    Evolution of the UV Excess in Early-Type Galaxies

    We examine the UV emission from luminous early-type galaxies as a function of redshift. We perform a stacking analysis using Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) images of galaxies in the NOAO Deep Wide Field Survey (NDWFS) Bo\"otes field and examine the evolution in the UV colors of the average galaxy. Our sample, selected to have minimal ongoing star formation based on the optical to mid-IR SEDs of the galaxies, includes 1843 galaxies spanning the redshift range 0.05z0.650.05\leq z\leq0.65. We find evidence that the strength of the UV excess decreases, on average, with redshift, and our measurements also show moderate disagreement with previous models of the UV excess. Our results show little evolution in the shape of the UV continuum with redshift, consistent either with the binary model for the formation of Extreme Horizontal Branch (EHB) stars or with no evolution in EHB morphology with look-back time. However, the binary formation model predicts that the strength of the UV excess should also be relatively constant, in contradiction with our measured results. Finally, we see no significant influence of a galaxy's environment on the strength of its UV excess.Comment: 30 pages, 10 figures; accepted by ApJ.     Effect of Artificial Pitch Damping on the Longitudinal and Rolling Stability of Aircraft with Negative Static Margins

    A preliminary theoretical investigation has been made of the short-period longitudinal and steady-rolling (inertia coupling) stability of a hypersonic glider configuration for center-of-gravity locations rear-ward of the airplane neutral point. Such center-of-gravity positions for subsonic flight would improve performance by reducing supersonic and hypersonic static margins and trim drag. Results are presented of stability calculations and a simulator study for a velocity of 700 ft/sec and an altitude of 401,000 feet. With no augmentation, the airplane was rapidly divergent and was considered unsatisfactory in the simulator study. When a pitch damper was employed as a stability augmenter, the short-period mode became overdamped, and the airplane was easily controlled on the simulator. A steady-rolling analysis showed that the airplane can be made free of rolling divergence for all roll rates with an appropriate damper gain

    Antikaon Production in Proton-Nucleus Reactions and the KK^- properties in nuclear matter

    We calculate the momentum-dependent potentials for K+K^+ and KK^- mesons in a dispersion approach at nuclear density ρ0\rho_0 using the information from the vacuum K+NK^+ N and KNK^- N scattering amplitudes, however, leaving out the resonance contributions for the in-medium analysis. Whereas the K+K^+ potential is found to be repulsive (\approx + 30 MeV) and to show only a moderate momentum dependence, the KK^- selfenergy at normal nuclear matter density turns out to be \approx - 200 MeV at zero momentum in line with kaon atomic data, however, decreases rapidly in magnitude for higher momenta. The antikaon production in p + A reactions is calculated within a coupled transport approach and compared to the data at KEK including different assumptions for the antikaon potentials. Furthermore, detailed predictions are made for p+12Cp + ^{12}C and p+207Pbp + ^{207}Pb reactions at 2.5 GeV in order to determine the momentum dependent antikaon potential experimentally.Comment: 27 pages, LaTeX, including 14 ps-figures, UGI-98-1

    Microstructural characterisation of TiAlTiAu and TiAlPdAu ohmic contacts to AlGaN/GaN

    Ti/Al/Ti/Au and Ti/Al/Pd/Au contacts to AlGaN/GaN have been investigated to ascertain the effect of annealing temperature on the structural evolution of the contacts. Ti/Al/Ti/Au contacts become ohmic after rapid thermal annealing at 750°C or higher, corresponding to the formation of an interfacial TiN phase, with inclusions penetrating through the AlGaN layer observed after annealing at 950°C. The Pd layer is shown to be more efficient at inhibiting diffusion of Au to the interface than Ti. Ohmic behaviour was not seen with the Ti/Al/Pd/Au scheme. Either the presence of Au at the interface may improve ohmic behaviour, or the Ti:Al ratio is insufficient in this scheme

    The status of precision electroweak measurements as of summer 2002 is reviewed. The recent results on the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon and on neutrino-nucleon scattering are discussed. Precision results on the electroweak interaction obtained by the experiments at the SLC, LEP and TEVATRON colliders are presented. The experimental results are compared with the predictions of the minimal Standard Model and are used to constrain its parameters, including the mass of the Higgs boson.
