    The use and effectiveness of the eLib subject gateways: a preliminary investigation

    Internet subject gateways were set up under the Electronic Libraries Programme (eLib) in order to address some of the problems of searching the Internet which have been identified by information professionals, i.e. locating relevant, good quality information. This preliminary study examines the extent to which academics in two universities use three eLib subject gateways (EEVL, OMNI and SOSIG). The results are generally encouraging for the eLib programme, but it is necessary for the gateways to be more effectively promoted. The study also found that academics do not have the same misgivings about the general search engines as the information professionals and seem to use them more readily than the gateways

    A 7mm line survey of the shocked and disrupted molecular gas towards the W28 field TeV gamma-ray sources

    We present 7mm Mopra observations of the dense molecular gas towards the W28 supernova remnant (SNR) field, following a previous 12mm line survey of this region. These observations take advantage of the 7mm beam size to probe the dense and disrupted gas in the region at ~1 arcmin scales. Our observations are focused towards the north-eastern (NE) HESS J1801-233 and southern HESS J1800-240B TeV gamma-ray sources, with slightly less observations towards HESS J1800-240A & C. Using the CS (1-0) transition we reveal multiple regions of dense gas, nH2 ~10^5 cm^-3. We report the discovery of dense gas towards HESS J1800-240C, at the site of a 1720MHz OH maser. The NE molecular cloud is known to be disrupted, many 1720MHz OH masers and broad CO line emission are detected at the rim of W28. Here we reveal this shock interaction region contains generally extended clumpy CS, as well as clumpy SiO and CH3OH emission with broad line profiles. The FWHM of the molecular lines extend up to 18 km/s on the W28 side of the NE cloud. The detection of SiO towards maser clumps OH C, D, E & F provide further evidence of the shocked conditions in the NE cloud. Several other lines associated with star formation are also detected towards the southern source, notably the energetic HII complex G5.89-0.39. The spatial match of dense gas with the TeV emission further supports the CR origin for the gamma-rays. We estimate the mass of several extended dense clouds within the field and predict the TeV flux from the dense cloud components. The predicted fluxes are on the order of 10^{-14} - 10^{-13} ph/cm^2/s, which should be detectable and possibly resolved by a future TeV instrument, such as the Cherenkov Telescope Array.Comment: 18 pages + 2 pages appendix accepted for publication in MNRA

    4-Hydroxyphenylpyruvate Dioxygenase (HPPD)-Inhibiting Herbicides: Past, Present, and Future

    The 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD)-inhibiting herbicides are primarily used for weed control in corn, barley, oat, rice, sorghum, sugarcane, and wheat production fields in the United States. The objectives of this review were to summarize (1) the history of HPPD-inhibitor and their use in the United States, (2) HPPD-inhibitor resistant weeds, their mechanism of resistance, and management, (3) interaction of HPPD-inhibitor with other herbicides, and (4) the future of HPPD-inhibitor-resistant crops. As of 2022, three broadleaf weeds (Palmer amaranth, waterhemp, and wild radish) have evolved resistance to the HPPD-inhibitor. The predominance of metabolic resistance to HPPD-inhibitor was found in aforementioned three weed species. Management of HPPD-inhibitor-resistant weeds can be accomplished using alternate herbicides such as glyphosate, glufosinate, 2,4-D, or dicamba; however, metabolic resistance poses a serious challenge, as the weeds may be cross-resistant to other herbicide sites of action, leading to limited herbicide options. The HPPD-inhibitor is commonly applied with photosystem II (PS II)-inhibitor to increase efficacy and weed control spectrum. The synergism with HPPD-inhibitor arises from depletion of plastoquinones, which allows increased binding of PS II-inhibitor to the D1 protein. New HPPD-inhibitor from azole carboxamides class is in development and expected to be available in the near future. The HPPD-inhibitor-resistant crops have been developed through overexpression of a resistant bacterial HPPD enzyme in plants and the overexpression of transgenes for HPPD and a microbial gene that enhances the production of HPPD substrate. Isoxaflutole-resistant soybean is commercially available, and it is expected that soybean resistant to other HPPD-inhibitor such as mesotrione, stacked with resistance to other herbicides, will be available in the near future

    Estimating Household and Community Transmission of Ocular Chlamydia trachomatis

    Trachoma is a major cause of blindness worldwide and results from ocular infection with the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. Mass distribution of antibiotics in communities is part of the strategy to eliminate blindness due to trachoma. Targeted treatment of infected households could be more efficient, but the success of such a strategy will depend on the extent of transmission of infection between members of the same household and between members of the community. In this work, we estimated the magnitude of household and community transmission in four populations, two from The Gambia and two from Tanzania. We found that, in general, transmission of the bacteria within households is very efficient. In three of the four populations, persistent infection within households was predicted by the high level of household transmission (a phenomenon observed in longitudinal studies of trachoma). In all of the studied populations, individuals who live in households with more individuals contribute more to the number of new infections in the community than those who live with fewer individuals. Further studies are required to identify and examine household-targeted approaches to treatment

    The influence of 'significant others' on persistent back pain and work participation: a qualitative exploration of illness perceptions

    Background Individual illness perceptions have been highlighted as important influences on clinical outcomes for back pain. However, the illness perceptions of 'significant others' (spouse/partner/close family member) are rarely explored, particularly in relation to persistent back pain and work participation. The aim of this study was to initiate qualitative research in this area in order to further understand these wider influences on outcome. Methods Semi-structured interviews based on the chronic pain version of the Illness Perceptions Questionnaire-Revised were conducted with a convenience sample of UK disability benefit claimants, along with their significant others (n=5 dyads). Data were analysed using template analysis. Results Significant others shared, and perhaps further reinforced, claimants' unhelpful illness beliefs including fear of pain/re-injury associated with certain types of work and activity, and pessimism about the likelihood of return to work. In some cases, significant others appeared more resigned to the permanence and negative inevitable consequences of the claimant's back pain condition on work participation, and were more sceptical about the availability of suitable work and sympathy from employers. In their pursuit of authenticity, claimants were keen to stress their desire to work whilst emphasising how the severity and physical limitations of their condition prevented them from doing so. In this vein, and seemingly based on their perceptions of what makes a 'good' significant other, significant others acted as a 'witness to pain', supporting claimants' self-limiting behaviour and statements of incapacity, often responding with empathy and assistance. The beliefs and responses of significant others may also have been influenced by their own experience of chronic illness, thus participants lives were often intertwined and defined by illness. Conclusions The findings from this exploratory study reveal how others and wider social circumstances might contribute both to the propensity of persistent back pain and to its consequences. This is an area that has received little attention to date, and wider support of these findings may usefully inform the design of future intervention programmes aimed at restoring work participation

    Isolation of human intrahepatic leukocytes for phenotypic and functional characterization by flow cytometry

    With the growing appreciation of tissue-resident immunity, studying tissue-specific immune cells contributing to both homeostasis and disease is imperative. Here, we provide a protocol for the isolation of human intrahepatic leukocytes (IHL) maximizing viability, purity, and yield. Our protocol is scalable by tissue weight, allowing for reproducible and efficient IHL liberation suitable for functional characterization, cell isolation, and profiling by flow (or mass) cytometry. Furthermore, we provide a "guide" to determine an expected IHL yield per gram of tissue processed. For complete details on the use and execution of this protocol, please refer to Stegmann et al.
