    X-ray absorption spectroscopy study of energy transport in foil targets heated by PW laser pulses

    Absorption x-ray spectroscopy is proposed as a method for studying the heating of a solid-density matter excited by secondary xray radiation from a relativistic laser-produced plasma. The method was developed and applied to experiments involving thin silicon foils irradiated by 0.5–1.5 ps duration ultrahigh contrast laser pulses at intensities between 0.5×1020 and 2.5×1020 W/cm2 . The electron temperature of the material at the rear side of a target is estimated to be in the range of 140–300 eV. The diagnostic approach enables the diagnosis of warm dense matter states with low self-emissivity

    In recent years, the use of Raman and surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) for disease detection has grown. The motives for their increased use have commonlybeen attributed to their well-known benefits, such as the creation of narrow spectral bands that are characteristic of the molecular components present, their non-destructive method of analysis, and the sensitivity and specificity that they can confer. In this study, human blood samples were examined using SERS. The obtained results demonstrate that the proposed SERS technique is stable and has significant potential in clinical diagnosis applications.     The Supplement to vol. 6, 2016 of SCIRES-IT contains the result of CoCoNet (Towards COast to COast NETworks of marine protected areas, coupled with sea-based wind energy potential), a project of the EU Oceans of Tomorrow programme (http://www.coconet-fp7.eu). The European Union requires Open Access to the results of the projects resulting from its support to scientific advancement. This is in full accordance with the policy of SCIRES-IT, an eco-sustainable open–access journal, which joins the main principles of the Berlin Declaration on Open Access with the aims of the International Convention on Biological Diversity.
