    Neutral Pion Asymmetries at Intermediate Pseudorapidity in Transversely Polarized p + p Collisions at √ s = 200 GeV

    Among the unanswered questions pertaining to nucleon spin physics is the origin of large azimuthal asymmetries (AN ) found in π forward pseudorapidity, η, from high-energy transversely polarized p + p collisions. One possible explanation is offered by twist-3 parton distribution and fragmentation functions. In order to test these and other mechanisms, it is important to study how the asymmetry changes over a range of pion kinematics. The STAR Endcap Electromagnetic Calorimeter (EEMC) is the only RHIC detector with the ability to study AN for π available at intermediate pseudorapidity, 0.8 ≤ η ≤ 2.0. STAR recently published the first measurement of AN for π using data collected in 2006 with collision energy √ STAR collected a high-statistics dataset with transverse beam polarization at √ s = 200 GeV. This offers over a five-fold increase in integrated luminosity relative to the 2006 dataset and a chance to enhance the precision of the previous results. The primary objective of this study is to determine the quality of the data from 2012 and to estimate the final statistical uncertainty.Preliminary results from this study indicate a significant improvement over the 2006 results

    Measuring the speed of the conscious components of recognition memory: Remembering is faster than knowing.

    Three experiments investigated response times (RTs) for remember and know responses in recognition memory. RTs to remember responses were faster than RTs to know responses, regardless of whether the remember–know decision was preceded by an old/new decision (two-step procedure) or was made without a preceding old/new decision (one-step procedure). The finding of faster RTs for R responses was also found when remember–know decisions were made retrospectively. These findings are inconsistent with dual-process models of recognition memory, which predict that recollection is slower and more effortful than familiarity. Word frequency did not influence RTs, but remember responses were faster for words than for nonwords. We argue that the difference in RTs to remember and know responses reflects the time taken to make old/new decisions on the basis of the type of information activated at test

    Pelagic squid associationswith a warm-core eddy of the East Australian Current

    Cephalopods were sampled at night by midwater trawling in the upper 500 m in and near warm- core eddy F during summer. In all, 29 species (1019 specimens) were caught. Of the five dominant species, the squid Pterygioteuthis giardi and Brachioteuthis riisei were most numerous inside the eddy and Abraliopsis gilchristi and Pterygioteuthis gemmata had length-frequency distributions that were significantly larger outside than inside the eddy. A. gilchristi was also concentrated in warmer water and Pyroteuthis margaritifera was more common at 250 m than at shallower depths. Cluster analysis established a clear association of overall composition and relative abundances of cephalopod species with water temperature and location with respect to the eddy

    Evaluation of Temperature-Dependent Complex Refractive Indices of Supercooled Liquid Water Using Downwelling Radiance and In-Situ Cloud Measurements at South Pole

    Clouds have a large effect on the radiation budget and represent a major source of uncertainty in climate models. Supercooled liquid clouds can exist at temperatures as low as 235 K, and the radiative effect of these clouds depends on the complex refractive index (CRI) of liquid water. Laboratory measurements have demonstrated that the liquid-water CRI is temperature-dependent, but corroboration with field measurements is difficult. Here we present measurements of the downwelling infrared radiance and in-situ measurements of supercooled liquid water in a cloud at temperatures as low as 240 K, made at South Pole Station in 2001. These results demonstrate that including the temperature dependence of the liquid-water CRI is essential for accurate calculations of radiative transfer through supercooled liquid clouds. Furthermore, we show that when cloud properties are retrieved from infrared radiances (using the spectral range 500–1,200 cm−1) spurious ice may be retrieved if the 300 K CRI is used for cold liquid clouds (∼240 K). These results have implications for radiative transfer in climate models as well as for retrievals of cloud properties from infrared radiance spectra.publishedVersio

    Changes in Diet and Body Condition of Lake Whitefish in Southern Lake Michigan Associated with Changes in Benthos

    We evaluated the long‐term trends of the benthic macroinvertebrate community (1980–1999) and biological attributes of lake whitefish Coregonus clupeaformis (1985–1999) in southeastern Lake Michigan. We also determined what food types were important to lake whitefish in an area where the amphipod Diporeia had not yet declined in 1998 and how the diet of lake whitefish changed as Diporeia declined during 1999–2000. Zebra mussels Dreissena polymorpha invaded the study area in 1992; Diporeia began to decline in 1993 and was nearly absent by 1999. The body condition of lake whitefish decreased after 1993 and remained low thereafter. The length at age and weight at age of lake whitefish was lower in 1992–1999 than in 1985–1991. After declines of Diporeia off the city of Muskegon, Michigan, between 1998 and 1999–2000, the proportion of Diporeia in the diet by weight fell from 70% to 25% and the percent occurrence decreased from 81% to 45%. In contrast, the proportion of lake whitefish that ate other prey, such as Mysis relicta (an opossum shrimp), ostracods, oligochaetes, and zooplankton, increased in the same period. At sites south of Muskegon, where the density of Diporeia has been low since 1998, chironomids, zebra mussels, and fingernail clams (Shaeriidae family) were the most important diet items of lake whitefish. Decreases in body condition and growth are associated with the loss of the high‐energy prey resource Diporeia, the consumption of prey with lower energy content, such as zebra mussels, and possible density‐dependence. Commercial harvests of lake whitefish will probably decrease because of low body condition and growth.
