SPATIAL AND FEATURE ANALYSIS OF THE WHITING SLOUGH SITE (ElNs-10): AN AVONLEA PROCESSING SITE IN SOUTH-CENTRAL SASKATCHEWAN

This thesis discusses the overall function and description of features and activity areas for the Whiting Slough Site (ElNs-10). This is done by investigating the spatial relationships between various artifact groups to identify localized densities of activity. These artifact densities were then analyzed and interpreted to be specific activity areas within the larger processing events taking place at the site. The features found at the site were separated into various feature classes based on their attributes. In addition, the spatial relationship of these features to each other was assessed. The spatial analysis of the site employed ESRI’s ArcMap to assess and compare artifact density of different artifact groups. This facilitated identification of site function as well as identifying the specific areas of distinct processing events. As a result of this project the site was identified as an Avonlea processing site. However, this processing site has additional features that have not previously been seen in other Avonlea processing sites. There are a total of 43 different features that were discovered during excavation of the site. These are divided into four different feature types: bone-filled pits (39), hearths (2), a canid burial (1) and a soil stain (1). These features are accompanied by an additional seven potential bone-filled pits that were discovered during construction monitoring following excavation. These individual features combine to form two distinct ovoid feature groups that run parallel to one another. Potentially two more of these feature groups were partially unearthed during excavation and construction monitoring. These features are interpreted to be part of a drying rack. It is hypothesized within this thesis that these bone-filled pit features were created to counteract the difficulties with trying to anchor heavy loads of meat into the very loose sandy sediment that is present at the site. The Whiting Slough Site appears to be much different than any other Avonlea processing sites. The uniqueness of these features as well as the large amounts of artifacts, both faunal and lithic, make the Whiting Slough Site an interesting and important site for understanding the subsistence strategies and versatility of people within the Avonlea Phase

    Big Ben: The Gentle Rebel

With the University of Mississippi having a deep and somewhat negative history with racial tension, the sole purpose of this study was to figure out if Ben Williams, the first African American varsity football player experienced any issues with racism while he attended school. Over the years Williams has stated that no issues have come about because of his race. After interviewing Ben Williams and over 10 others for the thesis project documentary entitled The Ole Miss Black Athlete,” it can be predicted that Williams didn\u27t receive any racial tension on the campus of Ole Miss from the media or student body, faculty and staff. Although racial tensions were present at the time between whites and blacks, Williams never had issues because of his personality and athletic ability

Post-Secondary Success In Relation To Transition Programs

    Get PDF
The general topic of this qualitative case study was post-secondary success in relation to transition programs, which was assessed by looking at evidence-based practices, employability frameworks, and guidepost to success. The findings from this research can identify current gaps about this topic by analyzing previous research, looking at existing theories, or by identifying practices that are not effective. Research in this area suggests there is still a way to go despite tremendous focus on providing more opportunities for individuals with disabilities to gain employment in areas of interest. Previous studies about this topic are limited because there is not a substantial body of literature about the efficacy of transition model. Furthermore, each school district may or may not institute the model the same way. Studies exploring the efficacy of the transition model would assess how the program is being implemented (i.e., what evidence-based practices, employability frameworks, and guidepost to success are being implemented with fidelity). Comprehending employability includes considering the many aspects and various ways in which it is assessed and evaluated, the basic applicable skills, and the competencies required for employment opportunities. It is important to look at employability through multiple lenses and thoroughly assess the study. It is not sufficient to consider only whether someone has a job. It is also important to look at a person’s happiness related to their job and place of employment, success in their job, opportunity for growth in their industry, whether they want their specific job, and opportunities for developing relationships with co-workers

Assessing Preventative Lifestyle Interventions in the Filipino-American Population to Decrease Risk of Type II Diabetes

    Get PDF
Background Type II Diabetes is a concerning global health issue and must be addressed. Given the unfortunate risks of T2D in the Filipino populations, prevention efforts must begin in this select population. There is strong empirical support for utilizing lifestyle interventions such as nutrition and physical exercise to prevent these diseases in adults; but it is not clear whether the same holds true for Filipino populations. Objective This thesis examines lifestyle management efforts such as weight reduction, family support, nutrition changes, and physical activity to prevent type 2 diabetes in Filipino-Americans. Methods The methods of the thesis will present a literature review of primary research relating to preventative measures to decrease risk of T2D in the Filipino population. This paper will also include articles from the National Library of Medicine, randomized control trials, cohort studies, and nursing peer-reviewed journals to supplement content for Type II Diabetes lifestyle prevention. Also, the proposal will analyze which interventions benefit the two control groups through a T-test. It will analyze the pre and post outcomes of each lifestyle intervention. Keywords: Diabetes, Risk factors, Lifestyle interventions, Filipin

The Evolutionary Biology of Vision in \u3ci\u3eDaphnia\u3c/i\u3e

Eyes have attracted the attention of evolutionary biologist since the field’s infancy. In On the Origin of Species, in fact, Darwin famously remarked on the proposition that natural selection could engineer the eye, saying “[it is] absurd in the highest possible degree.” Though, he goes on to explain, beautifully and simply, how his theory of evolution by natural selection could produce such an organ. Indeed, eyes are remarkable examples of complex information acquisition systems that have evolved from simple beginnings. Eyes allow animals to extract environmental information from light, which informs physiological and behavioral responses to resources, predation, and mates. The morphological and physiological features of eyes define the absolute bounds of visual capabilities. These characteristics of eyes highlight why they are particularly interesting from an evolutionary perspective: variation affects what and how environmental information can be collected and processed, thereby potentially altering many of the animal’s ecological interactions. While a rich literature has documented myriad facets of eye evolution, there remain many areas that merit more investigation. The aim of my thesis is to broaden our understanding of the evolution of vision by exploring three related, yet different, aspects using the ecological model organism, Daphnia. I present a study that examines the ecological factors that potentially influence eye morphology. Second, I present a study that demonstrates fitness variation associated with eye diameter, and pair these observations with information on genetic variation of eye diameter. Lastly, I present a study evaluating the evolution of opsins—the gene largely responsible for vision—in Daphnia

Detection of Psilocybin Mushroom Analogs in Chocolate: Incorporating Current Events into the Undergraduate Teaching Laboratory

In this experiment, tryptamine is used as a psilocin analog and is dispersed onto a Fisher brand cellulose laboratory sponge to simulate dehydrated mushrooms. The resulting “mushroom” material is ground, molded into chocolate, and presented to student groups for real-world and applied analyses. Students isolate the tryptamine from the chocolate using their knowledge of drug chemistry, solubility, pH, extractions, etc. Qualitative analysis is conducted by comparison to standards (Thin Layer Chromatography or Gas Chromatography) and quantitative analysis is conducted by Gas Chromatography using the method of internal standards

This paper introduces a new capability for performing the vicarious radiometric calibration of high, medium and low spatial resolution sensors. The SPecular Array Radiometric Calibration (SPARC) method employs convex mirrors to create calibration targets for deriving absolute calibration coefficients of Earth remote sensing systems in the solar reflective spectrum.17 The combination of these mirror arrays with a targeting station is the basis for a new, on-demand commercial calibration network called FLARE
