Interaction of topological solitons with defects: using a nontrivial metric
By including potential into the flat metric, we study interaction of
sine-Gordon soliton with potentials. We will show numerically that while the
soliton-barrier system shows fully classical behaviour, the soliton-well system
demonstrates non-classical behaviour. In particular, solitons with low
velocities are trapped in the well and emit energy radiation.Comment: 10 pages, 11 figure
Triggered massive-star formation on the borders of Galactic HII regions. III. Star formation at the periphery of Sh2-219
Context. Massive-star formation triggered by the expansion of HII regions.
Aims. To understand if sequential star formation is taking place at the
periphery of the HII region Sh2-219. Methods. We present 12CO(2-1) line
observations of this region, obtained at the IRAM 30-m telescope (Pico Veleta,
Spain). Results. In the optical, Sh2-219 is spherically symmetric around its
exciting star; furthermore it is surrounded along three quarters of its
periphery by a ring of atomic hydrogen. This spherical symmetry breaks down at
infrared and millimetre wavelengths. A molecular cloud of about 2000\msol lies
at the southwestern border of Sh2-219, in the HI gap. Two molecular
condensations, elongated along the ionization front, probably result from the
interaction between the expanding HII region and the molecular cloud. In this
region of interaction there lies a cluster containing many highly reddened
stars, as well as a massive star exciting an ultracompact HII region. More
surprisingly, the brightest parts of the molecular cloud form a `chimney',
perpendicular to the ionization front. This chimney is closed at its south-west
extremity by H-alpha walls, thus forming a cavity. The whole structure is 7.5
pc long. A luminous H-alpha emission-line star, lying at one end of the chimney
near the ionization front, may be responsible for this structure. Confrontation
of the observations with models of HII region evolution shows that Sh2-219 is
probably 10^5 yr old. The age and origin of the near-IR cluster observed on the
border of Sh2-219 remain unknown.Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures. To be published in A&
Phase instabilities in hexagonal patterns
The general form of the amplitude equations for a hexagonal pattern including
spatial terms is discussed. At the lowest order we obtain the phase equation
for such patterns. The general expression of the diffusion coefficients is
given and the contributions of the new spatial terms are analysed in this
paper. From these coefficients the phase stability regions in a hexagonal
pattern are determined. In the case of Benard-Marangoni instability our results

Evidence for virtual Compton scattering from the proton
In virtual Compton scattering an electron is scattered off a nucleon such that the nucleon emits a photon. We show that these events can be selected experimentally, and present the first evidence for virtual Compton scattering from the proton in data obtained at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The angular and energy dependence of the data is well described by a calculation that includes the coherent sum of electron and proton radiation
Constraints on the distance to SGR 1806-20 from HI absorption
The giant flare detected from the magnetar SGR 1806-20 on 2004 December 27
had a fluence more than 100 times higher than the only two other SGR flares
ever recorded. Whereas the fluence is independent of distance, an estimate for
the luminosity of the burst depends on the source's distance, which has
previously been argued to be ~15 kpc. The burst produced a bright radio
afterglow, against which Cameron et al. (2005) have measured an HI absorption
spectrum. This has been used to propose a revised distance to SGR 1806-20 of
between 6.4 and 9.8 kpc. Here we analyze this absorption spectrum, and compare
it both to HI emission data from the Southern Galactic Plane Survey and to
archival 12-CO survey data. We confirm ~6 kpc, as a likely lower limit on the
distance to SGR 1806-20, but argue that it is difficult to place an upper limit
on the distance to SGR 1806-20 from the HI data currently available. The
previous value of ~15 kpc thus remains the best estimate of the distance to the

High-Redshift Dust Obscured Galaxies: A Morphology-Spectral Energy Distribution Connection Revealed by Keck Adaptive Optics
A simple optical to mid-IR color selection, R – [24]>14, i.e., f_ν(24 μm)/f_ν(R) ≳ 1000, identifies highly dust obscured galaxies (DOGs) with typical redshifts of z ~ 2 ± 0.5. Extreme mid-IR luminosities (L_(IR) > 10^(12-14)) suggest that DOGs are powered by a combination of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and star formation, possibly driven by mergers. In an effort to compare their photometric properties with their rest-frame optical morphologies, we obtained high-spatial resolution (0."05-0."1) Keck Adaptive Optics K'-band images of 15 DOGs. The images reveal a wide range of morphologies, including small exponential disks (eight of 15), small ellipticals (four of 15), and unresolved sources (two of 15). One particularly diffuse source could not be classified because of low signal-to-noise ratio. We find a statistically significant correlation between galaxy concentration and mid-IR luminosity, with the most luminous DOGs exhibiting higher concentration and smaller physical size. DOGs with high concentration also tend to have spectral energy distributions (SEDs) suggestive of AGN activity. Thus, central AGN light may be biasing the morphologies of the more luminous DOGs to higher concentration. Conversely, more diffuse DOGs tend to show an SED shape suggestive of star formation. 1420 MHz Continuum Absorption Towards Extragalactic Sources in the Galactic Plane
We present a 21-cm emission-absorption study towards extragalactic sources in
the Canadian Galactic Plane Survey (CGPS). We have analyzed HI spectra towards
437 sources with S > 150 mJy, giving us a source density of 0.6 sources per
square degree at arcminute resolution. We present the results of a first
analysis of the HI temperatures, densities, and feature statistics. Particular
emphasis is placed on 5 features with observed spin temperatures below 40 K. We
find most spin temperatures in the range from 40 K to 300 K. A simple HI
two-component model constrains the bulk of the cold component to temperatures
(T_c) between 40 K and 100 K. T_c peaks in the Perseus arm region and clearly
drops off with Galactocentric radius, R, beyond that. The HI density follows
this trend, ranging from a local value of 0.4 cm^{-3} to less than 0.1 cm^{-3}
at R = 20 kpc. We find that HI emission alone on average traces about 75% of
the total HI column density, as compared to the total inferred by the emission
and absorption. Comparing the neutral hydrogen absorption to CO emission no
correlation is found in general, but all strong CO emission is accompanied by a
visible HI spectral feature. Finally, the number of spectral HI absorption

Decay of superfluid currents in the interacting one-dimensional Bose gas
We examine the superfluid properties of a 1D Bose gas in a ring trap based on
the model of Lieb and Liniger. While the 1D Bose gas has nonclassical
rotational inertia and exhibits quantization of velocities, the metastability
of currents depends sensitively on the strength of interactions in the gas: the
stronger the interactions, the faster the current decays. It is shown that the
Landau critical velocity is zero in the thermodynamic limit due to the first
supercurrent state, which has zero energy and finite probability of excitation.
We calculate the energy dissipation rate of ring currents in the presence of
