Evolution of PEKK crystallization measured in laser sintering
This is the final version. Available on open access from Frontiers Media via the DOI in this recordData availability statement:
The original contributions presented in the study are included in the article/Supplementary Material, further inquiries can be directed to the corresponding author. The rising popularity of laser sintering (LS) technology has increased by the broadening of available materials for this process. Kepstan 6002 poly (ether ketone ketone) (PEKK) was recently launched as a high-performance polymer grade with a lower processing temperature and unique crystallization kinetics. This study aims to understand the progress of crystallization on samples manufactured throughout the laser sintering process. These results were compared with isothermal and dynamic differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) experiments with different cooling rates. Kepstan 6002 PEKK processed by high-temperature laser sintering (HT-LS) presents a kinetics of crystallization in the order of âŒ10 times slower than its crystallized samples in the DSC. This result highlights the need for a part-based crystallization investigation rather than isothermal models to describe the crystallization in LS. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis reveals smaller spherulites in the samples subjected to prolonged cooling times and an almost amorphous structure for the PEKK samples exposed to almost no cooling. This experiment identified the surroundings of laser sintered particles as preferential sites for crystallization initiation, which grows as the particles penetrate the molten layers and spherulites are formed. The slower kinetics of crystallization of Kepstan 6002 PEKK grade improve the adhesion between layers in laser sintering and enable tailoring its properties according to the application. Understanding the relationship between intrinsic material characteristics and the resulting final properties is vital to optimizing the process and controlling the final performance of PEKK for different applications.University of ExeterArkema Chemistry Co
The grapevine (Vitis vinifera) LysM receptor kinases VvLYK1-1 and VvLYK1-2 mediate chitooligosaccharide-triggered immunity
Chitin, a major component of fungal cell walls, is a well-known pathogen-associated molecular pattern (PAMP) that triggers defense responses in several mammal and plant species. Here, we show that two chitooligosaccharides, chitin and chitosan, act as PAMPs in grapevine (Vitis vinifera) as they elicit immune signalling events, defense gene expression and resistance against fungal diseases. To identify their cognate receptors, the grapevine family of LysM receptor kinases (LysM-RKs) was annotated and their gene expression profiles were characterized. Phylogenetic analysis clearly distinguished three V. vinifera LysM-RKs (VvLYKs) located in the same clade as the Arabidopsis CHITIN ELICITOR RECEPTOR KINASE1 (AtCERK1), which mediates chitin-induced immune responses. The Arabidopsis mutant Atcerk1, impaired in chitin perception, was transformed with these three putative orthologous genes encoding VvLYK1-1, -2, or -3 to determine if they would complement the loss of AtCERK1 function. Our results provide evidence that VvLYK1-1 and VvLYK1-2, but not VvLYK1-3, functionally complement the Atcerk1 mutant by restoring chitooligosaccharide-induced MAPK activation and immune gene expression. Moreover, expression of VvLYK1-1 in Atcerk1 restored penetration resistance to the non-adapted grapevine powdery mildew (Erysiphe necator). On the whole, our results indicate that the grapevine VvLYK1-1 and VvLYK1-2 participate in chitin- and chitosan-triggered immunity and that VvLYK1-1 plays an important role in basal resistance against E. necator
Functional outcomes in adult patients with herpes simplex encephalitis admitted to the ICU: a multicenter cohort study
PURPOSE: We aimed to study the association of body temperature and other admission factors with outcomes of herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE) adult patients requiring ICU admission.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective multicenter study on patients diagnosed with HSE in 47 ICUs in France, between 2007 and 2017. Fever was defined as a body temperature higher or equal to 38.3 °C. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors associated with poor outcome at 90 days, defined by a score of 3-6 (indicating moderate-to-severe disability or death) on the modified Rankin scale.
RESULTS: Overall, 259 patients with a score on the Glasgow coma scale of 9 (6-12) and a body temperature of 38.7 (38.1-39.2) °C at admission were studied. At 90 days, 185 (71%) patients had a poor outcome, including 44 (17%) deaths. After adjusting for age, fever (ORâ=â2.21; 95% CI 1.18-4.16), mechanical ventilation (ORâ=â2.21; 95% CI 1.21-4.03), and MRI brain lesionsâ>â3 lobes (ORâ=â3.04; 95% CI 1.35-6.81) were independently associated with poor outcome. By contrast, a direct ICU admission, as compared to initial admission to the hospital wards (i.e., indirect ICU admission), was protective (ORâ=â0.52; 95% CI 0.28-0.95). Sensitivity analyses performed after adjustment for functional status before admission and reason for ICU admission yielded similar results.
CONCLUSIONS: In HSE adult patients requiring ICU admission, several admission factors are associated with an increased risk of poor functional outcome. The identification of potentially modifiable factors, namely, elevated admission body temperature and indirect ICU admission, provides an opportunity for testing further intervention strategies
Exploiting the genetic diversity of maize using a combined metabolomic, enzyme activity profiling, and metabolic modelling approach to link leaf physiology to kernel yield
A combined metabolomic, biochemical, fluxomic, and metabolic modeling approach was developed using 19 genetically distant maize (Zea mays) lines from Europe and America. Considerable differences were detected between the lines when leaf metabolic profiles and activities of the main enzymes involved in primary metabolism were compared. During grain filling, the leaf metabolic composition appeared to be a reliable marker, allowing a classification matching the genetic diversity of the lines. During the same period, there was a significant correlation between the genetic distance of the lines and the activities of enzymes involved in carbon metabolism, notably glycolysis. Although large differences were observed in terms of leaf metabolic fluxes, these variations were not tightly linked to the genome structure of the lines. Both correlation studies and metabolic network analyses allowed the description of a maize ideotype with a high grain yield potential. Such an ideotype is characterized by low accumulation of soluble amino acids and carbohydrates in the leaves and high activity of enzymes involved in the C4 photosynthetic pathway and in the biosynthesis of amino acids derived from glutamate. Chlorogenates appear to be important markers that can be used to select for maize lines that produce larger kernels
Measures of happiness: Which to choose?
Happiness is defined as the subjective enjoyment of oneâs life as a whole, also
called âlife-satisfaction.â Two components of happiness are distinguished; an affective
component (how well one feels most of the time) and a cognitive component (the degree to
which one perceived to get what one wants from life). In this chapter, I present an overview
of valid measures of these concepts, drawing on the âCollection of Happiness Measuresâ of
the âWorld Database of Happinessâ. To date (2016), this collection includes more than twothousand
measures of happiness, mostly single direct questions. Links in this text lead to
detail about these measures and the studies in this chapter, I describe the differences and
discuss their strengths and weaknesse

Mechanical Performance of Laser Sintered Poly(ether Ketone Ketone) (PEKK)
The recent progress in Additive Manufacturing Powder Bed Fusion systems are bound
to attract uptake of new high performance materials. Within the Poly(aryl ether ketone)
(PAEK) family, Poly(ether ketone ketone) (PEKK) shows promising mechanical properties, comparable with the commercial laser sintering grade PEK HP3, whilst processed at
significantly lower temperatures. Kepstan 6002 PEKK specimens were laser sintered in
multiple orientations and a range of mechanical tests were used to assess overall performance. PEKK showed outstanding ultimate tensile strength ranging between 75 and 90
MPa in x-y direction whilst maintaining an elongation at break of 2.6%. Further investigation of the fracture showed localized plastic regions attributed to a better performance.
The same plastic behaviour is observed during compression, in which PEKK showed remarkable deformation with no signs of breaking. The combination of properties offered
by Kepstan PEKK parts manufactured at a lower processing temperature makes it a very
attractive polymer for applications in the aerospace and automotive sectors.Mechanical Engineerin
