The Educational Trajectories of Second-Generation Students Towards Higher Education: Motivations, Family’s Role and “Institutional” Bias

Nowadays Italy is experiencing a structural, stable and multigenerational migratory presence in which new generations have been increasingly gaining access to the highest social and educational levels, including university. The educational choices young people make are influenced by their social, cultural and economic background as well as by their parents or other significant adults\u2019 cultural background. This paper aims to examine the challenges and the resources faced by young immigrants when they continue to university. Despite the fact that several researchers explored the presence of second-generation students in primary and secondary schools, the state of research on second- generation students enrolled in Italian Universities is still very poor. After a brief focus on the presence of second-generation students within the Italian university system, the paper will highlight the case of the University of Bologna. Through research that was completed employing a variety of methods, including 537 questionnaires and 30 interviews, the paper aims to explain, through the words of the interviewees, the students\u2019 motivations for the choice of long-term educational paths and the role played by family, teachers and educational institutions in inspiring that choice

Helical axis analysis to quantify humeral kinematics during shoulder rotation.

The aim of this study is to quantify the behavior of humeral rotations using helical axis (HA) parameters in three different conditions. A total of 19 people without shoulder symptoms participated in the experiment. Shoulder kinematics was measured with an optoelectric motion capture system. The subjects performed three different full range rotations of the shoulder. The shoulder movements were analyzed with the HA technique. Four parameters were extracted from the HA of the shoulder during three different full-range rotations: range of movement (RoM), mean angle (MA), axis dispersion (MDD), and distance of their center from the shoulder (D). No significant differences were observed in the RoM for each condition between left and right side. The MA of the axis was significantly lower on the right side compared to the left in each of the three conditions. The MDD was also lower for the right side compared to the left side in each of the three conditions.The four parameters proposed for the analysis of shoulder kinematics showed to be promising indicators of shoulder instability.Peer reviewe

Nutritional Issues in Head and Neck Cancer Patients

The purpose of this paper is to update the oncologist on the correct approach to the nutritional care of the head and neck cancer patient. Recent scientific contributions on this issue, with a special emphasis on international guidelines and randomised clinical trials (RCTs), are reviewed. The following points are noteworthy: 1. Despite the advances in early diagnosis and modern treatment of head and neck cancer, this tumour still ranks first regarding frequency and severity of weight loss, both at the clinical presentation and during the therapy. 2. This is due to the combination of poor alimentation because of the tumour mass localization, as well as of the presence of an inflammatory response which furtherly drives catabolism. 3. Several studies have shown a very limited role for a dietary counselling unless it includes oral nutritional supplements which are protein or omega-3 fatty acid enriched. 4. A parental nutritional supplementation could represent an acceptable short-term alternative. 5. Long-term nutritional support relies on the use of percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG), whereas the role of a prophylactic or "a la demande" PEG is still unsettled and requires further investigations. In conclusion, the nutritional approach using specific formulas and the appropriate route of administration should be part of the therapeutic armamentarium of the modern oncologist

Cybersecurity Impacts of the Covid-19 Pandemic in Italy

The Covid-19 pandemic has pushed companies to the extensive use of digital services, to implement home working and provide online services to people in lockdown. As a consequence, it is interesting to study how this has affected the number, kind and distribution of cybersecurity attacks. This paper gives an empirical evaluation of the cybersecurity attacks at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic in Italy, based on data collected from the questionnaires of the annual Digital Attacks Observatory. It shows that the overall number of attacks has not increased, but attacks have affected smaller companies than before. This can be explained with the fact that the Italian industrial scenario is mostly populated by small and medium enterprises, that have been obliged to a quick reconversion of their IT systems and typically lack the necessary cybersecurity culture
