Effect of combined oral contraceptive use on platelet volume in women at reproductive age

    No full text
Investigation: Combined oral contraceptives use is associated with an increased risk of developing venous and arterial thromboembolic events. Platelet size, measured as mean platelet volume (MPV), is associated with platelet reactivity. Methods: Ninety-five women using oral contraceptives for contraception were investigated retrospectively. The patients' blood pressure, pulse and hematological values at application and at the sixth month were evaluated retrospectively. Results: There was no difference between the values of blood pressure (systolic and diastolic), pulse, hematological values (which contain leukocytes, platelets and mean platelet volume) at application and at the sixth month. Conclusion: We determined that using oral contraceptives for contraception did not change MPV values in young women

Experimental determination of the dose deposition profile of a Sr-90 beta source

Three different methods for characterising the dose deposition profile of a Sr-90/Y-90 radioactive source are described: GAFChromic film dosimetry, Thermoluminescence (TL) and Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL). For the film measurements, GAFChromic film samples were stacked at different depths between polyethylene terephthalate (PET) foils. For TL, the thickness of a TLD-500 dosemeter was gradually reduced by polishing and the TL from chips of different thickness was used in conjunction with a mathematical model based on the exponential attenuation of dose inside the crystal to determine the decay constant for the dose-depth profile. Finally, an OSL reader with confocal stimulation / detection capabilities was used to map the two-dimensional dose distribution in TLD-500 dosemeters as a function of depth. The shapes of the dose deposition profiles obtained from all the investigated methods are in good agreement

The rapid visualization of resistivity inhomogeneities in high-resistivity semiconductor films

This paper describes for the first time an application of an ionization type semiconductor photographic system using a chalcopyrite-type semiconductor (CuInSe2) copper-indium-diselenide film as a target for rapid visulization of resistivity inhomogeneities. The CuInSe2 semiconductor films with a resistivity of 10(7) Omega cm (thickness 0.25 mu m) in a planar gas discharge cell, have been studied. A measurement is realized by recording the spatial distribution of the gas discharge radiation intensity between two parallel electrodes. A gas discharge gap has been formed by a dielectric separator with thicknesses ranging from 40 to 60 mu m. A discharge has been realized in air at pressures from 760-60 Torr. The assessment of the resistivity inhomogeneities is then based on an analysis of the discharge radiation, visualized by a photograph taken through the SnO2 film
