    Achievable efficiencies for probabilistically cloning the states

    Full text link
    We present an example of quantum computational tasks whose performance is enhanced if we distribute quantum information using quantum cloning. Furthermore we give achievable efficiencies for probabilistic cloning the quantum states used in implemented tasks for which cloning provides some enhancement in performance.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure

    A*+BFHS: A Hybrid Heuristic Search Algorithm

    Full text link
    We present a new algorithm A*+BFHS for solving problems with unit-cost operators where A* and IDA* fail due to memory limitations and/or the existence of many distinct paths between the same pair of nodes. A*+BFHS is based on A* and breadth-first heuristic search (BFHS). A*+BFHS combines advantages from both algorithms, namely A*'s node ordering, BFHS's memory savings, and both algorithms' duplicate detection. On easy problems, A*+BFHS behaves the same as A*. On hard problems, it is slower than A* but saves a large amount of memory. Compared to BFIDA*, A*+BFHS reduces the search time and/or memory requirement by several times on a variety of planning domains.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, 1 tabl

    Assessment of household energy utilized for cooking in Ikeja, Lagos state, Nigeria

    Get PDF
    Household cooking energy accounts for a major part of the total energy consumed in Nigeria. Factors affecting the choice of Household energy utilized for cooking and the type preferred in Ikeja area of Lagos state were investigated in this study. Data were obtained through oral interview and administration of structured questionnaire on 250 randomly sampled households in the study area. MATLAB was used to conduct descriptive statistics, inferential statistics and percentage difference between used energy and preference energy. The study revealed that kerosene and Gas (LPG) were mostly used for daily cooking (48.60%) and (36.30%) respectively. Only a small proportion use Charcoal, firewood and electricity for their daily cooking, the percentage being 7.10%, 5.7% and 2.4% for charcoal, firewood and electricity respectively. However preference rating of household energy was highest in Gas followed by electricity, kerosene, charcoal and firewood respectively. Chi-test, linear-by-linear relationship test, likelihood ratio test revealed that level of income, level of education and type of employment affects the choice of fuel used for cooking and the type preferred. http://dx.doi.org/10.4314/njt.v35i4.1

    Loneliness and Risk for Cardiovascular Disease: Mechanisms and Future Directions

    Get PDF
    PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In this review, we synthesise recent research on the association between loneliness and cardiovascular disease (CVD). We present evidence for mechanisms underlying this association and propose directions for future research. RECENT FINDINGS: Loneliness is related to increased risk of early mortality and CVD comparable to other well-established risk factors such as obesity or smoking. Loneliness has been linked to higher rates of incident CVD, poorer CVD patient outcomes, and early mortality from CVD. Loneliness likely affects risk for these outcomes via health-related behaviours (e.g. physical inactivity and smoking), biological mechanisms (e.g. inflammation, stress reactivity), and psychological factors (e.g. depression) to indirectly damage health

    Simple and cost-effective spectrophotometric and titrimetric methods for the determination of ciprofloxacin in tablets

    Get PDF
    Ciprofloxacin is a synthetic chemotherapeutic agent used in the treatment of infections caused by gram negative and gram positive bacteria. Due to its versatility in anti-bacterial chemotherapy, this study sets out toprovide simple, in-expensive and sensitive analytical techniques involving UV-spectrophotometric and titrimetric methods. Method validation was by means of a precision assay. The methods were applied to thedetermination of ciprofloxacin hydrochloride in tablets available within the Nigerian drug distribution system. Ten different brands of ciprofloxacin tablets were analysed for ciprofloxacin by UV spectrophotometry at theëmax of 271.5 nm and redox titration using KMnO4 in alkaline medium. The spectrophotometric results, expressed as a percentage of stated amounts of ciprofloxacin were 95.5 - 103.5%w/w, while the titrimetric results were 95.0 - 100.3%w/w. Some 70% of the results from the two methods were in line with the high performance liquid chromatographic method specified by BP 2008. The results show that both the spectrophotometric and titrimetric methods described are suitable for the assay of ciprofloxacin in tablets

    Thermodynamic conditions during growth determine the magnetic anisotropy in epitaxial thin-films of La0.7_{0.7}Sr0.3_{0.3}MnO3_{3}

    The suitability of a particular material for use in magnetic devices is determined by the process of magnetization reversal/relaxation, which in turn depends on the magnetic anisotropy. Therefore, designing new ways to control magnetic anisotropy in technologically important materials is highly desirable. Here we show that magnetic anisotropy of epitaxial thin-films of half-metallic ferromagnet La0.7_{0.7}Sr0.3_{0.3}MnO3_{3} (LSMO) is determined by the proximity to thermodynamic equilibrium conditions during growth. We performed a series of X-ray diffraction and ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) experiments in two different sets of samples: the first corresponds to LSMO thin-films deposited under tensile strain on (001) SrTiO3_{3} by Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD; far from thermodynamic equilibrium); the second were deposited by a slow Chemical Solution Deposition (CSD) method, under quasi-equilibrium conditions. Thin films prepared by PLD show a in-plane cubic anisotropy with an overimposed uniaxial term. A large anisotropy constant perpendicular to the film plane was also observed in these films. However, the uniaxial anisotropy is completely suppressed in the CSD films. The out of plane anisotropy is also reduced, resulting in a much stronger in plane cubic anisotropy in the chemically synthesized films. This change is due to a different rotation pattern of MnO6_{6} octahedra to accomodate epitaxial strain, which depends not only on the amount of tensile stress imposed by the STO substrate, but also on the growth conditions. Our results demonstrate that the nature and magnitude of the magnetic anisotropy in LSMO can be tuned by the thermodynamic parameters during thin-film deposition.Comment: 6 pages, 8 Figure

    Zoom in on neurodegeneration

    Get PDF
    Despite the existence of several scientific journals that publish research papers and reviews related to neurodegenerative diseases, a journal specifically devoted to the molecular and cellular aspects of disease mechanisms is lacking. Molecular Neurodegeneration is an open-access, peer-reviewed, online journal created to publish original research articles that address i) the mechanisms of neurodegeneration at the cellular, subcellular and molecular levels and ii) potential therapeutic interventions for neurodegenerative diseases. Through publication of reviews, editorial commentaries, and meeting reports, Molecular Neurodegeneration will also provide a forum to enhance the exchange of ideas and promote debate that is essential for scientific progress. Molecular Neurodegeneration will enable scientists to rapidly communicate their important research discoveries to their colleagues around the world
