Ghost in the Closet: Other Voices, Other Rooms and the Queer Gothic Family
The young queer characters in Truman Capote\u27s Other Voices, Other Roomsâespecially the protagonist, Joel Harrison Knoxâis able to carve out a legitimate space for themselves within heteronormative society; however, they do not achieve full equality, and their fates may even be read as a reiteration of the status quo. I argue that the novel is less about individual queer actualization, but rather about establishing larger support structures for the queer community, particularly in the form of the specially chosenâor curatedâfamily. In particular, Capote harnesses the tropes of Southern Gothicism by symbolizing family structuresâboth extant and burgeoningâ Through a series of âhauntedâ houses that the queer protagonist must enter and explore
The Shattering
Iâm dead. But Iâm still here. My soul got left behind. I didnât believe in souls but now I have to and
I donât remember when I was last alive. My memories have been blurred, shaken, chopped. I canât recall how it ended, there was a lot of pain, then it stopped. Suddenly.
(how did I die.
The Clinic
âWhat are you here for?â
Jeanette glanced up from her clasped hands. The questioner - a middle aged woman wearing a kitten sweater - stared at her expectantly.
Jeanette spun the ring around her fourth finger. âTo forget,â she muttered. She should have taken it off
Binding the body, binding the mind : the limitations of empathy in John Gabriel Stedman's âNarrative of a five years' expedition against the Revolted Negroes of Surinamâ [abstract]
This presentation was made during the session "Body Knowledge and Self-Study."Abstract of a presentation given at the 2008 Body Project conference at the University of Missouri-Columbia.John Gabriel Stedman's Narrative of a Five Years' Expedition against the Revolted Negroes of Surinam (1796) is laced with discussions of cruelty -- to slaves, to soldiers, even to monkeys. Throughout, Stedman prides himself on his empathy for all living creatures, showing his own pain, mental anguish, and revulsion at watching their suffering. However, Stedman's empathy seems intricately linked to the body -- in particular to bodily suffering. Thus, while the physically ill, injured, tortured, and raped all spark his sentimentality, Stedman seems oblivious to psychological trauma -- from forced labor, sexual coercion, or general subservience -- particularly in slaves. Though Stedman claims to "love the African" and to view Africans as his equals, and though he abhors the cruelties which they suffer by the lash, his empathy is limited by his relatively privileged social and economic status to the boundaries of the body

The (in)visible woman: A performative autoethnographic exploration of queer femme-ininity and queer isolation
This thesis is a performative autoethnographic exploration of my experiences existing betwixt-and-between the intersection of queer femme-ininity and isolation. Through a creative, affective rendition of my experiences, I detail and connect the nuances of queerness, femme-ininity, and queer isolation to provide a closer look at understanding queer identity with an absence of connection to the queer community. First, I provide an overview of the main theoretical and methodological approaches, and main concepts I utilize throughout my project. I then provide the intricacies of queer theory, queer intersectionality, and affect theory to provide theoretical explanations of my approach to queer isolation. After I explain the process of queer performative autoethnography, I weave my vignettes and narratives within existing research and scholarship regarding queer femme-ininity and social exclusion and isolation to create connections between embodied knowledge and scholarly literature. This project was ultimately a means through which I was able to creatively reflect on my experiences with queer isolation while also beginning the effect to bridge the gaps in knowledge that exist between concepts such as social isolation, communication, and queer femme identities
Marine Animalia Organism Diversity and Reef Condition on Two Reef Sites at Big Creek Beach and Boca del Drago, Bocas del Toro, PanamĂĄ
Ocean acidification, climate change, overfishing, and coastal development are endangering coral reefs across the globe. In Bocas del Toro, PanamĂĄ, coral reefs are especially threatened by the rapid growth in tourism and the subsequent anthropogenic effects caused by an increased human presence. To evaluate reef condition in this area, a study comparing percent coverage of live and dead coral as well as the diversity of marine Animalia organisms was conducted at one reef site in Big Creek beach and one reef site in Boca del Drago, Isla ColĂłn, Bocas del Toro. It was predicted that dead coral cover would be greater than live coral cover at both sites, and marine Animalia diversity would differ between sites and depend on coral reef condition. Percent coverage of live and dead coral was determined using counts from a 1x1m2 quadrat with cross hairs, and compared within each site utilizing an equal variance two-tailed t-test. Marine organisms at each site were counted using the same 1x1m2 quadrat with cross hairs, and their diversity calculated and compared through the Shannon-Wiener Biodiversity Index, the Evenness index, the Jaccard Index, and the Effective Number of Species unit. Results showed that while Boca del Drago had a higher percent coverage of live coral than did Big Creek beach, the percent coverage of dead coral was still significantly higher than that of live coral at both reef sites. The diversity of marine Animalia organisms was higher at the Boca del Drago reef, but was not correlated with the higher percent coverage of live coral observed. Further research is needed to determine the reason behind this increased diversity at the Boca del Drago site
