Methods and Apparatus for Electrical Stimulation
A method of treating a neurological condition in a patient, the method including the step of applying an electrical stimulation from conductors to the patient\u27s head at a stimulation application site. In some embodiments, the electrical stimulation includes a composite electrical signal further comprising at least one signal form configured to provide long-term treatment of the neurological condition and at least one signal form configured to provide analgesia for short-term pain relief. Size and Shape Information Serve as Labels in the Alarm Calls of Gunnison’s Prairie Dogs Cynomys gunnisoni
Some animals have the capacity to produce different alarm calls for terrestrial and aerial predators. However, it is not clear what cognitive processes are involved in generating these calls. One possibility is the position of the predator: Anything on the ground receives a terrestrial predator call, and anything in the air receives an aerial predator call. Another possibility is that animals are able to recognize the physical features of predators and incorporate those into their calls. As a way of elucidating which of these mechanisms plays a primary role in generating the structure of different calls, we performed two field experiments with Gunnison’s prairie dogs. First, we presented the prairie dogs with a circle, a triangle, and a square, each moving across the colony at the same height and speed. Second, we presented the prairie dogs with two squares of differing sizes. DFA statistics showed that 82.6 percent of calls for the circle and 79.2 percent of the calls for the triangle were correctly classified, and 73.3 percent of the calls for the square were classified as either square or circle. Also, 100 percent of the calls for the larger square and 90 percent of the calls for the smaller square were correctly classified. Because both squares and circles are features of terrestrial predators and triangles are features of aerial predators, our results suggest that prairie dogs might have a cognitive mechanism that labels the abstract shape and size of different predators, rather than the position of the predator
Calibration of the GLAST Burst Monitor detectors
The GLAST Burst Monitor (GBM) will augment the capabilities of GLAST for the
detection of cosmic gamma-ray bursts by extending the energy range (20 MeV to >
300 GeV) of the Large Area Telescope (LAT) towards lower energies by 2
BGO-detectors (150 keV to 30 MeV) and 12 NaI(Tl) detectors (10 keV to 1 MeV).
The physical detector response of the GBM instrument for GRBs is determined
with the help of Monte Carlo simulations, which are supported and verified by
on-ground calibration measurements, performed extensively with the individual
detectors at the MPE in 2005. All flight and spare detectors were irradiated
with calibrated radioactive sources in the laboratory (from 14 keV to 4.43
MeV). The energy/channel-relations, the dependences of energy resolution and
effective areas on the energy and the angular responses were measured. Due to
the low number of emission lines of radioactive sources below 100 keV,
calibration measurements in the energy range from 10 keV to 60 keV were
performed with the X-ray radiometry working group of the
Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) at the BESSY synchrotron radiation

Thirty-two Goldbach Variations
We give thirty-two diverse proofs of a small mathematical gem--the
fundamental Euler sum identity zeta(2,1)=zeta(3) =8zeta(\bar 2,1). We also
discuss various generalizations for multiple harmonic (Euler) sums and some of
their many connections, thereby illustrating both the wide variety of
techniques fruitfully used to study such sums and the attraction of their

The 3rd Fermi GBM Gamma-Ray Burst Catalog: The First Six Years
Since its launch in 2008, the Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) has
triggered and located on average approximately two gamma-ray bursts (GRB) every
three days. Here we present the third of a series of catalogs of GRBs detected
by GBM, extending the second catalog by two more years, through the middle of
July 2014. The resulting list includes 1405 triggers identified as GRBs. The
intention of the GBM GRB catalog is to provide information to the community on
the most important observables of the GBM detected GRBs. For each GRB the
location and main characteristics of the prompt emission, the duration, peak
flux and fluence are derived. The latter two quantities are calculated for the
50-300~keV energy band, where the maximum energy release of GRBs in the
instrument reference system is observed, and also for a broader energy band
from 10-1000 keV, exploiting the full energy range of GBM's low-energy NaI(Tl)
detectors. Using statistical methods to assess clustering, we find that the
hardness and duration of GRBs are better fitted by a two-component model with
short-hard and long-soft bursts, than by a model with three components.
Furthermore, information is provided on the settings and modifications of the
triggering criteria and exceptional operational conditions during years five
and six in the mission. This third catalog is an official product of the Fermi
GBM science team, and the data files containing the complete results are
available from the High-Energy Astrophysics Science Archive Research Center

Innovative Analyses Support a Role for DNA Damage and an Aberrant Cell Cycle in Myelodysplastic Syndrome Pathogenesis
We used flow cytometry to analyze the cell cycle, DNA damage, and apoptosis in hematopoietic subsets in MDS marrow. Subsets were assigned using CD45, side scatter, CD34, and CD71. Cell cycle fractions were analyzed using DRAQ 5 (DNA content) and MPM-2 (mitoses). DNA damage was assessed using p-H2A.X, and apoptosis using Annexin V. Compared to controls, MDS patients demonstrated no increased mitoses in erythroid, myeloid, or CD34+ cells. Myeloid progenitors demonstrated increased G2 cells, which with no increased mitoses suggested delayed passage through G2. Myeloid progenitors demonstrated increased p-H2A.X, consistent with DNA damage causing this delay. Annexin V reactivity was equivalent in MDS and controls. Results for each parameter varied among hematopoietic compartments, demonstrating the need to analyze compartments separately. Our results suggest that peripheral cytopenias in MDS are due to delayed cell cycle passage of marrow progenitors and that this delayed passage and leukemic progression derive from excessive DNA damage
The Fermi GBM Gamma-Ray Burst Spectral Catalog: Four Years Of Data
In this catalog we present the updated set of spectral analyses of GRBs
detected by the Fermi Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor (GBM) during its first four years
of operation. It contains two types of spectra, time-integrated spectral fits
and spectral fits at the brightest time bin, from 943 triggered GRBs. Four
different spectral models were fitted to the data, resulting in a compendium of
more than 7500 spectra. The analysis was performed similarly, but not
identically to Goldstein et al. 2012. All 487 GRBs from the first two years
have been re-fitted using the same methodology as that of the 456 GRBs in years
three and four. We describe, in detail, our procedure and criteria for the
analysis, and present the results in the form of parameter distributions both
for the observer-frame and rest-frame quantities. The data files containing the

Expected Performance of the GLAST Burst Monitor
The GLAST Burst Monitor (GBM) will enhance LAT observations of GRBs by extending the spectral coverage from the LAT threshold down to approx. 8 kev, and will provide a trigger for re-orienting the spacecraft to observe delayed emission from selected bursts outside the LAT field of view. GBM consists of twelve NaI scintillation detectors operating in the 8 kev to 1 MeV energy range and two BGO scintillation detectors operating in the 150 keV to 30 MeV energy range. Detector resolution, effective area, and angular response have been determined by calibrations. Analyses indicate that the on-board burst threshold will be approx. 0.7 photon/cm2/s and the on-board burst localization accuracy will typically be better than 8 degrees
