Perceptions and correlates of peer-victimization and bullying
The experiences of peer-victimization and bullying are often treated empirically as though they are conceptually indistinct. Both involve repeated aggression,but definitions of bullying additionally emphasize the importance of aggressor intent and imbalance of power between the aggressor and the victim (Olweus, 1978; Whitney & Smith, 1993). The present study aimed to examine the extent to which peer-victimization and bullying are empirically similar. The sample comprised 1,429 pupils (50.2% male) aged between 8 and 13 years attending mainstream Scottish schools. Self-report questionnaire assessing peer-victimization and bullying, copingstrategy use (WCCL: Hunter, 2000), situational appraisal and depressive symptomatology (Birleson, 1981). Almost one-third (30.7%) of pupils reported experiencing peer-victimization, and of these 38.1% (11.7% of whole sample) were categorized as victims of bullying. Victims of bullying perceived higher levels of threat and lower levels of perceived control. They also reported using more Wishful Thinking and Social Support coping strategies, but did not differ on Problem Focused coping. Bullied pupils also reported higher levels of depressive symptomatology. Peer-victimization and bullying appear to be qualitatively different experiences for children and adolescents, with bullying being the more serious phenomenon
Human Performance Assessments in Cadet Populations
This study assessed potential physiological differences between the Ranger Challenge (RC) Competition team and junior year cadets in an Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program. The method included: RC (m = 11, f = 2) and junior year cadets (m = 7, f = 3) were assessed in the following areas: 1) quickness and agility (5-10-5 shuttle run), 2) total-body power (standing broad jump), and 3) grip strength (hand grip dynamometry) assessed. The 5-10-5 shuttle run was performed twice (opening once to the left and once to the right). The standing broad jump required that cadets stand with their toes behind a line, perform a maximum of three preparatory movements, triple extend their knees, hips, and ankles while using their upper body to propel them as far forward as possible. After the jump the distanced reached was measured from the line to the heel of the nearest foot. Hand grip dynamometry was performed once on each hand. The cadet held the dynamometer out to his or her side and squeezed it as they lowered it to their hip. The results were that there were no significant differences between groups for the 5-10-5 shuttle run (p = 0.91), standing broad jump (p = 0.49), or grip strength (p = 0.31). RC did not outperform
Adolescent bullying and sleep difficulties
This study evaluated whether adolescents who report having been bullied, being bullies, or report both being a bully and being bullied experience more sleep difficulties than children uninvolved in bullying. The study drew upon cognitive theories of insomnia, investigating whether the extent to which young people report worrying about bullying can moderate associations between victimization and sleep difficulties. Participants were 5420 adolescents who completed a self-report questionnaire. Pure Victims (OR = 1.72: 95% CI [1.07 – 2.75]), Pure Bullies (OR = 1.80: 95% CI [1.16 – 2.81]), and Bully-Victims (OR = 2.90: 95% CI [1.17 – 4.92]) were all more likely to experience sleep difficulties when compared to uninvolved young people. The extent to which young people reported worrying about being bullied did not moderate the links between victimization and sleep difficulties. In this way, bullying is clearly related to sleep difficulties among adolescents but the conceptual reach of the cognitive model of insomnia in this domain is questioned

Radio Observations of the Hubble Deep Field South region: I. Survey Description and Initial Results
This paper is the first of a series describing the results of the Australia
Telescope Hubble Deep Field South (ATHDFS) radio survey. The survey was
conducted at four wavelengths - 20, 11, 6, and 3 cm, over a 4-year period, and
achieves an rms sensitivity of about 10 microJy at each wavelength. We describe
the observations and data reduction processes, and present data on radio
sources close to the centre of the HDF-S. We discuss in detail the properties
of a subset of these sources. The sources include both starburst galaxies and
galaxies powered by an active galactic nucleus, and range in redshift from 0.1
to 2.2. Some of them are characterised by unusually high radio-to-optical

The Samurai Project: verifying the consistency of black-hole-binary waveforms for gravitational-wave detection
We quantify the consistency of numerical-relativity black-hole-binary
waveforms for use in gravitational-wave (GW) searches with current and planned
ground-based detectors. We compare previously published results for the
mode of the gravitational waves from an equal-mass
nonspinning binary, calculated by five numerical codes. We focus on the 1000M
(about six orbits, or 12 GW cycles) before the peak of the GW amplitude and the
subsequent ringdown. We find that the phase and amplitude agree within each
code's uncertainty estimates. The mismatch between the modes
is better than for binary masses above with respect to
the Enhanced LIGO detector noise curve, and for masses above
with respect to Advanced LIGO, Virgo and Advanced Virgo. Between the waveforms
with the best agreement, the mismatch is below . We find that
the waveforms would be indistinguishable in all ground-based detectors (and for
the masses we consider) if detected with a signal-to-noise ratio of less than

Spectroscopic Target Selection in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey: The Quasar Sample
We describe the algorithm for selecting quasar candidates for optical
spectroscopy in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Quasar candidates are selected
via their non-stellar colors in "ugriz" broad-band photometry, and by matching
unresolved sources to the FIRST radio catalogs. The automated algorithm is
sensitive to quasars at all redshifts lower than z=5.8. Extended sources are
also targeted as low-redshift quasar candidates in order to investigate the
evolution of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) at the faint end of the luminosity
function. Nearly 95% of previously known quasars are recovered (based on 1540
quasars in 446 square degrees). The overall completeness, estimated from
simulated quasars, is expected to be over 90%, whereas the overall efficiency
(quasars:quasar candidates) is better than 65%. The selection algorithm targets
ultraviolet excess quasars to i^*=19.1 and higher-redshift (z>3) quasars to
i^*=20.2, yielding approximately 18 candidates per square degree. In addition
to selecting ``normal'' quasars, the design of the algorithm makes it sensitive
to atypical AGN such as Broad Absorption Line quasars and heavily reddened

The fatty acid compositions of erythrocyte and plasma polar lipids in children with autism, developmental delay or typically developing controls and the effect of fish oil intake
The erythrocyte and plasma fatty acid compositions of children with autism were compared in a case-control study with typically developing (TD) children and with children showing developmental delay (DD). Forty-five autism subjects were age-matched with TD controls and thirty-eight with DD controls. Fatty acid data were compared using paired t tests. In addition, blood fatty acids from treatment-naive autism subjects were compared with autism subjects who had consumed fish oil supplements by two-sample t tests. Relatively few differences were seen between erythrocyte fatty acids in autism and TD subjects although the former had an increased arachidonic acid (ARA):EPA ratio. This ratio was also increased in plasma samples from the same children. No changes in n-3 fatty acids or ARA:EPA ratio were seen when comparing autism with DD subjects but some SFA and MUFA were decreased in the DD subjects, most notably 24 : 0 and 24 : 1, which are essential components of axonal myelin sheaths. However, if multiple comparisons are taken into account, and a stricter level of significance applied, most of these values would not be significant. Autism subjects consuming fish oil showed reduced erythrocyte ARA, 22 : 4n-6, 22 : 5n-6 and total n-6 fatty acids and increased EPA, 22 : 5n-3, 22 : 6n-3 and total n-3 fatty acids along with reduced n-6:n-3 and ARA:EPA ratios. Collectively, the autism subjects did not have an underlying phospholipid disorder, based on erythrocyte fatty acid compositions, although the increased ARA:EPA ratio observed suggested that an imbalance of essential highly unsaturated fatty acids may be present in a cohort of autism subjects
Observations and Theoretical Implications of the Large Separation Lensed Quasar SDSS J1004+4112
We study the recently discovered gravitational lens SDSS J1004+4112, the
first quasar lensed by a cluster of galaxies. It consists of four images with a
maximum separation of 14.62''. The system has been confirmed as a lensed quasar
at z=1.734 on the basis of deep imaging and spectroscopic follow-up
observations. We present color-magnitude relations for galaxies near the lens
plus spectroscopy of three central cluster members, which unambiguously confirm
that a cluster at z=0.68 is responsible for the large image separation. We find
a wide range of lens models consistent with the data, but they suggest four
general conclusions: (1) the brightest cluster galaxy and the center of the
cluster potential well appear to be offset by several kpc; (2) the cluster mass
distribution must be elongated in the North--South direction, which is
consistent with the observed distribution of cluster galaxies; (3) the
inference of a large tidal shear (~0.2) suggests significant substructure in
the cluster; and (4) enormous uncertainty in the predicted time delays between
the images means that measuring the delays would greatly improve constraints on
the models. We also compute the probability of such large separation lensing in
the SDSS quasar sample, on the basis of the CDM model. The lack of large
separation lenses in previous surveys and the discovery of one in SDSS together
imply a mass fluctuation normalization \sigma_8=1.0^{+0.4}_{-0.2} (95% CL), if
cluster dark matter halos have an inner slope -1.5. Shallower profiles would
require higher values of \sigma_8. Although the statistical conclusion might be
somewhat dependent on the degree of the complexity of the lens potential, the
discovery is consistent with the predictions of the abundance of cluster-scale

Chandra Detection of a TypeII Quasar at z=3.288
We report on observations of a TypeII quasar at redshift z=3.288, identified
as a hard X-ray source in a 185 ks observation with the Chandra X-ray
Observatory and as a high-redshift photometric candidate from deep, multiband
optical imaging. CXOJ084837.9+445352 (hereinafter CXO52) shows an unusually
hard X-ray spectrum from which we infer an absorbing column density N(H) =
(4.8+/-2.1)e23 / cm2 (90% confidence) and an implied unabsorbed 2-10 keV
rest-frame luminosity of L(2-10) = 3.3e44 ergs/s, well within the quasar
regime. Hubble Space Telescope imaging shows CXO52 to be elongated with slight
morphological differences between the WFPC2 F814W and NICMOS F160W bands.
Optical and near-infrared spectroscopy of CXO52 show high-ionization emission
lines with velocity widths ~1000 km/s and flux ratios similar to a Seyfert2
galaxy or radio galaxy. The latter are the only class of high-redshift TypeII
luminous AGN which have been extensively studied to date. Unlike radio
galaxies, however, CXO52 is radio quiet, remaining undetected at radio
wavelengths to fairly deep limits, f(4.8GHz) < 40 microJy. High-redshift TypeII
quasars, expected from unification models of active galaxies and long-thought
necessary to explain the X-ray background, are poorly constrained
observationally with few such systems known. We discuss recent observations of
similar TypeII quasars and detail search techniques for such systems: namely
(1) X-ray selection, (2) radio selection, (3) multi-color imaging selection,
and (4) narrow-band imaging selection. Such studies are likely to begin
identifying luminous, high-redshift TypeII systems in large numbers. We discuss
the prospects for these studies and their implications to our understanding of
