Multiple-Scale Analysis of the Quantum Anharmonic Oscillator

    Get PDF
Conventional weak-coupling perturbation theory suffers from problems that arise from resonant coupling of successive orders in the perturbation series. Multiple-scale perturbation theory avoids such problems by implicitly performing an infinite reordering and resummation of the conventional perturbation series. Multiple-scale analysis provides a good description of the classical anharmonic oscillator. Here, it is extended to study the Heisenberg operator equations of motion for the quantum anharmonic oscillator. The analysis yields a system of nonlinear operator differential equations, which is solved exactly. The solution provides an operator mass renormalization of the theory.Comment: 12 pages, Revtex, no figures, available through anonymous ftp from ftp://euclid.tp.ph.ic.ac.uk/papers/ or on WWW at http://euclid.tp.ph.ic.ac.uk/Papers/papers_95-6_.htm

Probing Polarized Parton Distributions with Meson Photoproduction

Polarization asymmetries in photoproduction of high transverse momentum mesons are a flavor sensitive way to measure the polarized quark distributions. We calculate the expected asymmetries in several models, and find that the asymmetries are significant and also significantly different from model to model. Suitable data may come as a by-product of deep inelastic experiments to measure g1g_1 or from dedicated experiments.Comment: RevTeX, 5 pages, 5 postscript figures; minor corrections made, references adde

Measuring Polarized Gluon and Quark Distributions with Meson Photoproduction

We calculate polarization asymmetries in photoproduction of high transverse momentum mesons, focusing on charged pions, considering the direct, fragmentation, and resolved photon processes. The results at very high meson momentum measure the polarized quark distributions and are sensitive to differences among the existing models. The results at moderate meson momentum are sensitive to the polarized gluon distribution and can provide a good way to measure it. Suitable data may come as a by-product of deep inelastic experiments to measure g1g_1 or from dedicated experiments.Comment: RevTeX, 11 pages, 13 postscript figures; changes made in response to the referee's comment

Joint Extraction of m_s and V_us from Hadronic Tau Decays

    Get PDF
We study the simultaneous determination of m_s and V_us from flavor-breaking hadronic tau decay sum rules using weights designed to bring under better control problems associated with the slow convergence of the relevant D=2 OPE series. Much improved stability and consistency is found as compared to the results of conventional analyses based on the ``(k,0) spectral weights''. Results for m_s are in excellent agreement with those of recent strange scalar and strange pseudoscalar sum rule analyses, as well as recent lattice analyses, while those for V_us agree within errors with the output from recent lattice-based Gamma[K_{mu 2}]/Gamma[pi_{mu 2}] and K_{\ell 3}-based analyses. Very significant error reductions are shown to be expected, especially for V_us, once the improved strange spectral data from the B factory experiments becomes available.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figure
