The NASA Lewis integrated propulsion and flight control simulator
A new flight simulation facility was developed at NASA-Lewis. The purpose of this flight simulator is to allow integrated propulsion control and flight control algorithm development and evaluation in real time. As a preliminary check of the simulator facility capabilities and correct integration of its components, the control design and physics models for a short take-off and vertical landing fighter aircraft model were shown, with their associated system integration and architecture, pilot vehicle interfaces, and display symbology. The initial testing and evaluation results show that this fixed based flight simulator can provide real time feedback and display of both airframe and propulsion variables for validation of integrated flight and propulsion control systems. Additionally, through the use of this flight simulator, various control design methodologies and cockpit mechanizations can be tested and evaluated in a real time environment
Drug Abuse in Our Community
What is new about people taking drugs: Nothing! Our society is a drug-oriented society. We have been both using drugs and, at times, abusing them for years. Furthermore, drug abuse has been written about for hundreds of years. What is alarming today, however, is the number of youth who are joining the drug scene from our junior high, high schools and colleges throughout the country. Fortunately, many of these will be involved only temporarily. Others will develop physical and psychological problems as a consequence of their involvement. Our responsibility is not limited to the small percentage that have short or long-term consequences, but to all youth in our community and country. Hopefully we can answer some of the pressing questions facing parents, teachers and professionals
Introduction
This issue offers you some sound sympathetic guidelines for dealing with a variety of problems commonly presented in offices and hospitals throughout the country. The basic philosophy of adolescent medicine is comprehensive care - promoting physical, mental, social, and moral health for all of your adolescent patients
Discourse and identity in a corpus of lesbian erotica
This article uses corpus linguistic methodologies to explore representations of lesbian desires and identities in a corpus of lesbian erotica from the 1980s and 1990s. We provide a critical examination of the ways in which “lesbian gender,” power, and desire are represented, (re-)produced, and enacted, often in ways that challenge hegemonic discourses of gender and sexuality. By examining word frequencies and collocations, we critically analyze some of the themes, processes, and patterns of representation in the texts. Although rooted in linguistics, we hope this article provides an accessible, interdisciplinary, and timely contribution toward developing understandings of discursive practices surrounding gender and sexuality

Staying in the science stream: patterns of participation in A-level science subjects in the UK.
This paper describes patterns of participation and attainment in A-level physics, chemistry and biology from 1961 to 2009. The A-level has long been seen as an important gateway qualification for higher level study, particularly in the sciences. This long term overview examines how recruitment to these three subjects has changed in the context of numerous policies and initiatives that seek to retain more young people in the sciences. The results show that recruitment to the pure sciences has stagnated, general trends have hardly varied and the track record of government policy in influencing change is not strong. There is no evidence for increasing achievement gaps between the sexes at A-level and even national policy requiring that all young people study science up to the age of 16 appears to have had little impact on recruitment at this leve
Expanded Fly Ash Clay Aggregate a Sustainable Alternative Coarse Aggregate for Concrete
Demand for natural aggregates in making concrete is increasing every day. Concrete is widely used in turnkey projects and small-scale projects. An alternative sustainable coarse aggregate for natural coarse aggregate can reduce the amount of pollution and preserve natural resource. An attempt is made in this research project to use locally available soil from the site and fly ash waste to prepare an alternative sustainable coarse aggregate for concrete to be used in small constructions. Concrete mix is prepared with natural aggregate and expanded fly ash clay aggregate EFCA and their fresh state, strength and durability properties were studied. The slump value of EFCA concrete under same water content is similar to that of natural aggregate concrete. A compressive strength of 21.45 MPa is achieved for EFCA concrete, which is acceptable for normal structural concrete. Flexural strength of 3.67 MPa is measured. Rapid chloride penetration test conducted on EFCA concrete showed moderate resistance to sulfate attack and a higher water penetration
LANDSAT/coastal processes
The author has identified the following significant results. Correlations between the satellite radiance values water color, Secchi disk visibility, turbidity, and attenuation coefficients were generally good. The residual was due to several factors including systematic errors in the remotely sensed data, errors, small time and space variations in the water quality measurements, and errors caused by experimental design. Satellite radiance values were closely correlated with the optical properties of the water
