    SummaryIntroductionThis study consisted of a series of 43 patients with lower leg non-union that were treated with an inter-tibiofibular autograft (ITFG).Material and methodsAfter reviewing the surgical technique, the overall theory behind the treatment is described, including stabilization, soft tissue repair, infection control if necessary and then performing a procedure to help achieve bone union.ResultsAfter an average follow-up of 2years, all the patients achieved union, but some required additional procedures. Only one patient had a delayed reactivation of the infection, which was successfully treated.ConclusionA broad set of indications for ITFG are proposed for lower leg non-union cases, in particular non-infected cases.Level of evidenceLevel IV.     in this paper we give an account of the basic facts to be considered when one attempts to discretize the semigroup of solution operators for Linear Time Invariant - Time Delay Systems (LTI-TDS). Two main approaches are presented, namely pseudospectral and spectral, based respectively on classic interpolation when the state space is C = C(-\u3c4,0;C) and generalized Fourier projection when the state space is \u3c7 = C 7 L2(-\u3c4,0;C). Full discretization details for constructing the approximation matrices are given. Moreover, concise, yet fundamental, convergence results are discussed, with particular attention to their similarities and differences as well as pros and cons with regards to solution approximation and asymptotic stability detection

    Numerical computation of characteristic multipliers for linear time periodic coefficients delay differential equations

    In this work we address the question of asymptotic stability of linear delay differential equations (DDEs) with time periodic coefficients, a class which is recognized to be fundamental in machining tool. Since the dynamics of such a class of delay systems is governed by the dominant eigenvalues (multipliers) of the monodromy operator associated to the system of DDEs, i.e. the solution operator over the period of the coefficients, we discretize it by using pseudospectral differencing techniques based on collocation and approximate the dominant multipliers by the eigenvalues of the resulting matrix. The use of pseudospectral methods has already been proposed in the context of simpler DDEs. Here we fully generalize the method to the class of linear time periodic coefficients DDEs with arbitrary period and multiple discrete and distributed delays. The scheme is shown to have spectral accuracy by means of several numerical examples

    Validation of a sectional soot model based on a constant pressure tabulated chemistry approach for PM, PN and PSDF estimation in a GDI research engine

    Findings from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified particulate matter (PM) as carcinogenic to humans. While being a promising solution to reduce greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions and increase engine fuel economy, Gasoline Direct Injected (GDI) engines produce a number of particles (PN) of fine size higher than Port Fuel Injected (PFI) ones. As a consequence, the EU commission significantly tightened the emission standards for passenger cars, following which all gasoline engines will have to meet the euro-6d regulation coming into force in 2020. Efforts are made by the research community to understand the root causes leading to soot formation and possibly identify technical solutions to lower it. An important piece of the puzzle is the investigation of soot formation via 3D-CFD. To this aim, relevant efforts have been and are still being paid to adapt soot emissions models, originally developed for Diesel combustion, for GDI units. Among the many available models, one of the most advanced is the so-called Sectional Method. So far, studies presented in literature were not able to formulate a methodology to quantitatively match experimental PM, PN and PSDF without a dedicated soot model tuning. In the present work, a Sectional Method-based methodology to quantitatively predict GDI soot is presented and validated against PM, PN and PSDF measurements on a optically accessible GDI research unit. While adapting the model to GDI soot, attention is devoted to the modelling of soot precursor chemistry: a customized version of a pre-existing chemical kinetics mechanism, used to predict the formation of the key PAH (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) species, is presented and validated via 1D numerical simulations on a premixed flat flame burner dataset available in literature. The present work demonstrates that a Sectional Method-based approach can be a powerful tool to quantitatively predict engine-out soot emissions

    We are interested in the asymptotic stability of equilibria of structured populations modelled in terms of systems of Volterra functional equations coupled with delay differential equations. The standard approach based on studying the characteristic equation of the linearized system is often involved or even unattainable. Therefore, we propose and investigate a numerical method to compute the eigenvalues of the associated infinitesimal generator. The latter is discretized by using a pseudospectral approach, and the eigenvalues of the resulting matrix are the sought approximations. An algorithm is presented to explicitly construct the matrix from the model coefficients and parameters. The method is tested first on academic examples, showing its suitability also for a class of mathematical models much larger than that mentioned above, including neutral- and mixed-type equations. Applications to cannibalism and consumer\u2013resource models are then provided in order to illustrate the efficacy of the proposed technique, especially for studying bifurcations

    Resting state connectivity and cognitive performance in adults with cerebral autosomal-dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy

    Cognitive impairment is an inevitable feature of cerebral autosomal-dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL), affecting executive function, attention and processing speed from an early stage. Impairment is associated with structural markers such as lacunes, but associations with functional connectivity have not yet been reported. Twenty-two adults with genetically-confirmed CADASIL (11 male; aged 49.8 ± 11.2 years) underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging at rest. Intrinsic attentional/executive networks were identified using group independent components analysis. A linear regression model tested voxel-wise associations between cognitive measures and component spatial maps, and Pearson correlations were performed with mean intra-component connectivity z-scores. Two frontoparietal components were associated with cognitive performance. Voxel-wise analyses showed an association between one component cluster and processing speed (left middle temporal gyrus; peak −48, −18, −14; ZE = 5.65, pFWEcorr = 0.001). Mean connectivity in both components correlated with processing speed (r = 0.45, p = 0.043; r = 0.56, p = 0.008). Mean connectivity in one component correlated with faster Trailmaking B minus A time (r = −0.77, p < 0.001) and better executive performance (r = 0.56, p = 0.011). This preliminary study provides evidence for associations between cognitive performance and attentional network connectivity in CADASIL. Functional connectivity may be a useful biomarker of cognitive performance in this population

    Traumatic duodenal hematoma is a rare condition that is encountered in the paediatric age group following blunt abdominal trauma. It poses both a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. The main concern is increased morbidity secondary to delayed diagnosis and associated occult injuries to the adjacent structures. Most of these hematomas resolve spontaneously with conservative management, and the prognosis is good. We present a case of a 15-year-old boy who had a delayed presentation of duodenal hematoma and acute pancreatitis, which was treated conservatively with complete resolution
