Studies evidence of environmental disparities by which poor and minority communities are disproportionately exposed to disasters, are less prepared, and have less access to relief agencies. Makes recommendations for preparedness and environmental justice

Unlocking the biological potential of proteins from edible insects through enzymatic hydrolysis: a review

peer-reviewedThis review, focusing on studies published between 2005 and 2017, analysed the literature on the generation of bioactive peptides (BAPs) from edible insect proteins following enzymatic hydrolysis. The protein extraction and quantification methodologies used for edible insects varied considerably. While several edible insects have been evaluated for their ability to release BAPs, silkworm (Bombyx mori) is currently the most studied. Specifically, the angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory, antioxidant and antidiabetic properties of edible insect protein enzymatic hydrolysates have been studied. Potent in vitro ACE inhibitory and antioxidant hydrolysates/peptides have been reported. In certain instances, these properties were validated in small animal studies (i.e. hypotensive effects). Enzymatic hydrolysis of edible insect proteins may also enhance technofunctional properties (i.e. solubility). The wider application of enzymatic hydrolysis protocols to edible insect proteins may ultimately allow for the increased discovery and utilisation of novel BAPs as sustainable protein/peptide sources for human nutrition.ACCEPTEDpeer-reviewe

Bristol advisory committee on climate change: One City climate strategy progress review - February 2023

This report from the Bristol Advisory Committee on Climate Change (BACCC) reviews citywide progress on tackling the climate crisis and concludes that, although there is some positive progress, the city is still way off meeting its 2030 carbon neutral and climate resilient targets.BACCC is an independent committee which provides expert advice on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to the impacts of a changing climate. Their latest report is an assessment of progress against the One City Climate Strategy which was launched by the Environment Board in March 2020, setting out the pathway for the city to reduce carbon emissions and build resilience to a changing climate by 2030

Kanak women artists seeking to create a strong identity in the contemporary world must position themselves in relation to the prominent touristic presence as well as in relation to neo-traditional tribalism. The bodily aesthetics of the female tourist and the Kanak woman operates as a ground of cultural differentiation. Previous social science on the importance of clothing or nudity, including Maurice Leenhardt, Norbert Elias and Jean- Claude Kaufmann is challenged in this analysis of Kanak art in relation to contemporary body politics. Bullard Alice. From Colonization to Globalization

These activists argue that development aid for Mauritania only further enriches the elite, and reinforces their power over disenfranchised slaves, former slaves, and Black Mauritanians.   Mauritanian activists in the United States seek to generate a broad social movement that protests World Bank and other large-scale investments in their country.   This essay explores the successes and failures of the Mauritanians' efforts to ignite mass protests in the United States.   It evaluates the competing goals of various interest groups, weighs the US.   diplomatic interests, and documents the continuing flow of World Bank credits into the Mauritania.   The search for powerful allies of the dispossessed and enslaved at the time of this writing remains unfinished business
