Substrate-induced pairing of Si ad-dimers on the Si(100)surface
The interaction between Si ad-dimers on the Si(100) surface has been studied by total-energy calculations with a three-particle Stillinger-Weber potential. We have found a strong attractive interaction between neighboring Si ad-dimers located in neighboring on-top and deep-channel positions in adjacent substrate dimer rows. This should result in a four-atomic block consisting of two dimers as an important elementary object of the Si(100) kinetics
A New Approach to Nuclear Collisions at RHIC Energies
We present a new parton model approach for nuclear collisions at RHIC
energies (and beyond). It is a selfconsistent treatment, using the same
formalism for calculating cross sections like the total and the inelastic one
and, on the other hand, particle production. Actually, the latter one is based
on an expression for the total cross section, expanded in terms of cut Feynman
diagrams. Dominant diagrams are assumed to be composed of parton ladders
between any pair of nucleons, with ordered virtualities from both ends of the
ladder.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures (proceedings Quark Matter 99
From GHz to mHz: A Multiwavelength Study of the Acoustically Active 14 August 2004 M7.4 Solar Flare
We carried out an electromagnetic acoustic analysis of the solar flare of 14
August 2004 in active region AR10656 from the radio to the hard X-ray spectrum.
The flare was a GOES soft X-ray class M7.4 and produced a detectable sun quake,
confirming earlier inferences that relatively low-energy flares may be able to
generate sun quakes. We introduce the hypothesis that the seismicity of the
active region is closely related to the heights of coronal magnetic loops that
conduct high-energy particles from the flare. In the case of relatively short
magnetic loops, chromospheric evaporation populates the loop interior with
ionized gas relatively rapidly, expediting the scattering of remaining trapped
high-energy electrons into the magnetic loss cone and their rapid precipitation
into the chromosphere. This increases both the intensity and suddenness of the
chromospheric heating, satisfying the basic conditions for an acoustic emission
that penetrates into the solar interior.Comment: Accepted in Solar Physic

Colored Spin Systems, BKP Evolution and finite N_c effects
Even within the framework of the leading logarithmic approximation the
eigenvalues of the BKP kernel for states of more than three reggeized gluons
are unknown in general, contrary to the planar limit case where the problem
becomes integrable. We consider a 4-gluon kernel for a finite number of colors
and define some simple toy models for the configuration space dynamics, which
are directly solvable with group theoretical methods. Then we study the
dependence of the spectrum of these models with respect to the number of colors
and make comparisons with the large limit case.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures, references update, to appear on EPJ
F1: An Eight Channel Time-to-Digital Converter Chip for High Rate Experiments
A new TDC chip has been developed for the COMPASS experiment at CERN. The resulting ASIC offers an unprecedented degree of flexibility and functionality. Its capability to handle highest hit and trigger input rates as well as its low power consumption makes it an ideal tool for future collider and fixed target experiments. First front-end boards equipped with the F1 chip have been used recently at testbeam experiments at CERN. A functional description and specification for this new TDC chip is presented.A new TDC chip has been developed for the COMPASS experiment at CERN. Strangeness Enhancement in and Interactions at SPS Energies
The systematics of strangeness enhancement is calculated using the HIJING and
VENUS models and compared to recent data on , and
collisions at CERN/SPS energies (). The HIJING model is used to
perform a {\em linear} extrapolation from to . VENUS is used to
estimate the effects of final state cascading and possible non-conventional
production mechanisms. This comparison shows that the large enhancement of
strangeness observed in collisions, interpreted previously as possible
evidence for quark-gluon plasma formation, has its origins in non-equilibrium
dynamics of few nucleon systems. % Strangeness enhancement %is therefore traced
back to the change in the production dynamics %from to minimum bias
and central collisions. A factor of two enhancement of at
mid-rapidity is indicated by recent data, where on the average {\em one}
projectile nucleon interacts with only {\em two} target nucleons. There appears
to be another factor of two enhancement in the light ion reaction relative
to , when on the average only two projectile nucleons interact with two
target ones.Comment: 29 pages, 8 figures in uuencoded postscript fil
Dynamics of open quantum systems
The coupling between the states of a system and the continuum into which it
is embedded, induces correlations that are especially large in the short time
scale. These correlations cannot be calculated by using a statistical or
perturbational approach. They are, however, involved in an approach describing
structure and reaction aspects in a unified manner. Such a model is the SMEC
(shell model embedded in the continuum). Some characteristic results obtained
from SMEC as well as some aspects of the correlations induced by the coupling
to the continuum are discussed.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figure
Baxter Q-operator and Separation of Variables for the open SL(2,R) spin chain
We construct the Baxter Q-operator and the representation of the Separated
Variables (SoV) for the homogeneous open SL(2,R) spin chain. Applying the
diagrammatical approach, we calculate Sklyanin's integration measure in the
separated variables and obtain the solution to the spectral problem for the
model in terms of the eigenvalues of the Q-operator. We show that the
transition kernel to the SoV representation is factorized into the product of
certain operators each depending on a single separated variable. As a
consequence, it has a universal pyramid-like form that has been already
observed for various quantum integrable models such as periodic Toda chain,
closed SL(2,R) and SL(2,C) spin chains.Comment: 29 pages, 9 figures, Latex styl
