Social distancing strategies against disease spreading
The recurrent infectious diseases and their increasing impact on the society
has promoted the study of strategies to slow down the epidemic spreading. In
this review we outline the applications of percolation theory to describe
strategies against epidemic spreading on complex networks. We give a general
outlook of the relation between link percolation and the
susceptible-infected-recovered model, and introduce the node void percolation
process to describe the dilution of the network composed by healthy individual,
, the network that sustain the functionality of a society. Then, we survey
two strategies: the quenched disorder strategy where an heterogeneous
distribution of contact intensities is induced in society, and the intermittent
social distancing strategy where health individuals are persuaded to avoid
contact with their neighbors for intermittent periods of time. Using
percolation tools, we show that both strategies may halt the epidemic
spreading. Finally, we discuss the role of the transmissibility, , the
effective probability to transmit a disease, on the performance of the
strategies to slow down the epidemic spreading.Comment: to be published in "Perspectives and Challenges in Statistical

Transient dynamics of a flexible rotor with squeeze film dampers
A series of simulated blade loss tests are reported on a test rotor designed to operate above its second bending critical speed. A series of analyses were performed which predicted the transient behavior of the test rig for each of the blade loss tests. The scope of the program included the investigation of transient rotor dynamics of a flexible rotor system, similar to modern flexible jet engine rotors, both with and without squeeze film dampers. The results substantiate the effectiveness of squeeze film dampers and document the ability of available analytical methods to predict their effectiveness and behavior
Effect of degree correlations above the first shell on the percolation transition
The use of degree-degree correlations to model realistic networks which are
characterized by their Pearson's coefficient, has become widespread. However
the effect on how different correlation algorithms produce different results on
processes on top of them, has not yet been discussed. In this letter, using
different correlation algorithms to generate assortative networks, we show that
for very assortative networks the behavior of the main observables in
percolation processes depends on the algorithm used to build the network. The
different alghoritms used here introduce different inner structures that are
missed in Pearson's coefficient. We explain the different behaviors through a
generalization of Pearson's coefficient that allows to study the correlations
at chemical distances l from a root node. We apply our findings to real
networks.Comment: In press EP
Increase in the selenium content of extra virgin olive oil: quantitative and qualitative implications
The biofortification of food crops for human consumption is a direct strategy increasing dietary intake of selenium (Se). The aim of this study was to evaluate the possibility of increasing the Se content of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) by spraying the olive tree canopy with sodium selenate and the effect of the increase in Se on the chemical properties and sensory characteristics of the EVOO. Se treatments were up to 50 times more effective in enhancing Se content in the EVOO compared with the untreated controls. Se concentration in all the EVOO samples can be considered adequate and useful for providing the human diet with the correct dose of Se. Se-enriched EVOO showed a significant increase in pigment and phenol content.
Triosephosphate Isomerases in Italian Ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) : Characterization and Susceptibility to Herbicides
The effect of treatments with four herbicides and a safener on the activity of triosephosphate
isomerase (TPI) extracted from shoots of Italian ryegrass was investigated. It was found that
atrazine and fluorodifen, herbicides which interfere with photosynthesis, caused a decrease in
measured enzyme activity. In addition, the in vitro effect of oxidized glutathione (GSSG), a
compound produced in situations of oxidative stress, on TPI activity was investigated. It was shown
that GSSG was a strong inhibitor of enzyme activity, at low concentrations in a dose-timedependent
manner. The enzyme extracts were submitted to chromatographic purifications and to
two-dimensional electrophoresis. Some spots had molecular masses ranging between 20 and 30
kDa and were characterized and identified by LC-ESI-MS/MS as TPIs. The mass spectrometry also
made it possible to identify the presence of cysteine residues that could be subjected to
S-glutathionylation, which regulate the enzyme activity
Gut microbiota as target for innovative strategies against food allergy.
The dramatic increase in food allergy prevalence and severity globally requires effective strategies. Food allergy derives from a defect in immune tolerance mechanisms. Immune tolerance is modulated by gut microbiota function and structure, and microbiome alterations (dysbiosis) have a pivotal role in the development of food allergy. Environmental factors, including a low-fiber/high-fat diet, cesarean delivery, antiseptic agents, lack of breastfeeding, and drugs can induce gut microbiome dysbiosis, and have been associated with food allergy. New experimental tools and technologies have provided information regarding the role of metabolites generated from dietary nutrients and selected probiotic strains that could act on immune tolerance mechanisms. The mechanisms are multiple and still not completely defined. Increasing evidence has provided useful information on optimal bacterial species/strains, dosage, and timing for intervention. The increased knowledge of the crucial role played by nutrients and gut microbiota-derived metabolites is opening the way to a post-biotic approach in the stimulation of immune tolerance through epigenetic regulation. This review focused on the potential role of gut microbiome as the target for innovative strategies against food allergy
Pain symptomology, functional impact, and treatment of people with Neurofibromatosis type 1
Introduction: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a neurogenetic disorder affecting 1 in 3000 people worldwide, where individuals are prone to develop benign and malignant tumors. In addition, many people with NF1 complain of pain that limits their daily functioning. Due to the complexity of the disorder, there are few options for treating pain symptoms besides surgery and medications. Moreover, the spectrum of pain symptomatology and treatment, as well as the mechanisms underlying NF1-associated pain, has been understudied.
Methodology: To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a survey of 255 adults with NF1, leveraging the Washington University NF1 Patient Registry Initiative (NPRI) database. Demographic and pain data were collected using a Qualtrics survey.
Results: All participants had at least one surgical procedure, with 55% reporting having at least one surgery within the last year and 17% being currently prescribed opioid medication. A positive relationship was shown (
Conclusion: The current study demonstrates that individuals with NF1 report a higher incidence of pain severity and interference than observed in NF1 previous studies, with pain symptoms not localized to any specific region of the body. The consideration for alternative treatments and careful monitoring of current treatments that are more conservative or have less potential adverse side effects may improve pain management and reduce the risk of developing medication dependence
Deformation of geometry and bifurcation of vortex rings
We construct a smooth family of Hamiltonian systems, together with a family
of group symmetries and momentum maps, for the dynamics of point vortices on
surfaces parametrized by the curvature of the surface. Equivariant bifurcations
in this family are characterized, whence the stability of the Thomson heptagon
is deduced without recourse to the Birkhoff normal form, which has hitherto
been a necessary tool.Comment: 26 page
