Laboratory Tests of Gravitational Physics Using a Cryogenic Torsion Pendulum
Progress and plans are reported for a program of gravitational physics
experiments using cryogenic torsion pendula undergoing large amplitude
torsional oscillation. The program includes a UC Irvine project to measure the
gravitational constant G and joint UC Irvine - U. Washington projects to test
the gravitational inverse square law at a range of about 10 cm and to test the

Post impact evaluation of an E-learning cross-infection control CD-ROM provided to all general dental practitioners in England
Aim To carry out a post-impact evaluation of a cross-infection control CD-ROM, developed for NHS dental teams as a continuing professional development e-learning tool. The program was commissioned by the Department of Health and developed by a project team through the UK Committee of Postgraduate Dental Deans. The Dental Practice Boardhad originally sent one copy of the CD-ROM to each dental practice in England in 2004. Method A quantitative statistical analysis of the results of 326 online respondents to the learning package and a survey of 118 dental practitioners drawn from the Dental Practice Board database. Results Practitioners felt the CD-ROM in this instance was well designed and appropriate for their needs. It is inclusive and accessible to a wide range of dental professionals including nurses and hygienists. Conclusions This form of continuing professional development is popular with dental practitioners, although it should not be the only form of continuing professional development available. However, whilst the project was generally regarded as successful, there were problems with the distribution of the CD-ROM. This suggests that anonline resource should be made available in the future
Overcoming the Challenges Associated with Image-based Mapping of Small Bodies in Preparation for the OSIRIS-REx Mission to (101955) Bennu
The OSIRIS-REx Asteroid Sample Return Mission is the third mission in NASA's
New Frontiers Program and is the first U.S. mission to return samples from an
asteroid to Earth. The most important decision ahead of the OSIRIS-REx team is
the selection of a prime sample-site on the surface of asteroid (101955) Bennu.
Mission success hinges on identifying a site that is safe and has regolith that
can readily be ingested by the spacecraft's sampling mechanism. To inform this
mission-critical decision, the surface of Bennu is mapped using the OSIRIS-REx
Camera Suite and the images are used to develop several foundational data
products. Acquiring the necessary inputs to these data products requires
observational strategies that are defined specifically to overcome the
challenges associated with mapping a small irregular body. We present these
strategies in the context of assessing candidate sample-sites at Bennu
according to a framework of decisions regarding the relative safety,
sampleability, and scientific value across the asteroid's surface. To create
data products that aid these assessments, we describe the best practices
developed by the OSIRIS-REx team for image-based mapping of irregular small
bodies. We emphasize the importance of using 3D shape models and the ability to
work in body-fixed rectangular coordinates when dealing with planetary surfaces
that cannot be uniquely addressed by body-fixed latitude and longitude.Comment: 31 pages, 10 figures, 2 table
The views of older women towards mammographic screening: a qualitative and quantitative study
Purpose: Mammographic screening has improved breast cancer survival in the screened age group. This improved survival has not been seen in older women (>70 years) where screening uptake is low. This study explores the views, knowledge and attitudes of older women towards screening.
Methods: Women (>70) were interviewed about breast screening. Interview findings informed the development of a questionnaire which was sent to 1000 women (>70) to quantify their views regarding screening.
Results: Twenty-six women were interviewed and a questionnaire designed. The questionnaire response rate was 48.3% (479/992). Over half (52.9%, 241/456) of respondents were unaware they could request mammography by voluntary self-referral and were unaware of how to arrange this. Most (81.5% 383/470) had not attended breast screening since turning 70. Most (75.6%, 343/454) felt screening was beneficial and would attend if invited. Most, (90.1%, 412/457) felt screening should be offered to all women regardless of age or health.
Conclusions: There is a lack of knowledge about screening in older women. The majority felt that invitation to screening should be extended to the older age group regardless of age or health. The current under-utilised system of voluntary self referral is not supported by older women
Investigation of Primordial Black Hole Bursts using Interplanetary Network Gamma-ray Bursts
The detection of a gamma-ray burst (GRB) in the solar neighborhood would have
very important implications for GRB phenomenology. The leading theories for
cosmological GRBs would not be able to explain such events. The final bursts of
evaporating Primordial Black Holes (PBHs), however, would be a natural
explanation for local GRBs. We present a novel technique that can constrain the
distance to gamma-ray bursts using detections from widely separated,
non-imaging spacecraft. This method can determine the actual distance to the
burst if it is local. We applied this method to constrain distances to a sample
of 36 short duration GRBs detected by the Interplanetary Network (IPN) that
show observational properties that are expected from PBH evaporations. These
bursts have minimum possible distances in the 10^13-10^18 cm (7-10^5 AU) range,
consistent with the expected PBH energetics and with a possible origin in the
solar neighborhood, although none of the bursts can be unambiguously
demonstrated to be local. Assuming these bursts are real PBH events, we
estimate lower limits on the PBH burst evaporation rate in the solar

Integrating the Fermi Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor into the 3rd Interplanetary Network
We are integrating the Fermi Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor (GBM) into the
Interplanetary Network (IPN) of Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) detectors. With the GBM,
the IPN will comprise 9 experiments. This will 1) assist the Fermi team in
understanding and reducing their systematic localization uncertainties, 2)
reduce the sizes of the GBM and Large Area Telescope (LAT) error circles by 1
to 4 orders of magnitude, 3) facilitate the identification of GRB sources with
objects found by ground- and space-based observatories at other wavelengths,
from the radio to very high energy gamma-rays, 4) reduce the uncertainties in
associating some LAT detections of high energy photons with GBM bursts, and 5)
facilitate searches for non-electromagnetic GRB counterparts, particularly
neutrinos and gravitational radiation. We present examples and demonstrate the
synergy between Fermi and the IPN. This is a Fermi Cycle 2 Guest Investigator

What do people do with porn? qualitative research into the consumption, use and experience of pornography and other sexually explicit media
This article reviews qualitative research into the consumption of pornography and other sexually explicit media emerging from a range of subject areas. Taking a critique of quantitative methods and a focus on measuring sexual effects and attitudes as a starting point, it considers the proposition that qualitative work is more suited to an examination of the complex social, cultural and political constructions of sexuality. Examining studies into the way men, women and young people see, experience, and use explicit media texts, the article identifies the key findings that have emerged. Qualitative work shows that sexuality explicit media texts are experienced and understood in a variety of ways and evoke strong and often contradictory reactions, not all of which are represented in public debates about pornography. These texts function in a range of different ways, depending on context; as a source of knowledge, a resource for intimate practices, a site for identity construction, and an occasion for performing gender and sexuality. The article reviews these studies and their findings, identifying what they suggest about directions for future research, both in terms of developing methodology and refining approaches to sexuality and media consumption.</p
A Ruthenium(II) Complex as a Luminescent Probe for DNA Mismatches and Abasic Sites
[Ru(bpy)_2(BNIQ)]^(2+) (BNIQ = Benzo[c][1,7]naphthyridine-1-isoquinoline), which incorporates the sterically expansive BNIQ ligand, is a highly selective luminescent probe for DNA mismatches and abasic sites, possessing a 500-fold higher binding affinity toward these destabilized regions relative to well-matched base pairs. As a result of this higher binding affinity, the complex exhibits an enhanced steady-state emission in the presence of DNA duplexes containing a single base mismatch or abasic site compared to fully well-matched DNA. Luminescence quenching experiments with Cu(phen)_2^(2+) and [Fe(CN)_6]^(3–) implicate binding of the complex to a mismatch from the minor groove via metalloinsertion. The emission response of the complex to different single base mismatches, binding preferentially to the more destabilized mismatches, is also consistent with binding by metalloinsertion. This work shows that high selectivity toward destabilized regions in duplex DNA can be achieved through the rational design of a complex with a sterically expansive aromatic ligand
