Levi-Civita cylinders with fractional angular deficit
The angular deficit factor in the Levi-Civita vacuum metric has been
parametrized using a Riemann-Liouville fractional integral. This introduces a
new parameter into the general relativistic cylinder description, the
fractional index {\alpha}. When the fractional index is continued into the
negative {\alpha} region, new behavior is found in the Gott-Hiscock cylinder
and in an Israel shell.Comment: 5 figure
The continous Legendre transform, its inverse transform, and applications
This paper is concerned with the continuous Legendre transform, derived from the classical discrete Legendre transform by replacing the Legendre polynomial Pk(x) by the function PÎť(x) with Îť real. Another approach to T.M. MacRobert's inversion formula is found; for this purpose an inverse Legendre transform, mapping L1(â+) into L2(â1,1), is defined. Its inversion in turn is naturally achieved by the continuous Legendre transform. One application is devoted to the Shannon sampling theorem in the Legendre frame together with a new type of error estimate. The other deals with a new representation of Legendre functions giving information about their behaviour near the point x=â1
The Zero-Removing Property and Lagrange-Type Interpolation Series
The classical Kramer sampling theorem, which provides a method for obtaining orthogonal sampling formulas, can be formulated in a more general nonorthogonal setting. In this setting, a challenging problem is to characterize the situations when the obtained nonorthogonal sampling formulas can be expressed as Lagrange-type interpolation series. In this article a necessary and sufficient condition is given in terms of the zero removing property. Roughly speaking, this property concerns the stability of the sampled functions on removing a finite number of their zeros
Quantum tomography, phase space observables, and generalized Markov kernels
We construct a generalized Markov kernel which transforms the observable
associated with the homodyne tomography into a covariant phase space observable
with a regular kernel state. Illustrative examples are given in the cases of a
'Schrodinger cat' kernel state and the Cahill-Glauber s-parametrized
distributions. Also we consider an example of a kernel state when the
generalized Markov kernel cannot be constructed.Comment: 20 pages, 3 figure
Multicritical continuous random trees
We introduce generalizations of Aldous' Brownian Continuous Random Tree as
scaling limits for multicritical models of discrete trees. These discrete
models involve trees with fine-tuned vertex-dependent weights ensuring a k-th
root singularity in their generating function. The scaling limit involves
continuous trees with branching points of order up to k+1. We derive explicit
integral representations for the average profile of this k-th order
multicritical continuous random tree, as well as for its history distributions
measuring multi-point correlations. The latter distributions involve
non-positive universal weights at the branching points together with fractional
derivative couplings. We prove universality by rederiving the same results
within a purely continuous axiomatic approach based on the resolution of a set
of consistency relations for the multi-point correlations. The average profile
is shown to obey a fractional differential equation whose solution involves
hypergeometric functions and matches the integral formula of the discrete

"Antiscepticism and Easy Justification" - Ch 5 of Seemings and Epistemic Justification
In this chapter I investigate epistemological consequences of the fact that seeming-based justification is elusive, in the sense that the subject can lose this justification simply by reflecting on her seemings. I argue that since seeming-based justification is elusive, the antisceptical bite of phenomenal conservatism is importantly limited. I also contend that since seeming-based justification has this feature, phenomenal conservatism isnât actually afflicted by easy justification problems
Central factorials under the Kontorovich-Lebedev transform of polynomials
We show that slight modifications of the Kontorovich-Lebedev transform lead
to an automorphism of the vector space of polynomials. This circumstance along
with the Mellin transformation property of the modified Bessel functions
perform the passage of monomials to central factorial polynomials. A special
attention is driven to the polynomial sequences whose KL-transform is the
canonical sequence, which will be fully characterized. Finally, new identities

A note on maximal estimates for stochastic convolutions
In stochastic partial differential equations it is important to have pathwise
regularity properties of stochastic convolutions. In this note we present a new
sufficient condition for the pathwise continuity of stochastic convolutions in

Landscape science: a Russian geographical tradition
The Russian geographical tradition of landscape science (landshaftovedenie) is analyzed with particular reference to its initiator, Lev Semenovich Berg (1876-1950). The differences between prevailing Russian and Western concepts of landscape in geography are discussed, and their common origins in German geographical thought in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries are delineated. It is argued that the principal differences are accounted for by a number of factors, of which Russia's own distinctive tradition in environmental science deriving from the work of V. V. Dokuchaev (1846-1903), the activities of certain key individuals (such as Berg and C. O. Sauer), and the very different social and political circumstances in different parts of the world appear to be the most significant. At the same time it is noted that neither in Russia nor in the West have geographers succeeded in specifying an agreed and unproblematic understanding of landscape, or more broadly in promoting a common geographical conception of human-environment relationships. In light of such uncertainties, the latter part of the article argues for closer international links between the variant landscape traditions in geography as an important contribution to the quest for sustainability
