Extraction efficiency of a pulse column of varied geometry
An investigation was made of the effects of plate spacing, hole diameter, percent free plate area, pulse amplitude, and pulse frequency on the extraction efficiency of a 1-in. diameter pulse column. The hexone-acetic acid-water system was used. Two levels of each factor were incorporated in an experimental design based on statistical methods. \u27The data were analyzed by the analysis of variance technique
TurbuStat: Turbulence Statistics in Python
We present TurbuStat (v1.0): a Python package for computing turbulence
statistics in spectral-line data cubes. TurbuStat includes implementations of
fourteen methods for recovering turbulent properties from observational data.
Additional features of the software include: distance metrics for comparing two
data sets; a segmented linear model for fitting lines with a break-point; a
two-dimensional elliptical power-law model; multi-core fast-fourier-transform
support; a suite for producing simulated observations of fractional Brownian
Motion fields, including two-dimensional images and optically-thin HI data
cubes; and functions for creating realistic world coordinate system information
for synthetic observations. This paper summarizes the TurbuStat package and
provides representative examples using several different methods. TurbuStat is
an open-source package and we welcome community feedback and contributions.Comment: Accepted in AJ. 21 pages, 8 figure
Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) Engineering Test Facility (ETF) 200 MWe power plant. Design Requirements Document (DRD)
A description and the design requirements for the 200 MWe (nominal) net output MHD Engineering Test Facility (ETF) Conceptual Design, are presented. Performance requirements for the plant are identified and process conditions are indicated at interface stations between the major systems comprising the plant. Also included are the description, functions, interfaces and requirements for each of these major systems. The lastest information (1980-1981) from the MHD technology program are integrated with elements of a conventional steam electric power generating plant
Late stages of the evolution of A-type stars on the main sequence: comparison between observed chemical abundances and diffusion models for 8 Am stars of the Praesepe cluster
Aims. We aim to provide observational constraints on diffusion models that
predict peculiar chemical abundances in the atmospheres of Am stars. We also
intend to check if chemical peculiarities and slow rotation can be explained by
the presence of a weak magnetic field.
Methods. We have obtained high resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio spectra
of eight previously-classified Am stars, two normal A-type stars and one Blue
Straggler, considered to be members of the Praesepe cluster. For all of these
stars we have determined fundamental parameters and photospheric abundances for
a large number of chemical elements, with a higher precision than was ever
obtained before for this cluster. For seven of these stars we also obtained
spectra in circular polarization and applied the LSD technique to constrain the
longitudinal magnetic field.
Results. No magnetic field was detected in any of the analysed stars. HD
73666, a Blue Straggler previously considered as an Ap (Si) star, turns out to
have the abundances of a normal A-type star. Am classification is not confirmed
for HD 72942. For HD 73709 we have also calculated synthetic Delta-a photometry
that is in good agreement with the observations. There is a generally good
agreement between abundance predictions of diffusion models and values that we
have obtained for the remaining Am stars. However, the observed Na and S
abundances deviate from the predictions by 0.6 dex and >0.25 dex respectively.
Li appears to be overabundant in three stars of our sample.Comment: Accepted for publication on A&
The Supersonic Project: SIGOs, A Proposed Progenitor to Globular Clusters, and Their Connections to Gravitational-wave Anisotropies
Supersonically induced gas objects (SIGOs), are structures with little to no dark-matter component predicted to exist in regions of the universe with large relative velocities between baryons and dark matter at the time of recombination. They have been suggested to be the progenitors of present-day globular clusters. Using simulations, SIGOs have been studied on small scales (around 2 Mpc) where these relative velocities are coherent. However, it is challenging to study SIGOs using simulations on large scales due to the varying relative velocities at scales larger than a few Mpc. Here, we study SIGO abundances semi-analytically: using perturbation theory, we predict the number density of SIGOs analytically, and compare these results to small-box numerical simulations. We use the agreement between the numerical and analytic calculations to extrapolate the large-scale variation of SIGO abundances over different stream velocities. As a result, we predict similar large-scale variations of objects with high gas densities before reionization that could possibly be observed by JWST. If indeed SIGOs are progenitors of globular clusters, then we expect a similar variation of globular cluster abundances over large scales. Significantly, we find that the expected number density of SIGOs is consistent with observed globular cluster number densities. As a proof-of-concept, and because globular clusters were proposed to be natural formation sites for gravitational wave sources from binary black-hole mergers, we show that SIGOs should imprint an anisotropy on the gravitational wave signal on the sky, consistent with their distribution
The effect of rotation on the abundances of the chemical elements of the A-type stars in the Praesepe cluster
We study how chemical abundances of late B-, A- and early F-type stars evolve
with time, and we search for correlations between the abundance of chemical
elements and other stellar parameters, such as effective temperature and Vsini.
We have observed a large number of B-, A- and F-type stars belonging to open
clusters of different ages. In this paper we concentrate on the Praesepe
cluster (log t = 8.85), for which we have obtained high resolution, high
signal-to-noise ratio spectra of sixteen normal A- and F-type stars and one Am
star, using the SOPHIE spectrograph of the Observatoire de Haute-Provence. For
all the observed stars, we have derived fundamental parameters and chemical
abundances. In addition, we discuss another eight Am stars belonging to the
same cluster, for which the abundance analysis had been presented in a previous
paper. We find a strong correlation between peculiarity of Am stars and Vsini.
The abundance of the elements underabundant in Am stars increases with Vsini,
while it decreases for the overabundant elements. Chemical abundances of
various elements appear correlated with the iron abundance.Comment: Accepted for publication on A&
