Frost as an insulator
Insulating qualities of frost and mechanisms for using frost in specific applications in controlled experiments are discussed. With available supply of moist air, frost possesses inherent advantage of easy insulation of cryogenic lines and improvement of overall system efficiency
The low-cost cryostat
Inexpensive method of fabricating cryostats uses polyurethane, super insulation, fiber glass, and cardboard/plywood. Cryostat weighs 1/10 of Dewar, occupies about same volume, is easy to handle, requires no metal parts, and can be formed into virtually any configuration
Storage of ascocarps and ascospore progeny of Cochliobolus heterostrophus.
Cochliobolus heterostrophus is a filamentous ascomycete that causes southern leaf blight of maize
Modeling the dynamics of social systems
AbstractA procedure is demonstrated for constructing mathematical models of social systems and then simulating the behavior of such systems on a computer. First, sociological concepts are transformed into well-defined variables, and then system dynamics techniques are employed to construct a set of differential and algebraic equations that describe the dynamics of those variables. These dynamics are then simulated and used to establish the empirical adequacy of the theory being modeled. An Example is provided for the specific social theory dealing with norm systems

Innovative Trial Investigates Molecular Drivers of Triple-Negative Breast Cancer: A new clinical trial focusing on molecular biomarkers of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is attempting to advance targeted therapy against the deadly disease. Smac Mimetics Show Activity against Myelofibrosis: Not all cases of myelofibrosis respond well to ruxolitinib, the only drug approved for this disease. However, early studies indicate that a new class of drugs, Smac mimetics, can achieve a response in some patients with myelofibrosis. Urothelial Cancer Subtypes Predict Treatment Response: Subtypes of urothelial cancer identified through gene expression profiling predict which patients are most likely to respond to neoadjuvant cisplatin-based chemotherapy, according to research from The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. These findings will pave the way for a more personalized approach to treatment for urothelial cancers, including difficult-to-treat muscle-invasive bladder cancer.
