Medium Modifications of Hadron Properties and Partonic Processes
Chiral symmetry is one of the most fundamental symmetries in QCD. It is
closely connected to hadron properties in the nuclear medium via the reduction
of the quark condensate , manifesting the partial restoration of
chiral symmetry. To better understand this important issue, a number of
Jefferson Lab experiments over the past decade have focused on understanding
properties of mesons and nucleons in the nuclear medium, often benefiting from
the high polarization and luminosity of the CEBAF accelerator. In particular, a
novel, accurate, polarization transfer measurement technique revealed for the
first time a strong indication that the bound proton electromagnetic form
factors in 4He may be modified compared to those in the vacuum. Second, the
photoproduction of vector mesons on various nuclei has been measured via their
decay to e+e- to study possible in-medium effects on the properties of the rho
meson. In this experiment, no significant mass shift and some broadening
consistent with expected collisional broadening for the rho meson has been
observed, providing tight constraints on model calculations. Finally, processes
involving in-medium parton propagation have been studied. The medium
modifications of the quark fragmentation functions have been extracted with

Method for detecting coliform organisms
A method and apparatus are disclosed for determining the concentration of coliform bacteria in a sample. The sample containing the coliform bacteria is cultured in a liquid growth medium. The cultured bacteria produce hydrogen and the hydrogen is vented to a second cell containing a buffer solution in which the hydrogen dissolves. By measuring the potential change in the buffer solution caused by the hydrogen, as a function of time, the initial concentration of bacteria in the sample is determined. Alternatively, the potential change in the buffer solution can be compared with the potential change in the liquid growth medium to verify that the potential change in the liquid growth medium is produced primarily by the hydrogen gas produced by the coliform bacteria
Study of meteoroid detection systems applicable to the outer planets missions
Modifications to the Pioneer 10/11 meteoroid detection experiment to allow it to be used for outer planet missions were investigated. Both pressurized cells and metal-oxide silicon (MOS) penetration detectors are considered. Both the sensors systems and the electronics are treated. Investigation of the calibration and characterization of the MOS penetration detector is reported
For Adults Only: Queer Theory Meets the Self and Identity in Adult Education
This article brings the perspective of Queer theory to the field of Adult Education as a way of examining critically the notions of self, identity, and sexuality as they have been taken for granted within the field. Adult Education, like most fields of practice and research, assumes the Western ideals of the monadic self, clear and undisputed identities, and heterosexuality. However, the intersection of a strong postmodern voice in both academia and the popular culture, the increasing exploration of other-than-hetero-sexualities in the media, and the foregrounding of sexuality in the work of adult education researchers (Brooks & Edwards,1997; Edwards, 1997; Hill,1995; Edwards, Grace, Henson, B., Henson, W., Hill, & Taylor, 1998; Tisdell & Taylor, 1995) forces the question of what relevance Queer theory has for adult educators
Struggling readers? Using theory to complicate understandings of what it means to be literate in school
Theories guide many aspects of literacy research. In this article we describe four theoretical approaches that we have used in qualitative research with students who are perceived to struggle with reading in school, including: New Literacy Studies, Disability Studies in Education, Bioecological Systems Theory, and Cultural Historical Activity Theory. We provide a brief overview of each of the theories and then explain how we have used them to gain insights about students with whom we have worked in the context of our research. Although grounded in distinct perspectives, we argue that each of the theories are lenses through which we were better able to understand the complexities of students’ struggles with reading. We further argue that the theories are united in their ability to broaden the perspectives of researchers and teachers to better account for the social, cultural, and institutional factors that shape literacy teaching and learning in schools. We conclude by questioning the use of the term “struggling reader” and highlighting the implications of our individual theoretical frames and analyses for both research and practice.Accepted manuscrip
Grain growth in the envelopes and disks of Class I protostars
We present new 3 mm ATCA data of two Class I Young Stellar Objects in the
Ophiucus star forming region: Elias29 and WL12. For our analysis we compare
them with archival 1.1 mm SMA data. In the (u,v) plane the two sources present
a similar behavior: a nearly constant non-zero emission at long baselines,
which suggests the presence of an unresolved component and an increase of the
fluxes at short baselines, related to the presence of an extended envelope. Our
data analysis leads to unusually low values of the spectral index , which may indicate that mm-sized dust grains have already formed
both in the envelopes and in the disk-like structures at such early stages. To
explore the possible scenarios for the interpretation of the sources we perform
a radiative transfer modeling using a Monte Carlo code, in order to take into
account possible deviations from the Rayleigh-Jeans and optically thin regimes.
Comparison between the model outputs and the observations indicates that dust
grains may form aggregates up to millimeter size already in the inner regions
of the envelopes of Class I YSOs. Moreover, we conclude that the embedded
disk-like structures in our two Class Is are probably very compact, in
particular in the case of WL12, with outer radii down to tens of AU.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, Accepted for publication in A&
A holistic multimodal approach to the non-invasive analysis of watercolour paintings
A holistic approach using non-invasive multimodal imaging and spectroscopic techniques to study the materials (pigments, drawing materials and paper) and painting techniques of watercolour paintings is presented. The non-invasive imaging and spectroscopic techniques include VIS-NIR reflectance spectroscopy and multispectral imaging, micro-Raman spectroscopy, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) and optical coherence tomography (OCT). The three spectroscopic techniques complement each other in pigment identification. Multispectral imaging (near infrared bands), OCT and micro-Raman complement each other in the visualisation and identification of the drawing material. OCT probes the microstructure and light scattering properties of the substrate while XRF detects the elemental composition that indicates the sizing methods and the filler content . The multiple techniques were applied in a study of forty six 19th century Chinese export watercolours from the Victoria & Albert Museum (V&A) and the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) to examine to what extent the non-invasive analysis techniques employed complement each other and how much useful information about the paintings can be extracted to address art conservation and history questions
