An estimating equations approach to fitting latent exposure models with longitudinal health outcomes
The analysis of data arising from environmental health studies which collect
a large number of measures of exposure can benefit from using latent variable
models to summarize exposure information. However, difficulties with estimation
of model parameters may arise since existing fitting procedures for linear
latent variable models require correctly specified residual variance structures
for unbiased estimation of regression parameters quantifying the association
between (latent) exposure and health outcomes. We propose an estimating
equations approach for latent exposure models with longitudinal health outcomes
which is robust to misspecification of the outcome variance. We show that
compared to maximum likelihood, the loss of efficiency of the proposed method
is relatively small when the model is correctly specified. The proposed
equations formalize the ad-hoc regression on factor scores procedure, and
generalize regression calibration. We propose two weighting schemes for the
equations, and compare their efficiency. We apply this method to a study of the

Quasi-film commercials. Analysis of selected car manufacturer campaigns
When seeking original forms of expression, contemporary commercials often reach for the achievements of film making. That is reflected in references to the conventions of certain film genres, and the references to particular films. The goal of the article was to present selected examples of the relationships between commercials and film, which can be found in car manufacturer advertising campaigns (Toyota, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz). The analysis of the gathered study material enabled me to identify two forms of quasi-film commercials: a TV spot and a short film
The effects of eccentric training on hamstring muscle architecture: a systematic review
The architectural features of the hamstring muscle group are important to prevent injury or to reduce the risk of re-injury. Besides, eccentric training is often used in the rehabilitation of hamstring injuries. The aim of this systematic review was to examine the changes created by eccentric training on hamstring muscle architecture and to determine the minimal values of training duration and intensity for requiring functional changes. The research was conducted on the PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, COCHRANE, CINAHL, and Pedro databases. Full-text studies examining the effect of eccentric training on at least one parameter of the hamstring muscle architecture were included in the review. Studies on cadavers and animals and studies involving different types of training combined with eccentric training were excluded. Twelve of the 7954 studies met the set criteria. According to the results, eccentric training undoubtedly increases fiber length. However, the pennation angle tends to decrease. On the other hand, muscle thickness and cross-sectional area tends to increase depending on the eccentric training. Although the frequency, number of sets and number of repetitions in sets were similar in the examined some studies, muscle architecture changes were different. We think that eccentric training duration and the number of repetitions in total or per training session seem to have an impact on muscle architecture. In order to determine the minimal eccentric training program that can create these changes, quality research is needed to examine the duration, intensity and methods of eccentric training
IGR J17445-2747 - yet another X-ray burster in the Galactic bulge
The discovery of a type I X-ray burst from the faint unidentified transient
source IGR J17445-2747 in the Galactic bulge by the JEM-X telescope onboard the
INTEGRAL observatory is reported. Type I bursts are believed to be associated
with thermonuclear explosions of accreted matter on the surface of a neutron
star with a weak magnetic field in a low-mass X-ray binary. Thus, this

Genetic typing of Candida albicans strains isolated from the oral cavity of patients with denture stomatitis before and after itraconazole therapy
This study determined, by molecular typing of C. albicans species isolated from denture stomatitis patients with a mycological relapse six
months after successful itraconazole therapy, whether there had been recurrence of infection with the same strain(s), selection of particular
strains or infection with new strains of C. albicans. Forty patients with long-standing Candida-associated denture stomatitis were assigned
either cyclodextrin itraconazole solution or itraconazole capsules (100mg b.d. for 15 days). Palatal erythema was measured and imprint
cultures undertaken at baseline and at 15 days, four weeks and six months after treatment commenced. Yeast isolates were formally
identified and chromosomal DNA was extracted from pairs of isolates from those patients with C. albicans present at baseline and six
months after treatment commenced. Southern blotting of EcoRI-digested chromosomal DNA was performed using the C. albicans-specific
27A repetitive element as a probe. Eighteen of 36 patients were infected with C. albicans at baseline and six months after treatment
commenced. Overall, 13 genetically different strains of C. albicans were found. However, in 17 of 18 patients, the C. albicans strains
isolated prior to itraconazole therapy and six months later were the same. Thus recurrence of denture stomatitis in these individuals was
due to re-colonisation by the original strain, rather than re-infection with a different strain. Key words: Genotyping, C. albicans, denture

A focal plane detector design for a wide-band Laue-lens telescope
The energy range above 60 keV is important for the study of many open
problems in high energy astrophysics such as the role of Inverse Compton with
respect to synchrotron or thermal processes in GRBs, non thermal mechanisms in
SNR, the study of the high energy cut-offs in AGN spectra, and the detection of
nuclear and annihilation lines. Recently the development of high energy Laue
lenses with broad energy bandpasses from 60 to 600 keV have been proposed for a
Hard X ray focusing Telescope (HAXTEL) in order to study the X-ray continuum of
celestial sources. The required focal plane detector should have high detection
efficiency over the entire operative range, a spatial resolution of about 1 mm,
an energy resolution of a few keV at 500 keV and a sensitivity to linear
polarization. We describe a possible configuration of the focal plane detector
based on several CdTe/CZT pixelated layers stacked together to achieve the
required detection efficiency at high energy. Each layer can operate both as a
separate position sensitive detector and polarimeter or work with other layers
to increase the overall photopeak efficiency. Each layer has a hexagonal shape
in order to minimize the detector surface required to cover the lens field of
view. The pixels would have the same geometry so as to provide the best
coupling with the lens point spread function and to increase the symmetry for

Benchmark Calculations for Perchlorate from Three Human Cohorts
The presence of low concentrations of perchlorate in some drinking water sources has led to concern regarding potential effects on the thyroid. In a recently published report, the National Academy of Sciences indicated that the perchlorate dose required to cause hypothyroidism in adults would probably be > 0.40 mg/kg-day for months or longer. In this study, we calculated benchmark doses for perchlorate from thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and free thyroxine (T(4)) serum indicators from two occupational cohorts with long-term exposure to perchlorate, and from a clinical study of volunteers exposed to perchlorate for 2 weeks. The benchmark dose for a particular serum indicator was defined as the dose predicted to cause an additional 5 or 10% of persons to have a serum measurement outside of the normal range. Using the data from the clinical study, we estimated the half-life of perchlorate in serum at 7.5 hr and the volume of distribution at 0.34 L/kg. Using these estimates and measurements of perchlorate in serum or urine, doses in the occupational cohorts were estimated and used in benchmark calculations. Because none of the three studies found a significant effect of perchlorate on TSH or free T(4), all of the benchmark dose estimates were indistinguishable from infinity. The lower 95% statistical confidence limits on benchmark doses estimated from a combined analysis of the two occupational studies ranged from 0.21 to 0.56 mg/kg-day for free T(4) index and from 0.36 to 0.92 mg/kg-day for TSH. Statistical complexity of reasons for encounter in high users of out of hours primary care:analysis of a national service
Background: Managing demand for urgent and unscheduled care is a major problem for health services globally. A particular issue is that some patients appear to make heavy use of services, including primary care out of hours. We hypothesised that greater variation (statistical complexity) in reasons for attending primary care out of hours services may be a useful marker of patients at high risk of ongoing heavy service use. Methods: We analysed an anonymised dataset of contacts with the primary care out of hours care for Scotland in 2011. This contained 120,395 contacts from 13,981 high-using patients who made 5 or more contacts during a calendar year. We allocated the stated reason for each encounter into one of 14 categories. For each patient we calculated measures of statistical complexity of reasons for encounter including the count of different categories, Herfindahl index and statistical entropy of either the categories themselves, or the category transitions. We examined the association of these measures of statistical complexity with patient and healthcare use characteristics. Results: The high users comprised 2.4% of adults using the service and accounted for 15% of all contacts. Statistical complexity (as entropy of categories) increased with number of contacts but was not substantially influenced by either patient age or sex. This lack of association with age was unexpected as with increasing multi-morbidity one would expect greater variability in reason for encounter. Between 5 and 10 consultations, higher entropy was associated with a reduced likelihood of further consultations. In contrast, the occurrence of one or more contacts for a mental health problem was associated with increased likelihood of further consultations. Conclusion: Complexity of reason for encounter can be estimated in an out of hours primary care setting. Similar levels of statistical complexity are seen in younger and older adults (suggesting that it is more to do with consultation behaviour than morbidity) but it is not a predictor of ongoing high use of urgent care.</p
