    Complex quests towards calm - a co-produced journey

    This study explores the influence of the process of co-production in peer-led, self-help groups on mental health. People working in the mental health realm seem to know what co-production is all about; people receiving treatment in the mental health realm do not. Co-production has become something people and organisations say ‘was being done’ when it may not actually have been. This study explores the experiences of those people, generating new knowledge and the development of a conceptual framework to support the practice of group focussed co-production. This addresses a gap in existing knowledge of co-production in a group situation.To enable the study, a new co-production group was established. The volunteers, termed ‘collaborators’ needed for the co-production group were recruited. The co-production group ran for six months after which a series of unstructured interviews enabled data to be gathered. Interview data was analysed using an adapted narrative/thematic method (Floersch, Longhofer, Kranke, & Townsend, 2010) where the thematic (Braun & Clarke, 2006) element was exchanged for framework analysis (Spencer, Ritchie, & O'Connor, 2003).Six overarching themes emerged which included: being individuals; mental health; professionalism; bad stuff; being in a group; personal development. The need for, role and training of professionals in co-production will change. Professionals in co-production situations in future will find themselves as facilitators and guides instead of being deliverers of service.Like-minded people who experience mental health problems were keen to come together to take control over their mental health by co-producing services with peers experiencing similar difficulties.The study illuminated the limited availability of work on co-production, how literature of co-production is in its infancy. The subjects for future study include how ‘Psy’ professions work in co-produced situations and how the process acts on perceptions of mental health

    Genetic Evidence of African Slavery at the Beginning of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade

    An archaeological excavation in Valle da Gafaria (Lagos, Portugal), revealed two contiguous burial places outside the medieval city walls, dating from the 15th–17th centuries AD: one was interpreted as a Leprosarium cemetery and the second as an urban discard deposit, where signs of violent, unceremonious burials suggested that these remains may belong to slaves captured in Africa by the Portuguese. We obtained random short autosomal sequence reads from seven individuals: two from the latter site and five from the Leprosarium and used these to call SNP identities and estimate ancestral affinities with modern reference data. The Leprosarium site samples were less preserved but gave some probability of both African and European ancestry. The two discard deposit burials each gave African affinity signals, which were further refined toward modern West African or Bantu genotyped samples. These data from distressed burials illustrate an African contribution to a low status stratum of Lagos society at a time when this port became a hub of the European trade in African slaves which formed a precursor to the transatlantic transfer of millions

    Morphological characterisation of unstained and intact tissue microarchitecture by x-ray computed micro- and nano-tomography

    Characterisation and quantification of tissue structures is limited by sectioning-induced artefacts and by the difficulties of visualising and segmenting 3D volumes. Here we demonstrate that, even in the absence of X-ray contrast agents, X-ray computed microtomography (microCT) and nanotomography (nanoCT) can circumvent these problems by rapidly resolving compositionally discrete 3D tissue regions (such as the collagen-rich adventitia and elastin-rich lamellae in intact rat arteries) which in turn can be segmented due to their different X-ray opacities and morphologies. We then establish, using X-ray tomograms of both unpressurised and pressurised arteries that intra-luminal pressure not only increases lumen cross-sectional area and straightens medial elastic lamellae but also induces profound remodelling of the adventitial layer. Finally we apply microCT to another human organ (skin) to visualise the cell-rich epidermis and extracellular matrix-rich dermis and to show that conventional histological and immunohistochemical staining protocols are compatible with prior X-ray exposure. As a consequence we suggest that microCT could be combined with optical microscopy to characterise the 3D structure and composition of archival paraffin embedded biological materials and of mechanically stressed dynamic tissues such as the heart, lungs and tendons

    Paging through history: parchment as a reservoir of ancient DNA for next generation sequencing.

    Parchment represents an invaluable cultural reservoir. Retrieving an additional layer of information from these abundant, dated livestock-skins via the use of ancient DNA (aDNA) sequencing has been mooted by a number of researchers. However, prior PCR-based work has indicated that this may be challenged by cross-individual and cross-species contamination, perhaps from the bulk parchment preparation process. Here we apply next generation sequencing to two parchments of seventeenth and eighteenth century northern English provenance. Following alignment to the published sheep, goat, cow and human genomes, it is clear that the only genome displaying substantial unique homology is sheep and this species identification is confirmed by collagen peptide mass spectrometry. Only 4% of sequence reads align preferentially to a different species indicating low contamination across species. Moreover, mitochondrial DNA sequences suggest an upper bound of contamination at 5%. Over 45% of reads aligned to the sheep genome, and even this limited sequencing exercise yield 9 and 7% of each sampled sheep genome post filtering, allowing the mapping of genetic affinity to modern British sheep breeds. We conclude that parchment represents an excellent substrate for genomic analyses of historical livestock

    A network-based dynamical ranking system for competitive sports

    From the viewpoint of networks, a ranking system for players or teams in sports is equivalent to a centrality measure for sports networks, whereby a directed link represents the result of a single game. Previously proposed network-based ranking systems are derived from static networks, i.e., aggregation of the results of games over time. However, the score of a player (or team) fluctuates over time. Defeating a renowned player in the peak performance is intuitively more rewarding than defeating the same player in other periods. To account for this factor, we propose a dynamic variant of such a network-based ranking system and apply it to professional men's tennis data. We derive a set of linear online update equations for the score of each player. The proposed ranking system predicts the outcome of the future games with a higher accuracy than the static counterparts.Comment: 6 figure

    Collapse of a Bose gas: kinetic approach

    We have analytically explored temperature dependence of critical number of particles for the collapse of a harmonically trapped attractively interacting Bose gas below the condensation point by introducing a kinetic approach within the Hartree-Fock approximation.
