    First Demonstration of Ultra-Thin SiGe-Channel Junctionless Accumulation-Mode (JAM) Bulk FinFETs on Si Substrate with PN Junction-Isolation Scheme

    A SiGe-channel junctionless-accumulation-mode (JAM) PMOS bulk FinFETs were successfully demonstrated on Si substrate with PN junction-isolation scheme for the first time. The JAM bulk FinFETs with fin width of 18 nm exhibits excellent subthreshold characteristics such as subthreshold swing of 64 mV/decade, drain-induced barrier lowering (DIBL) of 40 mV/V and high Ion/Ioff current ratio ( \u3e 1 x 105). The change of substrate bias from 0 to 5 V leads to the threshold voltage shift of 53 mV by modulating the effective channel thickness. When compared to the Si-channel bulk FinFETs with fin width of 18 nm, Si and SiGe channel devices exhibits comparable subthreshold swing and DIBL. For devices with longer fin width, SiGe channel devices exhibits much lower DIBL, indicating superior top-gate controllability and robustness to substrate bias compared to the Si channel devices. A zero temperature coefficient point was observed in the transfer curves as temperature increases from -120 to 120°C, confirming that mobility degradation is dominantly affected by phonon scattering mechanism

    The Role of Endothelin Receptor A during Myelination of Developing Oligodendrocytes

    Endothelin (ET)-1 and its receptors (ETA and ETB receptor) are present in the central nervous system. ET exerts biological effects on gliogenesis and glial cell functions. In order to define a possible mechanism of ETA receptor signaling, the distribution of the ETA receptor in developing oligodendrocytes and the effects of ET-1 on the myelination of oligodendrocytes were examined. ETA receptor immunoreactivity was confined to the perivascular elements of the blood vessels during early postnatal development. However later in development, ETA receptor immunoreactivity was no longer observed in the vessels but became localized to the myelinating oligodendrocytes of the primitive corpus callosum of the white matter, apart from the vessels. ET-1 induced myelin basic protein (MBP) in primary oligodendrocyte precursor cell culture though the ETA receptor and was blocked by an ETA receptor antagonist. In addition, ET-1 evoked the release of Ca2+ which is a central regulator of oligodendrocyte differentiation. Our results provide a link between ET-1 and its ETA receptor and myelination during oligodendrocyte differentiation

    Identifying novel genetic variants for brain amyloid deposition: a genome-wide association study in the Korean population

    Background: Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified a number of genetic variants for Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, most GWAS were conducted in individuals of European ancestry, and non-European populations are still underrepresented in genetic discovery efforts. Here, we performed GWAS to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with amyloid β (Aβ) positivity using a large sample of Korean population. Methods: One thousand four hundred seventy-four participants of Korean ancestry were recruited from multicenters in South Korea. Discovery dataset consisted of 1190 participants (383 with cognitively unimpaired [CU], 330 with amnestic mild cognitive impairment [aMCI], and 477 with AD dementia [ADD]) and replication dataset consisted of 284 participants (46 with CU, 167 with aMCI, and 71 with ADD). GWAS was conducted to identify SNPs associated with Aβ positivity (measured by amyloid positron emission tomography). Aβ prediction models were developed using the identified SNPs. Furthermore, bioinformatics analysis was conducted for the identified SNPs. Results: In addition to APOE, we identified nine SNPs on chromosome 7, which were associated with a decreased risk of Aβ positivity at a genome-wide suggestive level. Of these nine SNPs, four novel SNPs (rs73375428, rs2903923, rs3828947, and rs11983537) were associated with a decreased risk of Aβ positivity (p < 0.05) in the replication dataset. In a meta-analysis, two SNPs (rs7337542 and rs2903923) reached a genome-wide significant level (p < 5.0 × 10-8). Prediction performance for Aβ positivity increased when rs73375428 were incorporated (area under curve = 0.75; 95% CI = 0.74-0.76) in addition to clinical factors and APOE genotype. Cis-eQTL analysis demonstrated that the rs73375428 was associated with decreased expression levels of FGL2 in the brain. Conclusion: The novel genetic variants associated with FGL2 decreased risk of Aβ positivity in the Korean population. This finding may provide a candidate therapeutic target for AD, highlighting the importance of genetic studies in diverse populations

    Comparative analysis of the oral microbiome of burning mouth syndrome patients

    Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is a chronic pain condition accompanied by unpleasant burning sensations of the oral mucosa. While multiple factors were proposed for the etiology, evidence suggested a neuropathic pain origin while others suspected the use of antibiotics as the underlying cause. Interestingly, several reports demonstrated the intimate interaction of the nervous system and the microbiome. The current study aims to elucidate the correlation of the oral microbiome with the pathophysiology of the primary BMS. Microbiome samples obtained from the unstimulated whole saliva of 19 primary BMS patients and 22 healthy controls were sequenced and analyzed of the V3-V4 region of 16S rRNA gene. There was a distinct difference in the microbial composition between the BMS and the control groups at all taxonomic levels. Alpha diversity indexes of the oral microbiome were significantly lower in the BMS group. The samples were readily distinguished by multidimensional scaling analysis and linear discriminant analysis effect size. Streptococcus, Rothia, Bergeyella, and Granulicatella genus were dominant in the BMS group, while Prevotella, Haemophilus, Fusobacterium, Campylobacter, and Allorevotella genus were more abundant in the healthy group. Distinct microbiome signatures of BMS patients suggested a diagnostic value and a potential role in the pathogenesis of BMS.Y

    Ultrafast Na Transport into Crystalline Sn via Dislocation-Pipe Diffusion

    The charging process of secondary batteries is always associated with a large volume expansion of the alloying anodes, which in many cases, develops high compressive residual stresses near the propagating interface. This phenomenon causes a significant reduction in the rate performance of the anodes and is detrimental to the development of fast-charging batteries. However, for the Na-Sn battery system, the residual stresses that develop near the interface are not stored, but are relieved by the generation of high-density dislocations in crystalline Sn. Direct-contact diffusion experiments show that these dislocations facilitate the preferential transport of Na and accelerate the Na diffusion into crystalline Sn at ultrafast rates via "dislocation-pipe diffusion". Advanced analyses are performed to observe the evolution of atomic-scale structures while measuring the distribution and magnitude of residual stresses near the interface. In addition, multi-scale simulations that combined classical molecular dynamics and first-principles calculations are performed to explain the structural origins of the ultrafast diffusion rates observed in the Na-Sn system. These findings not only address the knowledge gaps regarding the relationship between pipe diffusion and the diffusivity of carrier ions but also provide guidelines for the appropriate selection of anode materials for use in fast-charging batteries.11Nsciescopu

    The influence of the COVID-19 pandemic, sex, and age on temporomandibular disorders subtypes in East Asian patients: a retrospective observational study

    Abstract Background Despite its major existential, societal, and health impacts, research concerning the COVID-19 pandemic and Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) is still limited. This study examined the effect of the pandemic on TMD subtypes and elucidated the influence of the pandemic, sex, and age on the prospect of pain-related (PT) and/or intra-articular (IT) TMDs in East Asian patients. Methods Data were accrued from consecutive new patients attending two university-based TMD/orofacial pain clinics in China and South Korea, 12 months before (BC; Mar 2019-Feb 2020) and during (DC; Mar 2020-Feb 2021) the COVID-19 pandemic. TMD diagnoses were derived from pertinent symptoms, signs, and radiographic findings according to the Diagnostic Criteria for TMDs (DC/TMD) methodology. Patients were subsequently categorized into those with PT, IT, and combined TMDs (CT) and also stratified by attendance period, sex, and age groups (adolescents/young adults [AY] and middle-aged/older adults [MO]) for statistical analyses using Chi-square/Mann-Whitney U tests and logistic regression analyses (α = 0.05). Results The BC and DC groups comprised 367 (75.2% females; 82.8% AY) and 471 (74.3% females; 78.3% AY) patients correspondingly. No significant differences in sex and age group distributions were observed. The DC group had significantly more PT/IT conditions with higher prevalence of myalgia, headache, and degenerative joint disease than the BC group. Univariate analyses showed that PT/CT was associated with sex and age, whereas IT was related to the pandemic and age. However, multivariate analyses indicated that the odds of PT were affected by sex (OR = 2.52) and age (OR = 1.04) while the odds of IT (OR = 0.95) and CT (OR = 1.02) were influenced by age only. Conclusions The COVID-19 pandemic, as an impact event, did not influence the prospect of PT and/or IT. Sex and age appeared to play more crucial roles in the development of PT and IT/CT respectively

    DC/TMD axis I subtyping: generational and gender variations among East Asian TMD patients

    Abstract Objectives This study examined the generational-gender distinctions in Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular disorders (DC/TMD) subtypes among East Asian patients. Methods Consecutive “first-visit” TMD patients presenting at two university-based TMD/orofacial pain clinics in China and South Korea were enlisted. Demographic information along with symptom history was gathered and clinical examinations were performed according to the DC/TMD methodology. Axis I physical diagnoses were rendered with the DC/TMD algorithms and categorized into painful and non-painful TMDs. Patients were categorized into three birth cohorts, specifically Gen X, Y, and Z (born 1965–1980, 1981–1999, and 2000–2012 respectively) and the two genders. Data were evaluated using Chi-square/Kruskal-Wallis plus post-hoc tests and logistic regression analyses (α = 0.05). Results Gen X, Y, and Z formed 17.2%, 62.1%, and 20.7% of the 1717 eligible patients examined (mean age 29.7 ± 10.6 years; 75.7% women). Significant differences in prevalences of arthralgia, myalgia, headache (Gen X ≥ Y > Z), and disc displacements (Gen Z > Y > X) were observed among the three generations. Gen Z had substantially fewer pain-related and more intra-articular conditions than the other generations. Women presented a significantly greater frequency of degenerative joint disease and number of intra-articular conditions than men. After controlling for generation-gender interactions, multivariate analyses showed that “being Gen X” and female increased the risk of painful TMDs (OR = 2.20) and reduced the odds of non-painful TMDs (OR = 0.46). Conclusions Generational-gender diversities in DC/TMD subtypes exist and are important for guiding TMD care and future research endeavors
