Urban experiences: EMBT. Gas Natural´s building, Santa Caterina market and Diagonal-Mar park
The tourist route, a mass phenomenon, is a guided, partial tour (induced by someone else). The guides define
what should be visited. Yet strolling the streets and discovering requires time. We are at the end of the postcapitalist
period; the situationalists’ dérive, getting lost to find a new interpretation of the city are behind us.
The city is planned to be visited out of our civilisation’s need to turn itself into a spectacle.
This paper explores the relationship between the image of the city and the architecture, to determine what
concept of city is implicit – through the architect’s eye – on the project. We based this on a study of three
projects of Miralles-Tagliabue, in Barcelona, analysing the city andits transformation through the different
experiences.Peer Reviewe
Peer Reviewe
PROJECTING THE ARCHITECTURAL CONTEXT. RECENT DEVELOPMENTS ON THE CONCEPT OF RESTORATION
[EN] We analyze the evolution of the concept of rehabilitiation in architecture. We will part from the ideas of Ruskin and Viollet-Le-Duc, past the break catalyzed by the emergence of the Modern Movement, which introduces various organic interpretations in the second half of the twentieth century until, finally, a contemporary appreciation of the role of context in architecture takes place. We methodolologically exemplify this with particular EMBT (Miralles-Tagliabue) studio projects to establish that the architect, in this new approach, takes not only into account the building preexistences, but considers the ever transforming evolution of the global context (cultural, historical, physical, social,...) as the project's true aim.[ES] Se analiza la evolución temporal del concepto de rehabilitación en arquitectura.
This article presents the work of the Swiss painter Helmut Federle, which hides, behind an apparent geometric minimalism, a complexity based on sensorial nuances, symbolic references and wanted contradictions. In addition to his individual artistic work, Federle has done several works in collaboration with some architects, such as Herzog & de Meuron, Roger Diener or Adolf Krischanitz. There are important connections between the artist’s paintings and their architecture, which is demonstrated by analysing comparatively the work of both painter and architects, their theoretical arguments, as well as their mutual contributions, and of course their drawings, understood in both cases as a tool for experimentation and spontaneous ideation.Key words: Federle, painting, minimalism, Herzog and de Meuron, Zumthor.
