Biostimulation of in situ microbial degradation processes in organically-enriched sediments mitigates the impact of aquaculture

Abstract Fish farm deposition, resulting in organic matter accumulation on bottom sediments, has been identified as among the main phenomena causing negative environmental impacts in aquaculture. An in situ bioremediation treatment was carried out in order to reduce the organic matter accumulation in the fish farm sediments by promoting the natural microbial biodegradation processes. To assess the effect of the treatment, the concentration of organic matter in the sediment and its microbial degradation, as well as the response of the benthic prokaryotic community, were investigated. The results showed a significant effect of the treatment in stimulating microbial degradation rates, and the consequent decrease in the concentration of biochemical components beneath the cages during the treatment. During the bioremediation process, the prokaryotic community in the fish farm sediment responded to the overall improvement of the sediment conditions by showing the decrease of certain anaerobic taxa (e.g. Clostridiales, Acidaminobacteraceae and Caldilinaceae). This suggested that the bioactivator was effective in promoting a shift from an anaerobic to an aerobic metabolism in the prokaryotic community. However, the larger importance of Lachnospiraceae (members of the gut and faecal microbiota of the farmed fishes) in treated compared to non-treated sediments suggested that the bioactivator was not efficient in reducing the accumulation of faecal bacteria from the farmed fishes. Our results indicate that bioremediation is a promising tool to mitigate the aquaculture impact in fish farm sediments, and that further research needs to be oriented to identifying more successful interventions able to specifically target also fish-faeces related microbes

Scenarios for the future of consumption of no-lo alcoholic beverages by generation Z and strategic implications and financial forecasts for campari group - scenarios suitable for a product launch

The study aims to understand the consumption attitudes of generation Z towards alcoholic beverages and the consequent development of the non-alcoholic and low-alcoholic beverages market in the spend of 8 years. Four scenarios were designed following the method of the Intuitive Logics School. The development of the scenarios was placed in the context of Campari Group, one of the main players for the branded beverage industry, by collaborating with knowledge holders of the company through interviews and a workshop. Finally, a coherent strategy accompanied by financial forecasts and indicators aimed at monitoring activities were proposed to respond to future developments

The Italian version of the Virtual Dementia Tour: Manual translation and an analysis of consistency, validity, and reliability of its pre‐ post‐experience survey

Abstract Introduction Clinical indications on how to approach caregiving with a person living with dementia underline the need “to have an empathic attitude” requiring the caregiver to view the world from the perspective of the person with dementia. However, it is not easy for the caregiver to understand the perspective their patients have on day‐to‐day experiences. To put the caregivers in the person with dementia's shoes, the Virtual Dementia Tour (VDT) was developed in 2001, and has been administered to millions of health professionals, community leaders, and family caregivers. Method In this paper we present the Italian version of the VDT and discuss its internal validity and test–retest reliability for the pre–post experience survey defined by the VDT procedure. Results An Italian sample (N = 419; mean age = 44.8; standard deviation 14.2) completed the tour and a 5‐item survey provided before and after the experience revealed the disposition toward people with dementia changed. Discussion The VDT Italian version wasrevealed to be valid in supporting a positive perspective change in the perception of dementia as is seen in the original VDT used in English‐speaking countries. Highlights Empathy predicts a higher quality of caregiving for the person living with dementia. The Virtual Dementia Tour (VDT) provides an experience from the person living with dementia's perspective and supports empathy. We present the first Italian version of VDT and its manual translation and validation. Italian VDT internal consistency and test–retest reliability were calculated. Results confirms the reliability and validity of the Italian VDT for empathy

UniBS4All: A Mobile Application for Accessible Wayfinding and Navigation in an Urban University Campus

    No full text
This paper presents the UniBS4All project, aimed at developing systems and practices for the creation of an accessible urban university campus. UniBS4All is also the name of a mobile application able to suggest personalized navigation paths towards and among the buildings of the University of Brescia. In particular, on the basis of the disabilities of the user (motor disability and/or visual impairment) and on the chosen path type (pedestrian, driving or with public transportation), the app proposes an accessible path, that is, a path able to avoid architectural barriers. The app is based on Google Maps API and exploits Google Directions API to compute the paths tailored to the users' characteristics and preferences

Effects of sediment flushing from a small Alpine reservoir on downstream aquatic fauna

Sediment flushing is currently performed to recover the storage capacity of small-sized to medium-sized reservoirs. However, its environmental impacts are not yet adequately quantified. This work aimed to evaluate the effects of a 3-day sediment flushing from a small reservoir in the Italian Alps on downstream freshwater fauna. Biomonitoring was carried out in two streams. In the impounded stream, benthic macroinvertebrates were surveyed immediately below the flushed reservoir. In the receiving stream, where diluting flows were released to reduce the sediment concentration and deposition, fish and macroinvertebrates were monitored at two sites, one above and one below the stream junction. Above the stream junction, the only disturbance was the increase in streamflow, while the reach below the stream junction was perturbed by the increase in both streamflow and sediment load. At the site closer to the flushed reservoir, the benthic community was almost completely impaired after the operations, and its recovery was still incomplete after 1 year. In the receiving stream, the average sediment concentration of approximately 6 g l(-1) and deposition of 30 kg m(-2) were estimated at the site subjected to the sediment increase. A density reduction of 80% and a change in composition affected the macroinvertebrate assemblage, which recovered in approximately 9 months. At the same site, the fish survey showed that brown trout juveniles were affected by the sediment load from the flushing operations. Only minor effects were detected on macroinvertebrates and fish subjected only to the increase in streamflow, i.e. above the stream junction

Dinamiche del ricordo e della rimozione. L’eccidio delle Fosse Ardeatine nelle opere documentarie e cinegiornalistiche italiane (1945-1955)

    No full text

A multidisciplinary consensus document on follow-up strategies for patients treated with percutaneous coronary intervention

    No full text
The number of percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI) is increasing worldwide. Follow-up strategies after PCI are extremely heterogeneous and can greatly affect the cost of medical care. Of note, clinical evaluations and non-invasive exams are often performed to low risk patients. In the present consensus document, practical advises are provided with respect to a tailored follow-up strategy on the basis of patients' risk profile. Three strategies follow-up have been defined and types and timing of clinical and instrumental evaluations are reported. Clinical and interventional cardiologists, cardiac rehabilitators, and general practitioners, who are in charge to manage post-PCI patients, equally contributed to the creation of the present document
