Quantum nondemolition measurement of mechanical motion quanta
The fields of opto- and electromechanics have facilitated numerous advances
in the areas of precision measurement and sensing, ultimately driving the
studies of mechanical systems into the quantum regime. To date, however, the
quantization of the mechanical motion and the associated quantum jumps between
phonon states remains elusive. For optomechanical systems, the coupling to the
environment was shown to preclude the detection of the mechanical mode
occupation, unless strong single photon optomechanical coupling is achieved.
Here, we propose and analyse an electromechanical setup, which allows to
overcome this limitation and resolve the energy levels of a mechanical
oscillator. We find that the heating of the membrane, caused by the interaction
with the environment and unwanted couplings, can be suppressed for carefully
designed electromechanical systems. The results suggest that phonon number

Examining Whether AOSLO-Based Foveal Cone Metrics in Achromatopsia and Albinism Are Representative of Foveal Cone Structure
Purpose: Adaptive optics scanning light ophthalmoscopy (AOSLO) imaging in patients with achromatopsia (ACHM) and albinism is not always successful. Here, we tested whether optical coherence tomography (OCT) measures of foveal structure differed between patients for whom AOSLO images were either quantifiable or unquantifiable.
Methods: The study included 166 subjects (84 with ACHM; 82 with albinism) with previously acquired OCT scans, AOSLO images, and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA, if available). Foveal OCT scans were assessed for outer retinal structure, outer nuclear layer thickness, and hypoplasia. AOSLO images were graded as quantifiable if a peak cone density could be measured and/or usable if the location of peak density could be identified and the parafoveal mosaic was quantifiable.
Results: Forty-nine percent of subjects with ACHM and 57% of subjects with albinism had quantifiable AOSLO images. Older age and better BCVA were found in subjects with quantifiable AOSLO images for both ACHM (P = 0.0214 and P = 0.0276, respectively) and albinism (P = 0.0073 and P < 0.0004, respectively). There was a significant trend between ellipsoid zone appearance and ability to quantify AOSLO (P = 0.0028). In albinism, OCT metrics of cone structure did not differ between groups.
Conclusions: Previously reported AOSLO-based cone density measures in ACHM may not necessarily reflect the degree of remnant cone structure in these patients.
Translational Relevance: Until AOSLO is successful in all patients with ACHM and albinism, the possibility of the reported data from a particular cohort not being representative of the entire population remains an important issue to consider when interpreting results from AOSLO studies
The Dawn of Open Access to Phylogenetic Data
The scientific enterprise depends critically on the preservation of and open
access to published data. This basic tenet applies acutely to phylogenies
(estimates of evolutionary relationships among species). Increasingly,
phylogenies are estimated from increasingly large, genome-scale datasets using
increasingly complex statistical methods that require increasing levels of
expertise and computational investment. Moreover, the resulting phylogenetic
data provide an explicit historical perspective that critically informs
research in a vast and growing number of scientific disciplines. One such use
is the study of changes in rates of lineage diversification (speciation -
extinction) through time. As part of a meta-analysis in this area, we sought to
collect phylogenetic data (comprising nucleotide sequence alignment and tree
files) from 217 studies published in 46 journals over a 13-year period. We
document our attempts to procure those data (from online archives and by direct
request to corresponding authors), and report results of analyses (using
Bayesian logistic regression) to assess the impact of various factors on the
success of our efforts. Overall, complete phylogenetic data for ~60% of these
studies are effectively lost to science. Our study indicates that phylogenetic
data are more likely to be deposited in online archives and/or shared upon
request when: (1) the publishing journal has a strong data-sharing policy; (2)
the publishing journal has a higher impact factor, and; (3) the data are
requested from faculty rather than students. Although the situation appears
dire, our analyses suggest that it is far from hopeless: recent initiatives by
the scientific community -- including policy changes by journals and funding
agencies -- are improving the state of affairs
The cost of promiscuity: sexual transmission of Nosema microsporidian parasites in polyandrous honey bees
Multiple mating (and insemination) by females with different males, polyandry, is widespread across animals, due to material and/or genetic benefits for females. It reaches particularly high levels in some social insects, in which queens can produce significantly fitter colonies by being polyandrous. It is therefore a paradox that two thirds of eusocial hymenopteran insects appear to be exclusively monandrous, in spite of the fitness benefits that polyandry could provide. One possible cost of polyandry could be sexually transmitted parasites, but evidence for these in social insects is extremely limited. Here we show that two different species of Nosema microsporidian parasites can transmit sexually in the honey bee Apis mellifera. Honey bee males that are infected by the parasite have Nosema spores in their semen, and queens artificially inseminated with either Nosema spores or the semen of Nosema-infected males became infected by the parasite. The emergent and more virulent N. ceranae achieved much higher rates of infection following insemination than did N. apis. The results provide the first quantitative evidence of a sexually transmitted disease (STD) in social insects, indicating that STDs may represent a potential cost of polyandry in social insects
Active microrheology and simultaneous visualization of sheared phospholipid monolayers
Two-dimensional films of surface-active agents—from phospholipids and proteins to nanoparticles and colloids—stabilize fluid interfaces, which are essential to the science, technology and engineering of everyday life. The 2D nature of interfaces present unique challenges and opportunities: coupling between the 2D films and the bulk fluids complicates the measurement of surface dynamic properties, but allows the interfacial microstructure to be directly visualized during deformation. Here we present a novel technique that combines active microrheology with fluorescence microscopy to visualize fluid interfaces as they deform under applied stress, allowing structure and rheology to be correlated on the micron-scale in monolayer films. We show that even simple, single-component lipid monolayers can exhibit viscoelasticity, history dependence, a yield stress and hours-long time scales for elastic recoil and aging. Simultaneous visualization of the monolayer under stress shows that the rich dynamical response results from the cooperative dynamics and deformation of liquid-crystalline domains and their boundaries
Internet-based randomised controlled trials for the evaluation of complementary and alternative medicines: probiotics in spondyloarthropathy
<b>Background</b>
The clinical effectiveness of complementary and alternative medicines (CAMs) is widely debated because of a lack of clinical trials. The internet may provide an effective and economical approach for undertaking randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of low-risk interventions. We investigated whether the internet could be used to perform an internet-based RCT of a CAM fulfilling the revised CONSORT (Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials) statement quality checklist for reporting of RCTs. A secondary aim was to examine the effect of probiotics compared to placebo in terms of well-being over 12 weeks.<p></p>
<b>Methods</b>
People aged ≥18 years with confirmed spondyloarthropathy living in the United Kingdom with internet access were invited to participate in an internet-based RCT of probiotic compared to placebo for improving well-being and bowel symptoms. The intervention was a probiotic containing 4 strains of live bacteria or identical placebo taken by mouth daily for 3 months. The primary outcome measure was the performance of the trial according to the revised CONSORT statement.<p></p>
<b>Results</b>
147 people were randomised into the trial. The internet-based trial of the CAM fulfilled the revised CONSORT statement such as efficient blinding, allocation concealment, intention to treat analysis and flow of participants through the trial. Recruitment of the required number of participants was completed in 19 months. Sixty-five percent (96/147) completed the entire 3 months of the trial. The trial was low cost and demonstrated that in an intention to treat analysis, probiotics did not improve well-being or bowel symptoms.<p></p>
<b>Conclusion</b>
The internet-based RCT proved to be a successful and economical method for examining this CAM intervention. Recruitment, adherence and completion rate were all similar to those reported with conventional RCTs but at a fraction of the cost. Internet-based RCTs can fulfil all the criteria of the revised CONSORT statement and are an appropriate method for studying low-risk interventions
Hyperon Photoproduction in the Nucleon Resonance Region
Cross-sections and recoil polarizations for the reactions gamma + p --> K^+ +
Lambda and gamma + p --> K^+ + Sigma^0 have been measured with high statistics
and with good angular coverage for center-of-mass energies between 1.6 and 2.3
GeV. In the K^+Lambda channel we confirm a structure near W=1.9 GeV at backward
kaon angles, but our data shows a more complex s- and u- channel resonance
structure than previously seen. This structure is present at forward and
backward angles but not central angles, and its position and width change with
angle, indicating that more than one resonance is playing a role. Rising
back-angle cross sections at higher energies and large positive polarization at
backward angles are consistent with sizable s- or u-channel contributions. None
of the model calculations we present can consistently explain these aspects of
