Considerations for acquiring and analyzing 30 Hz video frames from charge coupled device (CCD) cameras mounted in the wing tips of a Beech T-34 aircraft are described. Particular attention is given to the characterization and correction of optical distortions inherent in the data

God: A Matter of Truth, a Matter of Interest

I would like initially to call attention to the terror of history as we who live in the latter half of the twentieth century experience it. I would like to call attention to a number of issues which all of us living at this historical moment are aware of and to which some of us, no doubt, have given a great deal of thought. These are issues that in one way or another threaten the planet that we live on, the quality of human life, the very survival not only of the human but of the evolutionary process itself. These issues include the population explosion, poverty, hunger, and environmental pollution. We must take responsibility for what is ours and see whether the world view in question can be restructured, reconstructed so that it might work for us once again, so that it might once again become the focus through which we can understand our experiences, interpret them, and gain a fullness of life. What I am suggesting is that all the stresses and strains that the theistic frame is experiencing today are not to be seen as a cause for despair. Rather these pressures represent a summons to accept our human responsibility. We must not abandon the frame nor simply reaffirm it blindly. Rather we must consider how the categories of the frame functioned in the past, how they can be reformulated so they can work again. We must try imaginatively to put the theistic frame together again, imaginatively put together a picture of the world and of human life based on our experience and try to see what sense it can make to speak of God. An earlier form of this paper was presented as a lecture in the Sacred Heart University Honors Program in April 1988

How does performance funding impact the open access mission of community colleges in Massachusetts?

    Get PDF
The purpose of this case study of four community colleges was to determine if the Massachusetts Performance Funding Formula (MAPFF) has negatively impacted access in two threats to access: 1) decreased affordability; and 2) restriction of admissions, enrollment, and recruitment in fiscal years 2014, 2015, and 2016. Participating senior administrators provided their perceptions of how the Massachusetts Performance Funding Formula impacted student access and their institutions. Access was negatively impacted by decreased affordability due to significant increases to tuition and fees the students pay. Access was also negatively impacted by a reduction and elimination of programs, courses, and sections

    I Love You!

[Verse 1]Lovers always singThe same familiar thing, I love you, I love you, I do. How nice it would beTo do it differently, But now that I\u27m singing to you [Chorus] I love you, I love you, Is all that I can sayI love you, I love you.The same old words I\u27m saying in the same old wayI love you, I love you.Three words that are divine. And now my dear, I\u27m waiting to hearThe words that make you mine. I mine. [Verse 2]Poets always seemTo find some new love theme,With phrases both novel and sweet. Each time that I tryIdeas pass me by,So all I can do is repeat [Chorus] [French original written in italics above music] Tous les amoureux, Les jeunes et les vieuxSe disent ces deux mots charmants,C\u27est pour tous les coeurs L\u27expression du bonheurC\u27est l\u27aveu d\u27un secret troublant:Je t\u27aime, Je t\u27aime,Ces mots simples pourtant,Je t\u27aime, Je t\u27aime,Partout on les entend aux l\u27evres des amants,Je t\u27aime, Je t\u27aime.

Mode shape analysis using a commercially available peak store video frame buffer

Time exposure photography, sometimes coupled with strobe illumination, is an accepted method for motion analysis that bypasses frame by frame analysis and resynthesis of data. Garden variety video cameras can now exploit this technique using a unique frame buffer that is a non-integrating memory that compares incoming data with that already stored. The device continuously outputs an analog video signal of the stored contents which can then be redigitized and analyzed using conventional equipment. Historically, photographic time exposures have been used to record the displacement envelope of harmonically oscillating structures to show mode shape. Mode shape analysis is crucial, for example, in aeroelastic testing of wind tunnel models. Aerodynamic, inertial, and elastic forces can couple together leading to catastrophic failure of a poorly designed aircraft. This paper will explore the usefulness of the peak store device as a videometric tool and in particular discuss methods for analyzing a targeted vibrating plate using the 'peak store' in conjunction with calibration methods familiar to the close-range videometry community. Results for the first three normal modes will be presented

    Software Configurable Multichannel Transceiver

Emerging test instrumentation and test scenarios increasingly require network communication to manage complexity. Adapting wireless communication infrastructure to accommodate challenging testing needs can benefit from reconfigurable radio technology. A fundamental requirement for a software-definable radio system is independence from carrier frequencies, one of the radio components that to date has seen only limited progress toward programmability. This paper overviews an ongoing project to validate the viability of a promising chipset that performs conversion of radio frequency (RF) signals directly into digital data for the wireless receiver and, for the transmitter, converts digital data into RF signals. The Software Configurable Multichannel Transceiver (SCMT) enables four transmitters and four receivers in a single unit the size of a commodity disk drive, programmable for any frequency band between 1 MHz and 6 GHz

The Stockholm Paradigm: Lessons for the Emerging Infectious Disease Crisis

    Get PDF
The emerging infectious disease (EID) crisis represents an immediate existential threat to modern humanity. Current policies aimed at coping with the EID crisis are ineffective and unsustainably expensive. They have failed because they are based on a scientific paradigm that produced the parasite paradox. The Stockholm paradigm (SP) resolves the paradox by integrating four elements of evolutionary biology: ecological fitting, sloppy fitness space, coevolution, and responses to environmental perturbations. It explains why and how the EID crisis occurs and is expanding and what happens after an EID emerges that sets the stage for future EIDs. The SP provides a number of critical insights for changing scientific and public policy in a manner that allows us to begin coping with the EID crisis in an effective manner. It provides hope that we can anticipate EIDs and prevent them or at least mitigate their impacts. This article has been produced in support of and with appreciation for the efforts by Gábor Földvári of the Institute of Evolution, Centre for Ecological Research, and the Centre for Eco-Epidemiology, National Laboratory for Health Security (both located at 1121 Budapest, Konkoly-Thege Miklós út 29-33, Hungary). Through his untiring efforts, team building, and leadership, he has secured the first EU-wide team research grant. This work was supported by the National Research, Development and Innovation Office in Hungary (RRF-2.3.1-21-2022-00006) and the COST Action CA21170 “Prevention, anticipation and mitigation of tick-borne disease risk applying the DAMA protocol (PRAGMATICK),” which represent the first funded efforts to apply the principles of the DAMA protocol
