The Interplay between Educational Achievement, Occupational Success, and Well-Being

    Get PDF
Many studies have examined the effect of life events, education, and income on well-being. Conversely, research concerning well-being as a predictor of life course outcomes is sparse. Diener's suggestion "to inquire about the effects of well-being on future behavior and success” has, with some exceptions, not yet come to fruition. This article contributes to this body of research. We conceptualize and analyze the interplay between educational achievement, occupational success, and well-being as a complex process. The relationship between these domains is examined drawing on a structure-agency framework derived from Bourdieu and Social Comparison Theory. Social comparison between adolescents and their parents is suggested to be the mechanism explaining the effects of successful and unsuccessful intergenerational transmission of educational achievement and occupational success on well-being. It is further argued that well-being may serve as an individual resource by fostering educational and occupational outcomes. Panel data from the Transition from Education to Employment (TREE) project, a Swiss PISA 2000 follow-up study, was used. The interplay between well-being and successful and unsuccessful intergenerational transfer of educational attainment was analyzed in an autoregressive cross-lagged mixture model framework. Social comparison was found to be related to well-being, while well-being proved to significantly increase the probability of successful intergenerational transfer of educational attainmen

Vacuum insulation panels (VIP) in refrigerator room, freezing room & fridge

    Get PDF
With respect to the continuous trend of reduction in energy consumption vacuum insulation panels (VIP) find an increasing application in freezing and cold storage rooms of supermarkets as well as in refrigerators. This implies the investigation of VIP behaviour subject to conditions different from those encountered in building application. The present contribution deals with the evolution of the internal pressure of VIPs subjected to low and freezing temperature for a period of 5 years confirming the prediction made earlier on its linear increase 0.6 mbar/year in the refrigerator room and 0.10 to 0.26 mbar/year in freezer room depending on the VIP type. This is a clear indication that the aging process decelerates compared to the standard test condition of VIP due to the low temperature condition.Further, a refrigerator with different VIP configuration was analysed with respect to their energy performance by means of thermal bridge analysis and possibilities to reduce them

Solid Waste Resource Recovery Alternatives, U.S. Facility, Subic Bay, Philippines

The U.S. Navy Public Works Center, Subic Bay, Republic of the Philippines (PWC Subic Bay) is responsible for the collection and disposal of almost 300,000 yd3 of solid waste annually. A portion of this solid waste is manually sorted and recycled, resulting in gross revenues of over $200,000 in FY82. The present manual sorting and recycling system is considered by PWC Subic Bay to be inadequate in terms of sanitation, safety, and recyclable materials recovery. Therefore , PWC Subic Bay requested that the Naval Civil Engineering Laboratory (NCEL) study the system and recommend improvements

Classical simulation of entanglement swapping with bounded communication

    Get PDF
Entanglement appears under two different forms in quantum theory, namely as a property of states of joint systems and as a property of measurement eigenstates in joint measurements. By combining these two aspects of entanglement, it is possible to generate nonlocality between particles that never interacted, using the protocol of entanglement swapping. We show that even in the more constraining bilocal scenario where distant sources of particles are assumed to be independent, i.e. to share no prior randomness, this process can be simulated classically with bounded communication, using only 9 bits in total. Our result thus provides an upper bound on the nonlocality of the process of entanglement swapping.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figur

Preparation of nano-gypsum from anhydrite nanoparticles: Strongly increased Vickers hardness and formation of calcium sulfate nano-needles

    Get PDF
The preparation of calcium sulfate by flame synthesis resulted in the continuous production of anhydrite nanoparticles of 20-50nm size. After compaction and hardening by the addition of water, the anhydrite nanoparticles reacted to nano-gypsum which was confirmed by X-ray diffraction, diffuse reflectance IR spectroscopy and thermal analysis. Mechanical properties were investigated in terms of Vickers hardness and revealed an up to three times higher hardness of nano-gypsum if compared to conventional micron-sized construction material. The improved mechanical properties of nano-gypsum could in part be due to the presence of calcium sulfate nano-needles in the nano-gypsum as showed by electron microscop

Defining synonymous codon compression schemes by genome recoding

    Get PDF
Synthetic recoding of genomes, to remove targeted sense codons, may facilitate the encoded cellular synthesis of unnatural polymers by orthogonal translation systems. However, our limited understanding of allowed synonymous codon substitutions, and the absence of methods that enable the stepwise replacement of the Escherichia coli genome with long synthetic DNA and provide feedback on allowed and disallowed design features in synthetic genomes, have restricted progress towards this goal. Here we endow E. coli with a system for efficient, programmable replacement of genomic DNA with long (>100-kb) synthetic DNA, through the in vivo excision of double-stranded DNA from an episomal replicon by CRISPR/Cas9, coupled to lambda-red-mediated recombination and simultaneous positive and negative selection. We iterate the approach, providing a basis for stepwise whole-genome replacement. We attempt systematic recoding in an essential operon using eight synonymous recoding schemes. Each scheme systematically replaces target codons with defined synonyms and is compatible with codon reassignment. Our results define allowed and disallowed synonymous recoding schemes, and enable the identification and repair of recoding at idiosyncratic positions in the genome

Characterising two-sided quantum correlations beyond entanglement via metric-adjusted f-correlations

We introduce an infinite family of quantifiers of quantum correlations beyond entanglement which vanish on both classical-quantum and quantum-classical states and are in one-to-one correspondence with the metric-adjusted skew informations. The `quantum ff-correlations' are defined as the maximum metric-adjusted ff-correlations between pairs of local observables with the same fixed equispaced spectrum. We show that these quantifiers are entanglement monotones when restricted to pure states of qubit-qudit systems. We also evaluate the quantum ff-correlations in closed form for two-qubit systems and discuss their behaviour under local commutativity preserving channels. We finally provide a physical interpretation for the quantifier corresponding to the average of the Wigner-Yanase-Dyson skew informations.Comment: 20 pages, 1 figure. Published versio

Telemedicine to Support Heart Failure Patients during Social Distancing: A Systematic Review

    Get PDF
Background: Heart failure (HF) has been described as an emerging pandemic as its prevalence continues to rise with a growing and aging population. HF patients are more vulnerable to infections with higher risk of hospitalisation, morbidity, and mortality. During this COVID-19 pandemic, telemedicine has emerged as an alternative to usual out-patient care. This study aimed to systematically review available literature regarding the effect of telemedicine on mortality, health-related quality of life (HR-QoL), and hospitalisation rate of HF patients. Method: A literature search was conducted on five databases (PubMed, Medline, EMBASE, SCOPUS and Cochrane Central Database) up to 21st May 2022. Data from studies that fulfilled the eligibility criteria were collected and extracted. Included studies were critically appraised using suitable tools and extracted data were synthesized qualitatively. Results: A total of 27 studies were included in the qualitative synthesis with a total of 21,006 patients and sufficient level of bias. Reduction in the mortality rate, HF-related hospitalisation rate, and improvement in the HR-QoL were shown in most of the studies, although only some were statistically significant. Conclusions: The use of telemedicine is a promising and beneficial method for HF patients to acquire adequate health care services. Further studies in this field are needed, especially in developing countries and with standardized method, to provide better services and protections for HF patients. Telemonitoring and patient-centred partnership via interactive communication between healthcare team and patients is central to successful telemedicine implementation.
