    Surface Flow Measurements in the Ballona Wetlands Freshwater Marsh

    The Ballona Wetlands Freshwater Marsh is a 26-acre constructed wetland located in coastal Los Angeles, CA. The Marsh serves an important ecological function of capturing and filtering runoff from the surrounding urbanized area before it enters the Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve. Mosquito populations in the Marsh are monitored by Los Angeles County Vector Control to prevent public health risks. Knowledge of the areas in the Marsh with the least water movement, an indication of the highest probability of mosquito breeding, may help to maximize the efficiency with which the control is being exercised. Additionally, knowledge of the marsh hydrology will assist in further research done in the area. To address this need, the study used flotation devices and GPS tracking units to collect information on surface water velocity and an electronic temperature gauge to measure water temperature in the Ballona Wetlands Freshwater Marsh. The velocity measurements of the water at different points in the Marsh were combined to create a vector field layer edover a satellite map of the marsh to clearly show where water flow is fastest and slowest. This map can facilitate further examination of mosquito concentrations in the Marsh, as well as improve the knowledge of the Marsh’s hydrological characteristics. This research on surface flow is a crucial first step in establishing the entire Ballona Fresh water Marsh Ecosystem Monitoring Program, and the collected data will be useful for a variety of purposes.https://digitalcommons.lmu.edu/cures_posters/1035/thumbnail.jp

    The Value of Urban Parklands: A User Study of the Baldwin Hills

    EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This report provides the results of a two-year research study by the Loyola Marymount University Center for Urban Resilience (CURes) to examine park visitation and user behavior and attitudes in the Baldwin Hills Parklands. Supported by the Baldwin Hill Conservancy through California Proposition 84 funding, the goal of this study was to better understand how individuals are using and interacting with the Baldwin Hills Parklands. It is the first large-scale, multi-year, field-based attendance survey and multifaceted analysis of visitors’ experiences in the Parklands, consisting of a pilot and four comprehensive field seasons. Building on a pilot phase in 2014, 38 CURes research assistants spent 1,934 hours in the parks over four field seasons from 2015-2017. Researchers conducted 1,747 park user surveys, completed counts of 12,709 parks visitors, analyzed 4,998 images from park entrances, and produced reports and outreach materials. The results show that the Baldwin Hills Parklands: receive high levels of visitation, especially on weekends, with the Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area serving the largest user population at any one time, and the Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook State Park having the highest visitation on average; have a devoted population of frequent users that tend to visit only one park within the Baldwin Hills Parklands; are visited by people who are highly civically engaged, have a moderate understanding of the local environment, and are very interested in learning more about the environment of the region; are visited by users mostly arriving by car who tend to enter through main park entrances, with no trouble finding parking; receive a substantial number of visitors who would prefer to arrive by foot or bicycle, and even more who would be interested in taking the park shuttle but were not aware of it; support both active recreation and passive enjoyment of nature, with walking and enjoying nature as the top two activities indicated by users; are visited by users who do not often go to the coast, though nearly all indicate a willingness to walk or bike on a recreational trail to visit the beach; serve a diverse population of users from Los Angeles County that are, on average, relatively young, highly educated, and of low to moderate income, which is not entirely consistent with the surrounding population; and receive visitors with highly positive sentiments and attachments to the parks. These findings suggest that the Baldwin Hills Parklands are an integral natural resource in the Los Angeles region. They also provide a foundation to guide continued work to better understand, improve, and promote the use of the parklands.     To investigate potential cardiovascular and other effects of long-term pharmacological interleukin 1 (IL-1) inhibition, we studied genetic variants that produce inhibition of IL-1, a master regulator of inflammation. Methods: We created a genetic score combining the effects of alleles of two common variants (rs6743376 and rs1542176) that are located upstream of IL1RN, the gene encoding the IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra; an endogenous inhibitor of both IL-1α and IL-1β); both alleles increase soluble IL-1Ra protein concentration. We compared effects on inflammation biomarkers of this genetic score with those of anakinra, the recombinant form of IL-1Ra, which has previously been studied in randomised trials of rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory disorders. In primary analyses, we investigated the score in relation to rheumatoid arthritis and four cardiometabolic diseases (type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, ischaemic stroke, and abdominal aortic aneurysm; 453 411 total participants). In exploratory analyses, we studied the relation of the score to many disease traits and to 24 other disorders of proposed relevance to IL-1 signalling (746 171 total participants). Findings: For each IL1RN minor allele inherited, serum concentrations of IL-1Ra increased by 0·22 SD (95% CI 0·18-0·25; 12·5%; p=9·3 × 10-33), concentrations of interleukin 6 decreased by 0·02 SD (-0·04 to -0·01; -1·7%; p=3·5 × 10-3), and concentrations of C-reactive protein decreased by 0·03 SD (-0·04 to -0·02; -3·4%; p=7·7 × 10-14). We noted the effects of the genetic score on these inflammation biomarkers to be directionally concordant with those of anakinra. The allele count of the genetic score had roughly log-linear, dose-dependent associations with both IL-1Ra concentration and risk of coronary heart disease. For people who carried four IL-1Ra-raising alleles, the odds ratio for coronary heart disease was 1·15 (1·08-1·22; p=1·8 × 10-6) compared with people who carried no IL-1Ra-raising alleles; the per-allele odds ratio for coronary heart disease was 1·03 (1·02-1·04; p=3·9 × 10-10). Per-allele odds ratios were 0·97 (0·95-0·99; p=9·9 × 10-4) for rheumatoid arthritis, 0·99 (0·97-1·01; p=0·47) for type 2 diabetes, 1·00 (0·98-1·02; p=0·92) for ischaemic stroke, and 1·08 (1·04-1·12; p=1·8 × 10-5) for abdominal aortic aneurysm. In exploratory analyses, we observed per-allele increases in concentrations of proatherogenic lipids, including LDL-cholesterol, but no clear evidence of association for blood pressure, glycaemic traits, or any of the 24 other disorders studied. Modelling suggested that the observed increase in LDL-cholesterol could account for about a third of the association observed between the genetic score and increased coronary risk. Interpretation: Human genetic data suggest that long-term dual IL-1α/β inhibition could increase cardiovascular risk and, conversely, reduce the risk of development of rheumatoid arthritis. The cardiovascular risk might, in part, be mediated through an increase in proatherogenic lipid concentrations.     Effects of once-weekly exenatide on cardiovascular outcomes in type 2 diabetes

    BACKGROUND: The cardiovascular effects of adding once-weekly treatment with exenatide to usual care in patients with type 2 diabetes are unknown. METHODS: We randomly assigned patients with type 2 diabetes, with or without previous cardiovascular disease, to receive subcutaneous injections of extended-release exenatide at a dose of 2 mg or matching placebo once weekly. The primary composite outcome was the first occurrence of death from cardiovascular causes, nonfatal myocardial infarction, or nonfatal stroke. The coprimary hypotheses were that exenatide, administered once weekly, would be noninferior to placebo with respect to safety and superior to placebo with respect to efficacy. RESULTS: In all, 14,752 patients (of whom 10,782 [73.1%] had previous cardiovascular disease) were followed for a median of 3.2 years (interquartile range, 2.2 to 4.4). A primary composite outcome event occurred in 839 of 7356 patients (11.4%; 3.7 events per 100 person-years) in the exenatide group and in 905 of 7396 patients (12.2%; 4.0 events per 100 person-years) in the placebo group (hazard ratio, 0.91; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.83 to 1.00), with the intention-to-treat analysis indicating that exenatide, administered once weekly, was noninferior to placebo with respect to safety (P<0.001 for noninferiority) but was not superior to placebo with respect to efficacy (P=0.06 for superiority). The rates of death from cardiovascular causes, fatal or nonfatal myocardial infarction, fatal or nonfatal stroke, hospitalization for heart failure, and hospitalization for acute coronary syndrome, and the incidence of acute pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, medullary thyroid carcinoma, and serious adverse events did not differ significantly between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: Among patients with type 2 diabetes with or without previous cardiovascular disease, the incidence of major adverse cardiovascular events did not differ significantly between patients who received exenatide and those who received placebo

    Placing changes in the microbiome in the context of the American Gut. We accumulated samples over sequencing runs to demonstrate the structural consistency in the data. We demonstrate that while the ICU dataset (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27602409) falls within the American Gut samples, they do not fall close to most samples at any of the body sites. We then highlight samples from the United Kingdom, Australia, the United States and other countries to show that nationality does not overcome the variation in body site. We then highlight the utility of the American Gut in meta-analysis by reproducing results from (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20668239) and (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23861384), using the AGP dataset as the context for dynamic microbiome changes instead of the HMP dataset. We show rapid, complete recovery of C. diff patients following fecal material transplantation and also contextualized the change in an infant gut over time until it settles into an adult state. This demonstrates the power of the American Gut dataset, both as a cohesive study and as a context for other investigations
