Cryoglobulinaemic vasculitis: classification and clinical and therapeutic aspects

    Get PDF
Cryoglobulinaemia may cause cutaneous vasculitis and glomerulonephritis, potentially leading to end stage renal failure. An important proportion of cryoglobulinaemias are secondary to hepatitis C virus infection. Emerging antiviral treatment options offer a chance for causal therapy of these cases of cryoglobulinaemia. This review summarises the classification and clinical and therapeutic aspects of cryoglobulinaemic vasculitis and glomerulonephritis

3D Gel Map of Arabidopsis Complex I

Complex I has a unique structure in plants and includes extra subunits. Here, we present a novel study to define its protein constituents. Mitochondria were isolated from Arabidopsis thaliana cell cultures, leaves, and roots. Subunits of complex I were resolved by 3D blue-native (BN)/SDS/SDS-PAGE and identified by mass spectrometry. Overall, 55 distinct proteins were found, seven of which occur in pairs of isoforms. We present evidence that Arabidopsis complex I consists of 49 distinct types of subunits, 40 of which represent homologs of bovine complex I. The nine other subunits represent special proteins absent in the animal linage of eukaryotes, most prominently a group of subunits related to bacterial gamma-type carbonic anhydrases. A GelMap http://www.gelmap.de/arabidopsis-3d-complex-i/ is presented for promoting future complex I research in Arabidopsis thaliana.DF

Agricultural diversification might be an answer to structural change in farming and demographic change in rural areas. Findings from empirical research highlight specific competences that enable farmers to successfully implement diversification strategies such as direct sales, social farming, or agro tourism. The identified competences are categorized as professional and personal competences based on the taxonomy of the National Qualifications Framework for Germany. The findings could serve as a guideline for designing courses that enable farmers to implement diversification strategies

    Get PDF
Peer Reviewe

Habitat preferences of Pomatoschistus minutus (Gobiidae) under laboratory conditions

Pomatoschistus minutus (Pallas, 1770) is a small camouflaged gobiid fish that lives in the shallow subtidal. While predation has been shown to be important for population structure in sand gobies evidence for active habitat selection remains controversial. We designed laboratory experiments in order to detect whether P. minutus actively chooses between different habitat types and which habitat characteristics are most important. P. minutus significantly chose darker bottom over lighter and also significantly prefers the vegetated half of an aquarium over the barren one. However there was no preference for either bare sandy bottom compared to the bare glass bottom. Overall our results unequivocally demonstrate that the soil characteristics are very important features for the habitat choice of P. minutus. We discuss these findings with a focus on predation risk and mating behaviour. Peer Reviewe

Ultrasonographic findings in a cow with vascular hamartoma of the liver: case report

    Get PDF
Backgroung: This is the first description of the ultrasonographic findings in a cow with vascular hamartoma of the liver. Case presentation: Ultrasonographic examination of a six-year-old Swiss Braunvieh cow revealed an excessive number of hypoechogenic blood vessels in the liver parenchyma and a thrombus in the right hepatic vein. The activities of the liver enzymes and the concentration of bilirubin were within the reference ranges. At postmortem examination, a poorly delineated, non-encapsulated lesion, measuring approximately 10 cm × 10 cm in diameter, was found in the right liver lobe. The cut surface of the lesion was sponge-like and contained extremely dilated blood vessels, one of which was occluded with a branching red thrombus. A vascular hamartoma of the liver with thrombosis was diagnosed based on the histological findings. Conclusions: To our knowledge, this is the first description of the ultrasonographic findings of vascular hamartoma of the liver in a cow. Hamartoma should be considered part of the differential diagnosis in cows with an abnormally large number of blood vessels in the liver parenchyma. This case report broadens the spectrum of liver diseases and ultrasonographic findings of the liver in cattle

This project examines job advertisements for field librarians in order to find out how the changing demands on this position have been reflected in the job descriptions. Therefore, employment ads for field librarian positions published on the mailing list Inetbib and the journal Bibliotheksdienst were collected and evaluated over a period of ten years. Besides formal criteria such as educational requirements and prior work experience, aspects such as professional qualification as well as soft skills were taken into consideration. As a result of the research it can be said that professional demands on field librarians have remained constant while the duties of this position have increased in scope and complexity due to the dynamic changes of the information infrastructure and the new demands on state-of-the-art information service activities in libraries

Certification of Equivalent Spherical Diameters of Silica Nanoparticles in Water - Certified Reference Material ERM®-FD100

This report describes the certification of the equivalent spherical diameters of silica nanoparticles suspended in aqueous solution, Certified Reference Material (CRM) ERM-FD100®. The CRM has been certified by the European Commission, Joint Research Centre, Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements (IRMM), Geel, BE. The intended use of this ERM-FD100 is to check the performance of instruments and methods that determine the particle diameter of nanoparticles (particle size ranging from approximately 1 nm to approximately 100 nm) suspended in a liquid medium. It is available in 10 mL pre-scored amber glass ampoules containing approximately 9 mL of suspension. The CRM was prepared from commercially available colloidal silica (Koestrosol 1530, Chemiewerk Bad Koestritz GmbH, DE). Certification of the CRM included testing of the homogeneity and stability of the ampouled diluted raw material, as well as the characterisation using an intercomparison approach. The material has been certified for the equivalent diameter of the silica nanoparticles in aqueous suspension using different methods. Certified values are the cumulants dynamic light scattering (DLS) intensity-weighted harmonic mean particle diameter, the line-start centrifugal liquid sedimentation (CLS) intensity-based modal (Stokes) particle diameter, the electron microscopic (transmission electron microscopy (TEM)/ scanning electron microscopy (SEM)) number-based modal particle diameter and the small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) intensity-weighted average particle diameter. Indicative values have been established for the volume-weighted mean equivalent spherical diameter via the SAXS method and for the zeta potential via the electrophoretic mobility (ELM) method. Additional informational values are given for the volume-weighted mean diameter via the DLS method, and the pH value of the ERM-FD100 suspension. Uncertainties are expanded uncertainties estimated in accordance with the Guide to the expression of uncertainty in measurement (GUM) with a coverage factor of k = 2, corresponding to a confidence interval of about 95 %. An exception is the mean equivalent volume-weighted diameter determined by the SAXS method which has a coverage factor of 2.8.JRC.DG.D.2-Reference material
