Thus, the EEG abnormalities seen in FXS patients support the model of neocortical hyper-excitability in FXS, and may provide useful translational biomarkers for evaluating novel treatment strategies targeting its neural substrate
