Method for compression molding articles from lignocellulosic materials
Flakeboard or particle board panels and other composite articles made from wood flakes or other particulate lignocellulosic materials having a relatively high internal bond and improved resistance to moisture are made from flakes or particles which have a moisture content of at least 15%. A catalyst capable of accelerating the reaction between the flakes or particles, the binder and water is applied to the flakes or particles prior to the addition of a moisture-tolerant particle board binder, such as an organic polyisocyanate. A mat of the resulting furnish is compression shaped under pressure and at a temperature less than 250Ā° F. for a time period sufficient to form a composite article of the desired shape and/or dimensions.https://digitalcommons.mtu.edu/patents/1088/thumbnail.jp
Demographic characteristics of exploited tropical lutjanids: a comparative analysis
Demographic parameters from seven exploited coral reef lutjanid species were compared as a case study of the implications of intrafamily variation in life histories for
multispecies harvest management. Modal lengths varied by 4 cm among four species (Lutjanus fulviflamma, L. vitta, L. carponotatus, L. adetii), which were at least 6 cm smaller than the modal lengths of the largest species (L. gibbus, Symphorus nematophorus, Aprion virescens). Modal ages, indicating ages of full selection to fishing gear, were 10 years or less for all species, but maximum ages ranged from
12 (L. gibbus) to 36 years (S. nematophorus). Each species had a unique growth pattern, with differences in length-at-age and mean asymptotic fork length (Lā), but smaller species generally grew fast during the first 1ā2 years of life and larger species grew more slowly over a longer period. Total mortality rates varied among species; L. gibbus had the highest mortality and L. fulviflamma, the
lowest mortality. The variability in life history strategies of these tropical lutjanids makes generalizations about lutjanid life histories difficult, but the fact that all seven had characteristics that would make them particularly vulnerable to fishing indicates that
harvest of tropical lutjanids should be managed with caution
Economic Potential of Greenhouse Gas Emission Reductions: Comparative Role for Soil Sequestration in Agriculture and Forestry
We use the Agricultural Sector Model to analyze the economic potential of soil carbon sequestration as one of several agricultural greenhouse gas emission mitigation strategies, including afforestation. For low incentives on carbon emission savings, agricultural soil carbon sequestration is the most cost-efficient strategy. As incentive levels increase above $50 per ton of carbon equivalent, afforestation and biofuel production become the key strategies, while the role of soil carbon diminishes. If saturating sinks are discounted based on their net present value, the competitive economic equilibrium among agricultural mitigation strategies shifts away from soil carbon sequestration and afforestation and toward more biofuel production. Regardless of the discounting assumption and the carbon savings incentive level, the economic potential of soil carbon sequestration never attains its technical potential as estimated by soil scientists. The study also estimates the impacts of agricultural mitigation policies on welfare, prices, production, and input use in the traditional food and fiber sector and the effects of emission leakage from unregulated agricultural sources
Loneliness and sleep: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Despite the mounting evidence linking loneliness with health, the mechanisms underlying this relationship remain obscure. This systematic review and meta-analysis on the association between loneliness and one potential mechanismāsleepāidentified 27 relevant articles. Loneliness correlated with self-reported sleep disturbance (rā=ā.28, 95% confidence interval (.24, .33)) but not duration, across a diverse set of samples and measures. There was no evidence supporting age or gender as moderators or suggesting publication bias. The longitudinal relationship between loneliness and sleep remains unclear. Loneliness is related to sleep disturbance, but research is necessary to determine directionality, examine the influence of other factors, and speak to causality
An Investigation of Whether Vitamin E Preferentially Interacts with Polyunsaturated Lipids
poster abstractVitamin E (Ī±-tocopherol) is a lipid-soluble antioxidant that has the role of protecting phospholipids from oxidation in membranes. A question that remains is how the low concentration of Ī±-tocopherol found in whole cells can protect the relatively large concentration of polyunsaturated phospholipids found in membranes that are particularly vulnerable to oxidative attack. We hypothesize that Ī±-tocopherol colocalizes with polyunsaturated phospholipids to optimize its role as an antioxidant. This project attempts to test this hypothesis by comparing the effect of Ī±-tocopherol on the molecular organization of 1-palmitoyl-2-docosahexaenoyl-sn-glycerophosphatidylethanolamine (16:0-22:6PE, PDPE) and, as a monounsaturated control, 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycerophosphatidylethanolamine (16:0-18:1PE, POPE) in mixtures with sphingomyelin (SM). By solid-state 2H NMR spectroscopy, we directly observe order and phase behavior of POPE-d31 and PDPE-d31 (analogs of POPE and PDPE with a perdeuterated sn-1 chain) in the mixed membranes. In complementary X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry experiments we further probe phase behavior. The spectra observed for POPE-d31 in POPE/SM/Ī±-tocopherol (2:2:1 mol) reveal that a transition from gel to liquid crystalline phase is no longer apparent. At higher temperatures there is a superposition of two spectral components that we ascribe to Ī±-tocopherol promoting a transition from lamellar to inverted hexagonal (HII) phase. Analysis of depaked spectra shows that order is increased by about 8 % and that the amount of HII phase increases with temperature, ranging from 7 (31 Ā°C) to 41 % (65 Ā°C). In mixed membranes where POPE-d31 is replaced by PDPE-d31, we shall investigate whether there is a greater tendency for Ī±-tocopherol to increase order and destabilize bilayer structure for the polyunsaturated phospholipid
Experimental and theoretical investigation of the triple differential cross section for electron impact ionization of pyrimidine molecules
Cross-section data for electron impact induced ionization of bio-molecules are important for modelling the deposition of energy within a biological medium and for gaining knowledge of electron driven processes at the molecular level. Triply differential cross sections have been measured for the electron impact ionization of the outer valence 7b2 and 10a1 orbitals of pyrimidine, using the (e, 2e) technique. The measurements have been performed with coplanar asymmetric kinematics, at an incident electron energy of 250 eV and ejected electron energy of 20 eV, for scattered electron angles of ā5Ā°, ā10Ā°, and ā15Ā°. The ejected electron angular range encompasses both the binary and recoil peaks in the triple differential cross section. Corresponding theoretical calculations have been performed using the molecular 3-body distorted wave model and are in reasonably good agreement with the present experiment
The impact of azithromycin therapy on the airway microbiota in asthma
There is interest in the use of macrolide antibiotics in asthma. Macrolides have been shown to improve airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) and measures of airway inflammation. The degree of AHR may relate to the microbiota present in the airways, with a recent study reporting that patients with asthma with a significant improvement in AHR following treatment with clarithromycin had a higher bacterial diversity prior to treatment. To our knowledge, the impact on the asthmatic airway microbiota of an antibiotic has not been reported and we therefore set out to establish if macrolide therapy was associated with a change in airway microbiota in asthma
