    Herbst appliance palatally anchored in the treatment of dental Class II malocclusion: a case report

    Introduction: In this case report, we present a Class II malocclusion correction using only an Herbst appliance palatally anchored with miniscrews. Case presentation: 11.9-year-old female presented with the chief complaints of increased anterior upper teeth proclination; permanent dentition with a Class II division I malocclusion; before sagittal correction with Herbst appliance, we applied a palatal screw to obtain maxillary expansion. The device was removed after 12 months of treatment. Conclusion: This clinical case showed a simple orthopedic and dentoalveolar approach using skeletal anchorage, which can effectively correct a dental Class II malocclusion and frontal proclination of the upper incisors

    Multimodal Imaging of Macular Telangiectasia Type 2: Focus on Vascular Changes Using Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography

    PURPOSE. To report morphologic features of idiopathic macular telangiectasia (MacTel) type 2 by means of optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) and to compare these findings to fundus fluorescein angiography (FFA), fundus autofluorescence (FAF), confocal blue reflectance (CBR), and spectral-domain OCT (SD-OCT). In addition, foveal vessel density and parafoveal vascular density (PFVD), and foveal retinal thickness and parafoveal retinal thickness (PFRT) were compared between MacTel 2 patients and normal aged-matched controls. METHODS. Eight patients (15 eyes) with MacTel 2 and 17 normal controls (17 eyes) underwent retinal multimodal imaging assessment and grading. Results from different imaging techniques were used to compare interimaging modalities. Objective quantification of retinal vessel density and macular thickness was evaluated in MacTel 2 patients (15 eyes). RESULTS. In MacTel 2 eyes a comparison of OCTA to the other imaging techniques showed that the strongest correlations were present with SD-OCT, early FFA, and late FFA. Moderate correlations were found between OCTA and CBR and FAF. Foveal vessel density was significantly lower in MacTel 2 eyes than control eyes both in the superficial plexus (23.74% vs. 33.14%; P = 0.003) and in the deep plexus (24.63% vs. 34.21%; P = 0.005). Superficial PFVD was significantly different in the two groups (47.06% vs. 51.40%; P = 0.005) but not the deep PFVD. Foveal retinal thickness was 214.13 mu m in MacTel 2 eyes and 258.18 mu m in normal controls, and PFRT was 279.60 and 323.29 mu m, respectively (P CONCLUSIONS. Optical coherence tomography angiography is useful for retinal vasculature characterization in MacTel type 2 patients and showed a high correlation with well-established imaging techniques

    Band-3 protein function in human erythrocytes: effect of oxygenation–deoxygenation

    AbstractSulfate transport by band-3 protein in adult human erythrocytes was shown to be modulated by oxygen pressure. In particular, a higher transport activity was measured under high oxygen pressure than at low one (0.0242±0.0073 vs. 0.0074±0.0010 min−1). Other factors, such as magnesium ions and orthovanadate, which can indirectly affect the binding properties of the cytoplasmic domain of band 3 (cdb3), influence significantly the anion exchanger activity. No effect of oxygen pressure on sulfate transport was found in chicken erythrocytes, which may be related to their lacking the cdb3 binding site. These findings are fully consistent with a molecular mechanism where the oxygen-linked transition of hemoglobin (T→R) could play a key role in the regulation of anion exchanger activity

    ITASAT-2: ConOps Review and Near-Term Challenges

    ITASAT-2 is a Brazil-United States mission to study ionospheric phenomena that occur in low orbit and to develop and demonstrate capabilities in geolocation. Brazil will be responsible for the spacecraft development, integration and testing of the CubeSat and the US partners will provide the space weather payloads. The geolocation payload and radiation measurement instrument is intended to be provided by Brazil partners. To be able to accommodate the expected payloads and the required subsystems a 12 U CubeSat is foreseen. This works presents the ongoing work of ITASAT-2 mission covering the Concept of Operation and expected challenges identified for mission development, maneuvers and propulsion, commissioning and operations. The intended partners for the mission are NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, Utah State University, University of Texas at Dallas, Aerospace Corporation, Brazilian Universities and institutes

    TWNK in Parkinson's Disease: A Movement Disorder and Mitochondrial Disease Center Perspective Study

    Background: Parkinsonian features have been described in patients harboring variants in nuclear genes encoding for proteins involved in mitochondrial DNA maintenance, such as TWNK. Objectives: The aim was to screen for TWNK variants in an Italian cohort of Parkinson's disease (PD) patients and to assess the occurrence of parkinsonism in patients presenting with TWNK-related autosomal dominant progressive external ophthalmoplegia (TWNK-adPEO). Methods: Genomic DNA of 263 consecutively collected PD patients who underwent diagnostic genetic testing was analyzed with a targeted custom gene panel including TWNK, as well as genes causative of monogenic PD. Genetic and clinical data of 18 TWNK-adPEO patients with parkinsonism were retrospectively analyzed. Results: Six of 263 PD patients (2%), presenting either with isolated PD (n = 4) or in combination with bilateral ptosis (n = 2), carried TWNK likely pathogenic variants. Among 18 TWNK-adPEO patients, 5 (28%) had parkinsonism. Conclusions: We show candidate TWNK variants occurring in PD without PEO.     Fruitomics: The importance of combining sensory and chemical analyses in assessing cold storage responses of six peach (Prunus persica L. Batsch) cultivars

    Cold storage is used to extend peach commercial life, but can affect quality. Quality changes are assessed through the content of nutritionally relevant compounds, aroma, physical characters and/or sensorially. Here, six peach and nectarine cultivars were sampled at commercial harvest and after 7 days of 1 °C storage. A trained panel was used to evaluate sensorial characters, while carotenoids, phenolics, vitamin C, total sugars, and qualitative traits including firmness, titrable acidity and soluble solid content were integrated with volatile organic compound (VOC) analysis previously reported. The different analyses reveal interesting patterns of correlation, and the six cultivars responded differently to cold storage. Sensory parameters were correlated with 64 VOCs and seven intrinsic characters. Acidity, firmness, and 10 VOCs were strongly negatively correlated with harmony and sweetness, but positively correlated with bitterness, astringency, and crunchiness. In contrast, Brix, b-carotene, and six VOCs were positively correlated with harmony and sweetness

    Evidence for the associated production of a single top quark and a photon in proton-proton collisions at s=\sqrt{s}= 13 TeV

    The first evidence of events consistent with the production of a single top quark in association with a photon is reported. The analysis is based on proton-proton collisions at s=13  TeV and recorded by the CMS experiment in 2016, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9  fb-1. Events are selected by requiring the presence of a muon (μ), a photon (γ), an imbalance in transverse momentum from an undetected neutrino (ν), and at least two jets (j) of which exactly one is identified as associated with the hadronization of a b quark. A multivariate discriminant based on topological and kinematic event properties is employed to separate signal from background processes. An excess above the background-only hypothesis is observed, with a significance of 4.4 standard deviations. A fiducial cross section is measured for isolated photons with transverse momentum greater than 25 GeV in the central region of the detector. The measured product of the cross section and branching fraction is σ(pp→tγj)B(t→μνb)=115±17(stat)±30(syst)  fb, which is consistent with the standard model prediction.Peer Reviewe

    Combined search for electroweak production of charginos and neutralinos in proton-proton collisions at s=\sqrt{s} = 13 TeV

    A statistical combination of several searches for the electroweak production of charginos and neutralinos is presented. All searches use proton-proton collision data at s=13 \sqrt{s}=13 TeV, recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2016 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb1^{−1}. In addition to the combination of previous searches, a targeted analysis requiring three or more charged leptons (electrons or muons) is presented, focusing on the challenging scenario in which the difference in mass between the two least massive neutralinos is approximately equal to the mass of the Z boson. The results are interpreted in simplified models of chargino-neutralino or neutralino pair production. For chargino-neutralino production, in the case when the lightest neutralino is massless, the combination yields an observed (expected) limit at the 95% confidence level on the chargino mass of up to 650 (570) GeV, improving upon the individual analysis limits by up to 40 GeV. If the mass difference between the two least massive neutralinos is approximately equal to the mass of the Z boson in the chargino-neutralino model, the targeted search requiring three or more leptons obtains observed and expected exclusion limits of around 225 GeV on the second neutralino mass and 125 GeV on the lightest neutralino mass, improving the observed limit by about 60 GeV in both masses compared to the previous CMS result. In the neutralino pair production model, the combined observed (expected) exclusion limit on the neutralino mass extends up to 650–750 (550–750) GeV, depending on the branching fraction assumed. This extends the observed exclusion achieved in the individual analyses by up to 200 GeV. The combined result additionally excludes some intermediate gaps in the mass coverage of the individual analyses.Peer Reviewe

    Search for pair production of excited top quarks in the lepton + jets final state

    A search is performed for the pair production of spin-3/2 excited top quarks, each decaying to a top quark and a gluon. The search uses the data collected with the CMS detector from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 inverse femtobarns. Events are selected by requiring an isolated muon or electron, an imbalance in the transverse momentum, and at least six jets of which exactly two must be compatible with originating from the fragmentation of a bottom quark. No significant excess over the standard model predictions is found. A lower limit of 1.2 TeV is set at 95% confidence level on the mass of the spin-3/2 excited top quark in an extension of the Randall-Sundrum model, assuming a 100% branching fraction of its decay into a top quark and a gluon. These are the best limits to date in a search for excited top quarks and the first at 13 TeV.Peer Reviewe
