The perseveration of checking thoughts and moodâasâinput hypothesis
This paper describes two experiments designed to investigate how a current model of task perseveration, the mood-as-input hypothesis, might be applied to activities relevant to compulsive checking. The mood-as-input hypothesis predicts that perseveration at an open-ended task will be determined by a combination of the âstop rulesâ adopted for the task, and the valency of the mood state in which the task is conducted. Experiment 1 required participants to generate items that should be checked for safety/security if they were leaving their home unattended. Experiment 2 used an analogue recall task, in which participants were asked to recall items from a comprehensive list of items that should be checked if they were to leave their home safe/secure. Both experiments found that perseveration at the tasks was determined by particular configurations of mood and stop rules for the task. Of most relevance to compulsive checking was the fact that facilitated perseveration occurred when participants were asked to undertake the tasks in a negative mood using âas many as canâ stop rules. Implications for the factors that develop and maintain compulsive checking are discussed
Searching for music: understanding the discovery, acquisition, processing and organization of music in a domestic setting for design
This series of studies make it clear that a wide range of both physical and digital resources are involved in domestic music consumption. The selection of digital resources is particularly evident, and it can be observed that domestic music consumption is a fragmented business, taking advantage of many different "channels'' for getting, using and preparing music. While there are not a series of common channels, each home displayed a variety of methods in respect to using metadata in multiple different modalities: regardless, the activities involved in getting, using and preparing music cohere through a noticeable, emergent set of workflows. We find that not only does metadata support searching, as one might expect, but also it pervades all parts of the workflow and is used in real-time as a reflexive artifact and in terms of its future perceived/prescribed use. The findings of the research raise a series of possibilities and issues that form the basis for understanding and designing for metadata use

Verification and Validation of NASA-Supported Enhancements to the Near Real Time Harmful Algal Blooms Observing System (HABSOS)
This report discusses verification and validation (V&V) assessment of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) ocean data products contributed by the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) and Applied Coherent Technologies (ACT) Corporation to National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration s (NOAA) Near Real Time (NRT) Harmful Algal Blooms Observing System (HABSOS). HABSOS is a maturing decision support tool (DST) used by NOAA and its partners involved with coastal and public health management
Subânanometer thick gold nanosheets as highly efficient catalysts
2D metal nanomaterials offer exciting prospects in terms of their properties and functions. However, the ambient aqueous synthesis of atomicallyâthin, 2D metallic nanomaterials represents a significant challenge. Herein, freestanding and atomicallyâthin gold nanosheets with a thickness of only 0.47 nm (two atomic layers thick) are synthesized via a oneâstep aqueous approach at 20 °C, using methyl orange as a confining agent. Owing to the high surfaceâareaâtoâvolume ratio, abundance of unsaturated atoms exposed on the surface and large interfacial areas arising from their ultrathin 2D nature, the asâprepared Au nanosheets demonstrate excellent catalysis performance in the model reaction of 4ânitrophenol reduction, and remarkable peroxidaseâmimicking activity, which enables a highly sensitive colorimetric sensing of H2O2 with a detection limit of 0.11 Ă 10â6 m. This work represents the first fabrication of freestanding 2D gold with a subânanometer thickness, opens up an innovative pathway toward atomicallyâthin metal nanomaterials that can serve as model systems for inspiring fundamental advances in materials science, and holds potential across a wide region of applications
Subânanometer thick gold nanosheets: subânanometer thick gold nanosheets as highly efficient catalysts (Adv. Sci. 21/2019)
In article number 1900911, Stephen D. Evans and coâworkers develop an ambient aqueous synthesis for preparing atomicallyâthin gold nanosheets (termed gold nanoseaweed, AuNSW, because of its morphology, color and aqueous growth). These AuNSWs represent the first freeâstanding 2D gold with a subânanometer thickness (0.47 nm, e.g., two atomic layers thick), and exhibit excellent catalysis performance in the model reaction of 4ânitrophenol reduction, as well as remarkable peroxidaseâmimicking activity
