    Service Selection using Predictive Models and Monte-Carlo Tree Search

    This article proposes a method for automated service selection to improve treatment efficacy and reduce re-hospitalization costs. A predictive model is developed using the National Home and Hospice Care Survey (NHHCS) dataset to quantify the effect of care services on the risk of re-hospitalization. By taking the patient's characteristics and other selected services into account, the model is able to indicate the overall effectiveness of a combination of services for a specific NHHCS patient. The developed model is incorporated in Monte-Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) to determine optimal combinations of services that minimize the risk of emergency re-hospitalization. MCTS serves as a risk minimization algorithm in this case, using the predictive model for guidance during the search. Using this method on the NHHCS dataset, a significant reduction in risk of re-hospitalization is observed compared to the original selections made by clinicians. An 11.89 percentage points risk reduction is achieved on average. Higher reductions of roughly 40 percentage points on average are observed for NHHCS patients in the highest risk categories. These results seem to indicate that there is enormous potential for improving service selection in the near future

    Policy interpretations and manifestation of biocultural diversity in urbanized Europe : conservation of lived biodiversity

    Biocultural diversity, which refers to the inextricable link between biodiversity and cultural diversity, has been predominantly associated with the traditional ways in which indigenous people in tropical countries interact with the natural environment. But it does not have to be restricted to these circumstances. Biocultural diversity may also be regarded as an interesting concept for understanding how people in industrialized and globalized societies deal with nature. This paper explores biocultural diversity in 20 European cities by considering (i) how biocultural diversity is interpreted in urban planning and governance, and (ii) what actual manifestations of biocultural diversity are present in these cities. Despite the fact that the concept of biocultural diversity was hardly recognized by city authorities, interviewees gave many examples of how biodiversity and cultural diversity are taken into account in (in) formal city policies. The research revealed two main manifestations of biocultural diversity within urban Europe: biocultural diversity grounded in ecological features, and cultural values as a basic foundation for biocultural diversity. Consequently, urban biocultural diversity was found to have two spatial levels: the city level and the site level. The former is the domain of governmental policy makers who discuss biocultural diversity in 'green space networks' in a rather static way. The latter is the domain where citizens participate in decisionmaking and the management of green spaces; it is here that cultural dynamics are most acknowledged.Peer reviewe

    Anti-alignments in conformance checking: the dark side of process models

    Conformance checking techniques asses the suitability of a process model in representing an underlying process, observed through a collection of real executions. These techniques suffer from the wellknown state space explosion problem, hence handling process models exhibiting large or even infinite state spaces remains a challenge. One important metric in conformance checking is to asses the precision of the model with respect to the observed executions, i.e., characterize the ability of the model to produce behavior unrelated to the one observed. By avoiding the computation of the full state space of a model, current techniques only provide estimations of the precision metric, which in some situations tend to be very optimistic, thus hiding real problems a process model may have. In this paper we present the notion of antialignment as a concept to help unveiling traces in the model that may deviate significantly from the observed behavior. Using anti-alignments, current estimations can be improved, e.g., in precision checking. We show how to express the problem of finding anti-alignments as the satisfiability of a Boolean formula, and provide a tool which can deal with large models efficiently.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    Synthesis and photophysical properties of benzotriazole-derived unnatural α -amino acids

    The synthesis of a new class of benzotriazole-derived α-amino acid is described using a highly efficient nucleophilic aromatic substitution of ortho-fluoronitrobenzenes with l-3-aminoalanine and a polymer-supported nitrite reagent-mediated diazotization and cyclization of the subsequent 1,2-aryldiamines as the key steps. Further functionalization of the benzotriazole unit by preparation of halogenated analogues and Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling with aryl boronic acids allowed the synthesis of α-amino acids with conjugated side chains. Analysis of the photophysical properties of these α-amino acids revealed that incorporation of electron-rich substituents results in charge-transfer-based, fluorescent compounds with MegaStokes shifts
