Electronic structure and optical properties of Sn and SnGe quantum dots
Self-assembled quantum dots in a Si–Ge–Sn system attract research attention as possible direct band gap materials, compatible with Si-based technology, with potential applications in optoelectronics. In this work, the electronic structure near the point and interband optical matrix elements of strained Sn and SnGe quantum dots in a Si or Ge matrix are calculated using the eight-band k·p method, and the competing L-valley conduction band states were found by the effective mass method. The strain distribution in the dots was found with the continuum mechanical model. The parameters required for the k·p or effective mass calculation for Sn were extracted by fitting to the energy band structure calculated by the nonlocal empirical pseudopotential method. The calculations show that the self-assembled Sn/Si dots, sized between 4 and 12 nm, have indirect interband transition energies between 0.8 and 0.4 eV and direct interband transitions between 2.5 and 2.0 eV. In particular, the actually grown, approximately cylindrical Sn dots in Si with a diameter and height of about 5 nm are calculated to have an indirect transition (to the L valley) of about 0.7 eV, which agrees very well with experimental results. Similar good agreement with the experiment was also found for SnGe dots grown on Si. However, neither of these is predicted to be direct band gap materials, in contrast to some earlier expectations
Investigation of carrier confinement in direct bandgap GeSn/SiGeSn 2D and 0D heterostructures
Since the first demonstration of lasing in direct bandgap GeSn semiconductors, the research efforts for the realization of electrically pumped group IV lasers monolithically integrated on Si have significantly intensified. This led to epitaxial studies of GeSn/SiGeSn hetero- and nanostructures, where charge carrier confinement strongly improves the radiative emission properties. Based on recent experimental literature data, in this report we discuss the advantages of GeSn/SiGeSn multi quantum well and quantum dot structures, aiming to propose a roadmap for group IV epitaxy. Calculations based on 8-band k∙p and effective mass method have been performed to determine band discontinuities, the energy difference between Γ- and L-valley conduction band edges, and optical properties such as material gain and optical cross section. The effects of these parameters are systematically analyzed for an experimentally achievable range of Sn (10 to 20 at.%) and Si (1 to 10 at.%) contents, as well as strain values (−1 to 1%). We show that charge carriers can be efficiently confined in the active region of optical devices for experimentally acceptable Sn contents in both multi quantum well and quantum dot configurations
Alliances for sustainable farmland management : a case study of the farmland preservation movement and a CSA Initiative in Norway
The global community fails to manage farmland the way it demands for and
consequently faces major challenges loss of farmland as a result of urban expansion.
This is also the case in Norway. While the topic of farmland preservation has received
attention in the political debate, several politicians and multiple grassroots organizations
are dissatisfied with the current state of farmland preservation. Politicians in opposition
to the government are accompanied by farmer unions, environmental organizations,
and farmland preservation alliances in the demand for better farmland preservation. In
parallel to this, there is a growing trend of alternative food networks throughout Norway.
This study investigates four organizations, three political associations active in the
farmland preservation movement, and a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)
initiative, with the aim to generate more knowledge about how grassroots actors can
function as knowledge bearers and agents of change in the political sphere affecting
farmland preservation and farmland management. The main research question is: How
can farmland preservation movements and alternative food networks contribute to build
alliances between actors involved in farmland management? The results provide
contextual knowledge about the situation of farmland preservation and management in
a municipality in the central part of Eastern Norway. Through the perspectives of four
actors who engage in preserving farmland in the case area, this study presents valuable
information about how grassroots actors can function as knowledge bearers and agents
of change in the political sphere affecting farmland preservation and farmland
management.M-A
Venture capital time-to-exit : an empirical study of Norwegian venture capital divestments and holding periods
Using a dataset comprising of 505 venture capital deals conducted in Norway between 1993 and 2012, this thesis examines the rate of successfully divesting portfolio companies and the corresponding holding period. By manually combing through every deal and determining entry date, exit date and exit type, we find the duration for a majority of the investments. Exit type is then binomially classified as either success or failure based on the category of exit.
The framework of survival analysis is used to estimate the survival functions of the investments and provide unbiased, descriptive statistics on the investments and their time-to-event, categorized as any successful exit. A competing risks analysis examines the effects of a number of covariates in terms of investment sector, fund type and investment stage.
The analyses find significant differences between corporate venture capital funds and independent venture capital funds, with the corporate funds showing a tendency to hold their investments for a longer time span and having fewer successful exits. We further find a significantly lower incidence of successful exit among investments done at the seed stage and investments done in companies operating in the cleantech-sector.
The results are tested by conducting a logistic regression. When including fixed fund effects, we find the statistical significance to deteriorate in some of the findings, but the general conclusions do not change.
The findings have interesting implications for both investors and entrepreneurs in the venture landscape, and could provide a platform from which further research is conducted.nhhma
