    Space debris characterization in support of a satellite breakup model

    The Space Kinetic Impact and Debris Branch began an ambitious program to construct a fully analytical model of the breakup of a satellite under hypervelocity impact. In order to provide empirical data with which to substantiate the model, debris from hypervelocity experiments conducted in a controlled laboratory environment were characterized to provide information of its mass, velocity, and ballistic coefficient distributions. Data on the debris were collected in one master data file, and a simple FORTRAN program allows users to describe the debris from any subset of these experiments that may be of interest to them. A statistical analysis was performed, allowing users to determine the precision of the velocity measurements for the data. Attempts are being made to include and correlate other laboratory data, as well as those data obtained from the explosion or collision of spacecraft in low earth orbit

    Thirty years ago, China began implementing a series of reforms to improve efficiency in agricultural production. These, and subsequent, reforms reshaped China’s position in the world economy. China’s rapid economic development and transformation from a planned to a market-oriented economy, however, has reached a stage where further efficiency gains in agricultural production will likely hinge on the development of modern market-supporting institutions. The development of market-supporting institutions in China will bring about long-term and sustainable benefits to producers and consumers in China and the global agricultural economy.     Tapered Double Cantilever Beam Fracture Tests of Phenolic-Wood Adhesive Joints: Part II. Effects of Surface Roughness, the Nature of Surface Roughness, and Surface Aging on Joint Fracture Energy

    Tapered double cantilever beam specimens were used to test the effect of surface roughness, the nature of surface roughness, and surface aging on the fracture energy of phenolic-wood adhesive joints. The fracture energy and the failure characteristics of the joints were found to depend not only on the surface roughness but also on the method of surface preparation. The fracture energy increased monotonically with surface roughness for specimens derived from hand-sanded surfaces but exhibited a minimum for specimens obtained from machine-sanded surfaces. Generally, joints from hand-sanded surfaces had higher fracture energies than those derived from the machine-sanded surfaces. Within the joints derived from the machine-sanded surfaces, those sanded perpendicular to the direction of crack growth had higher fracture energies than those sanded parallel to the direction of crack growth. Aging surfaces prior to bonding significantly decreased adhesive joint strength.Notwithstanding the differences in roughness, microscopic examination revealed little difference in the appearance of the sanded surfaces. Adhesive did not penetrate hand-sanded surfaces to any appreciable extent, but did deeply penetrate both the vessel and fiber lumens on the machine-sanded surfaces. Microscopic examination of the fractured surfaces did reveal significant differences that related to the fracture toughness of the bond

    Catatonia Associated with Initiating Paliperidone Treatment

    We present a case of catatonia, which occurred shortly after starting a new antipsychotic, paliperidone, an active metabolite of risperidone. Catatonia may be caused by a variety of conditions, including metabolic, neurologic, psychiatric and toxic processes. Interestingly, risperidone, which has been thought to cause several cases of catatonia, has also been recommended as a potential treatment. We discuss potential mechanisms for causes of drug-induced catatonia as well as potential treatment options

    Fuel price elasticities for single-unit truck operations in the United States

    This paper provides fuel price elasticity estimates for single-unit truck activity, where single-unit trucks are defined as vehicles on a single frame with either (1) at least two axles and six tires; or (2) a gross vehicle weight greater than 10,000 lb. Using data from 1980 to 2012, this paper applies first-difference and error correction models and finds that single-unit truck activity is sensitive to certain macroeconomic and infrastructure factors (gross domestic product, lane miles expansion, and housing construction), but is not sensitive to diesel fuel prices. These results suggest that fuel price elasticities of single unit truck activity are inelastic. These results may be used by policymakers in considering policies that have a direct impact on fuel prices, or policies whose effects may be equivalent to fuel price adjustments

    Fuel price elasticities in the U.S. combination trucking sector

    This paper estimates fuel price elasticities of combination trucking operations in the United States between 1970 and 2012. We evaluate trucking operations in terms of vehicle miles traveled and fuel consumption for combination trucks. Our explanatory variables include measures of economic activity, energy prices, and indicator variables that account for important regulatory shifts and changes in data collection and reporting in national transportation datasets. Our results suggest that fuel price elasticities in the United States’ trucking sector have shifted from an elastic environment in the 1970s to a relatively inelastic environment today. We discuss the importance of these results for policymakers in light of new policies that aim to limit energy consumption and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from heavy-duty vehicles

    Light Reading: Optimizing Reader/Writer Locking for Read-Dominant Real-Time Workloads (Artifact)

    This paper is directed at reader/writer locking for read-dominant real-time workloads. It is shown that state-of-the-art real-time reader/writer locking protocols are subject to performance limitations when reads dominate, and that existing schedulability analysis fails to leverage the sparsity of writes in this case. A new reader/writer locking-protocol implementation and new inflation-free schedulability analysis are proposed to address these problems. Overhead evaluations of the new implementation show a decrease in overheads of up to 70% over previous implementations, leading to throughput for read operations increasing by up to 450%. Schedulability experiments are presented that show that the analysis results in schedulability improvements of up to 156.8% compared to the existing state-of-the-art approach

    Low-density series expansions for directed percolation I: A new efficient algorithm with applications to the square lattice

    A new algorithm for the derivation of low-density series for percolation on directed lattices is introduced and applied to the square lattice bond and site problems. Numerical evidence shows that the computational complexity grows exponentially, but with a growth factor \lambda < \protect{\sqrt[8]{2}}, which is much smaller than the growth factor \lambda = \protect{\sqrt[4]{2}} of the previous best algorithm. For bond (site) percolation on the directed square lattice the series has been extended to order 171 (158).     Generalized r-Modes of the Maclaurin Spheroids

    Analytical solutions are presented for a class of generalized r-modes of rigidly rotating uniform density stars---the Maclaurin spheroids---with arbitrary values of the angular velocity. Our analysis is based on the work of Bryan; however, we derive the solutions using slightly different coordinates that give purely real representations of the r-modes. The class of generalized r-modes is much larger than the previously studied `classical' r-modes. In particular, for each l and m we find l-m (or l-1 for the m=0 case) distinct r-modes. Many of these previously unstudied r-modes (about 30% of those examined) are subject to a secular instability driven by gravitational radiation. The eigenfunctions of the `classical' r-modes, the l=m+1 case here, are found to have particularly simple analytical representations.     Coagulation factor VIIa binds to herpes simplex virus 1‐encoded glycoprotein C forming a factor X‐enhanced tenase complex oriented on membranes

    BackgroundThe cell membrane‐derived initiators of coagulation, tissue factor (TF) and anionic phospholipid (aPL), are constitutive on the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1) surface, bypassing physiological regulation. TF and aPL accelerate proteolytic activation of factor (F) X to FXa by FVIIa to induce clot formation and cell signaling. Thus, infection in vivo is enhanced by virus surface TF. HSV1‐encoded glycoprotein C (gC) is implicated in this tenase activity by providing viral FX binding sites and increasing FVIIa function in solution.ObjectiveTo examine the biochemical influences of gC on FVIIa‐dependent FX activation.MethodsImmunogold electron microscopy (IEM), kinetic chromogenic assays and microscale thermophoresis were used to dissect tenase biochemistry. Recombinant TF and gC were solubilized (s) by substituting the transmembrane domain with poly‐histidine, which could be orientated on synthetic unilamellar vesicles containing Ni‐chelating lipid (Ni‐aPL). These constructs were compared to purified HSV1 TF±/gC ± variants.ResultsIEM confirmed that gC, TF, and aPL are simultaneously expressed on a single HSV1 particle where the contribution of gC to tenase activity required the availability of viral TF. Unlike viral tenase activity, the cofactor effects of sTF and sgC on FVIIa was additive when bound to Ni‐aPL. FVIIa was found to bind to sgC and this was enhanced by FX.
