    Building the Coursestars Brand

    Get PDF
The main purpose of this project was to build the brand of Course Stars, a small tutoring business based in Illinois. This brand building was done through Facebook and Instagram, and the project lasted from November 2019 to March 2020. In that time, the analytics from Facebook and Instagram were tracked and analyzed. While there was a slight increase in the amount of interactions from the sites combined, there’s still few followers on Instagram. Marketing on social media is generally helpful, but in this project it did not make a large difference.https://digitalcommons.imsa.edu/intern_reports_2020/1029/thumbnail.jp

Effects of Coping Styles Among Racial/Ethnic Minority Emerging Adults Who Experienced Trauma

    Get PDF
This quantitative study investigated the coping styles of racial/ethnic minorities who have experienced trauma, such as childhood trauma and racial discrimination. Endler and Parker\u27s multidimensional interaction model of stress, anxiety, and coping served as the theoretical framework. The research questions addressed whether there are coping style differences by race/ethnicity, childhood trauma, racial discrimination, and a combination of the variables. An online questionnaire consisting of measures of coping, childhood trauma, and racial discrimination was completed by 116 participants. Due to a small number of non-African American/Black participants, Research Questions 1 and 3 could not be tested for lack of sufficient sample size. Based on the results for Research Questions 2 and 4, emotion-oriented coping had a negative association with childhood trauma, and emotion-oriented coping styles had a positive association with racial discrimination. Results thus indicated that childhood trauma experiences were minimally related to the coping style preferences of African American/Black individuals who had experienced racial discrimination and were likely to use an emotion-oriented coping style. The study also indicated a positive association between task-oriented coping and avoidance-oriented coping and a negative association between childhood trauma and racial discrimination. The results suggested that the more task-oriented coping experienced by African American/Black individuals, the more avoidance-oriented coping experienced, and the more childhood trauma experienced, the less racial discrimination reported. This research is significant for mental health professionals seeking to understand the coping styles of racial/ethnic minorities leading to positive social change

The Effects of Trunk Fat on Endothelial Function in African American Women

African Americans (AA), both adults and adolescents, have increased mortality from most of the diseases associated with metabolic syndrome and Endothelial Dysfunction including: myocardial infraction, stroke, and hypertension. Recent research has shown that there is a close link between endothelial function and insulin sensitivity in both normotensive and hypertensive subjects. This is important because African Americans are more frequently insulin resistant and display less mediated brachial artery vasodilation compared to Caucasians. The study took healthy, AA women ages 18-45 and grouped them into two main categories based on their Body Mass Index (BMI): lean/ insulin dependent (BMI\u3c25) and obese/insulin resistant (BMI\u3e30). There were two main phases of the study, requiring four sets of measurements from each patient. Phase I was a cross-sectional comparison of endothelial function, adipokines, insulin resistance, inflammatory state, oxidative stress, and circulating endothelial progenitor cells in the two groups of AA women. Phase II was an 8-week randomized controlled trial of the effects of the DASH-type diet on endothelial function, oxidative stress, and endothelial progenitor cells. Measurements of trunk fat were done using the Hologic Discovery QDR densitometer. Coefficient of variation for repeat measurement is 1.0% and correlation of percent body fat between fan beams and hydro densitometry is 0.91. High-frequency ultrasound was used to obtain B-mode images of the left brachial artery in the longitudinal section 2cm above the antecubital crease to measure endothelial function. Higher trunk fat percentages create greater amounts of oxidative stress and inflammation on the cells, causing a decrease in endothelial function and repair

Beside the Seaside. The archaeology of the twentieth-century English seaside holiday experience: a phenomenological context.

    Get PDF
A recent survey commissioned by English Heritage highlights the rich cultural history of the traditional English seaside resort (Brodie and Winter 2007). Emerging in the eighteenth century, these towns grew in significance before the advent of cheaper continental holidays in the 1960s signalled their demise. Nevertheless they retain an affectionate place within English social memory, and are in their own right distinctive maritime communities. Using an archaeological case study and a broadly phenomenological approach this contribution analyses the experience of the resort holiday through reference to place, space and materiality. Further, it seeks to situate the English seaside resort, as a functionally distinctive post-medieval urban and maritime phenomenon, within a global context of the archaeology of tourism

Should people be more educated on Type 1 Diabetes?

    Get PDF
Many people know about so many diseases that are happening in the world today yet Type 1 Diabetes remains a mystery. Type I Diabetes (TD1) is an autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone that enables people to get enough energy from food. Research on this topic is important because many children and young adults are diagnosed with the disease yet the education is lacking
