    Cybercrimes in the aftermath of COVID-19: Present concerns and future directions

    Cybercrimes are broadly defined as criminal activities carried out using computers or computer networks. Given the rapid and considerable shifts in Internet use and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on cybercrime rates, online behaviours have attracted increased public and policy attention. In this article, we map the landscape of cybercrime in the UK by first reviewing legislation and policy, as well as examine barriers to reporting and address investigative challenges. Given the indisputable rise in cybercrime and its mental health impacts, we propose a four-facet approach for research and practice in this field with an eye to systemic shifts and strategies to combat cybercrime holistically: community alliances and social support, state intervention, and infrastructural sensitivity to user diversity. Lastly, empirical evidence from research guides the design of data-driven technology and provision of advice/interventions to provide a safer digital landscape — hence the importance for more informative research

    Feasibility and Detailing of Post-tensioned Timber Buildings for Seismic Areas

    Paper 53This paper describes the structural design and selection of construction detailing for low-rise multi-storey timber buildings using a new and exciting structural timber system. This system, originally developed for use with pre-cast concrete, combines the use of un-bonded post-tensioning techniques and additional sources of energy dissipation. This system eliminates residual displacement, while greatly reducing the damage to structural members during a significant seismic event. The paper shows how this new structural system can be used with large size structural timber members manufactured from laminated veneer lumber (LVL) or glulam timber, for use in multistorey buildings, with lateral load resistance provided by post-tensioned structural timber frames or walls, separately or in combination. An extensive on-going research program at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand has tested a wide range of beam-to-column, wall-to-foundation and column-to-foundation connections under simulated seismic loading, all giving excellent results. As part of this contribution, a case study of the design methods, construction options, cost and feasibility of a six storey timber office building in a moderate seismic area is carried out. The structural design of this building allowed investigation of different methods of structural analysis, and the development of many construction and connection details offering feasibility of rapid construction. Total building cost was evaluated and compared to equivalent steel and reinforced concrete options

    Search for antiproton decay at the Fermilab Antiproton Accumulator

    A search for antiproton decay has been made at the Fermilab Antiproton Accumulator. Limits are placed on thirteen antiproton decay modes. The results include the first explicit experimental limits on the muonic decay modes of the antiproton, and the first limits on the decay modes e- gamma gamma, and e- omega. The most stringent limit is for the decay mode pbar-> e- gamma. At 90% C.L. we find that tau/B(pbar-> e- gamma) > 7 x 10^5 yr. The most stringent limit for decay modes with a muon in the final state is for the decay pbar-> mu- gamma. At 90% C.L. we find that tau/B(pbar-> mu- gamma) > 5 x 10^4 yr.Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures.     Life History and Narrative Analysis: Feminist Methodologies Contextualizing Black Women\u27s Experiences with Severe Mental Illness

    This paper discusses a methodological approach to research that enhances critical analysis by contextualizing qualitative research findings within participants\u27 individual experiences. We demonstrate the combined use of life history methods and feminist narrative analysis to explore Black women\u27s everyday experiences with mental illness, from their perspectives. These interpretive methods reach beyond pathologized conceptions of identity and adjustment that often narrowly characterize mental illness among Black women. Instead, these methods holistically describe a participant\u27s experiences and strategies she uses to pursue goals and enhance her life. The use of the methods is illustrated with examples from the life narrative of Maria, a Black woman living with serious mental illness. Our findings underscore the need for rigorous, culturally appropriate methods and further research to evaluate participants\u27 standpoints and needs, and interventions to facilitate understanding and improved outcomes

    Synchronization reveals topological scales in complex networks

    We study the relationship between topological scales and dynamic time scales in complex networks. The analysis is based on the full dynamics towards synchronization of a system of coupled oscillators. In the synchronization process, modular structures corresponding to well defined communities of nodes emerge in different time scales, ordered in a hierarchical way.     Bubble Growth in Superfluid 3-He: The Dynamics of the Curved A-B Interface

    We study the hydrodynamics of the A-B interface with finite curvature. The interface tension is shown to enhance both the transition velocity and the amplitudes of second sound.
