Everyday and prospective memory deficits in ecstasy/polydrug users
The impact of ecstasy/polydrug use on real-world memory (i.e. everyday memory, cognitive failures and prospective memory [PM]) was investigated in a sample of 42 ecstasy/polydrug users and 31 non-ecstasy users. Laboratory-based PM tasks were administered along with self-reported measures of PM to test whether any ecstasy/polydrug-related impairment on the different aspects of PM was present. Self-reported measures of everyday memory and cognitive failures were also administered. Ecstasy/polydrug associated deficits were observed on both laboratory and self-reported measures of PM and everyday memory. The present study extends previous research by demonstrating that deficits in PM are real and cannot be simply attributed to self-misperceptions. The deficits observed reflect some general capacity underpinning both time- and event-based PM contexts and are not task specific. Among this group of ecstasy/polydrug users recreational use of cocaine was also prominently associated with PM deficits. Further research might explore the differential effects of individual illicit drugs on real-world memory

DOES GENDER, CLASS STANDING, AND HIGH SCHOOL ECONOMICS INFLUENCE STUDENTS' ECONOMIC LEARNING
This paper investigates how gender, maturity of the student, and previous economics study in high school contribute to economic learning. Economic learning is measured using the difference between pre- and post-test scores. OLS results suggest that high school economics plays a larger role in economic learning than either gender or maturity.Labor and Human Capital, Teaching/Communication/Extension/Profession,
We thought it might encourage participation.” Using lottery incentives to improve LibQUAL+(TM) response rates among students
Libraries deploying the LibQUAL+™ survey can offer a lottery incentive and many do in the hope of increasing response rates. Other libraries may be prohibited from offering one because of Institutional Review Board restrictions, as is the case at [institution name]. We wanted to discover why libraries offer lottery incentives and what kinds and if they believe these incentives have a positive impact on their response rates. The responding libraries hold a general belief that lottery incentives are effective but base this on feeling rather than research. We examine what the literature says about lottery incentives and student populations
Transverse instability and its long-term development for solitary waves of the (2+1)-Boussinesq equation
The stability properties of line solitary wave solutions of the
(2+1)-dimensional Boussinesq equation with respect to transverse perturbations
and their consequences are considered. A geometric condition arising from a
multi-symplectic formulation of this equation gives an explicit relation
between the parameters for transverse instability when the transverse
wavenumber is small. The Evans function is then computed explicitly, giving the
eigenvalues for transverse instability for all transverse wavenumbers. To
determine the nonlinear and long time implications of transverse instability,
numerical simulations are performed using pseudospectral discretization. The
numerics confirm the analytic results, and in all cases studied, transverse
instability leads to collapse.Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures; submitted to Phys. Rev.
B-R Colors of Globular Clusters in NGC 6166 (A2199)
We have analysed new R-band photometry of globular clusters in NGC 6166, the
cD galaxy in the cooling flow cluster A2199. In combination with the earlier B
photometry of Pritchet \& Harris (1990), we obtain BR colours for 40
globular clusters in NGC 6166. The mean BR is 1.26 0.11, corresponding
to a mean [Fe/H] = 1 0.4. Given that NGC 6166 is one of the most
luminous cD galaxies studied to date, our result implies significant scatter in
the relationship between mean cluster [Fe/H] and parent galaxy luminosity. We
obtain a globular cluster specific frequency of S 9, with a possible
range between 5 and 18. This value is inconsistent with the value of S
4 determined earlier by Pritchet \& Harris (1990) from B-band
photometry, and we discuss possible reasons for the discrepancy. Finally, we
reassess whether or not cooling flows are an important mechanism for forming
globular clusters in gE/cD galaxies.Comment: 8 pages, uuencoded, gzipped tar file with latex file, 6 figures (Fig
